Well, not literally!

I finally got around to hoking up a bit of a web display of some of my collectible junque. I'm always interested in seeing other collectors' stuff so I figured I'd share some of mine. As a website or online museum it's not much, but I hope you enjoy it.

I've repaired many of the things you've shown--including the Webster wire recorders. Oh God!-- did those things sound terrible--but at the same time totally charming in another way....!

I was actually surprised at how good some of those recordings can sound. Especially considering that they're recorded on steel with no bias. It ain't HiFi, but it can be fairly enjoyable to listen to. My favorite thing is listening to unidentified recordings which probably haven't been played in over half a century and trying to imagine what was going on. It's like a time machine. "Normal" people are always as amazed when I fire one of those up as when I run a sixty year old TV for them!

I worked on one of those wire recorders for a musician who wanted to run his electric guitar through it as an effect. He submitted it to me with a bunch of spools with interesting stuff on them--old standards, etc. Most singular was a spool that had a recording of The Cyclotronist's Nightmare.... lyrics here... http://www.haverford.edu/physics-ast...erts/cyclo.htm What a treat!

Dave, enjoyed the collection very much. I am very impressed with the wire recording. What does it say on the back of the (Lambda?) lab power supply? You have an arrow pointing to it, but is is illegible.

John, That's the one I showed at dinnertime at the Early Television Convention last year. It was Ray Kell's.
