DVD Player won't play, any ideas?
I have a Toshiba DVD/VCR combo model SD-V290 and when I put a DVD in, it either ejects it or when it tries to load, it tries to for a few seconds and then shuts off completely. Has anyone else ever experienced this? Any ideas why it does that?

Try posting in a different forum, this one doesn't quite match what you are talking about...

From what I hear from my friends in the business, either the spindle motor fails (turns too slow) or the laser pick-up dies. It could also be bad electrolytics in the power supply. You might try cleaning the pick-up lense before you try anything else. Then try the caps. If that does not do it, it's probably not worth messing with for economic reasons. I think those Toshiba DVD/VCR combos are made by Orion and they were not meant to be serviced. I've repaired a few power supplies in DVD players; but, that's about all the luck I've had.

I ran into a puzzling problem with my 3-year-old CyberHome DVD player about a month ago. Put a DVD in, close the tray, press the play button...and the player would show "Loading" at the upper left corner of the screen for a minute or so, being replaced by the message "Bad disc". (This would show with every DVD I tried, and I know all of mine are good.) At first, if I fiddled around enough with the player, I could eventually get the thing to work, but the problem became progressively worse until the day came when the "Bad disc" message appeared every time, on every disc I own. Finally gave up and bought a new Memorex full-size DVD player a couple of days later, which works great. Will trash the old one. Maybe it was just as well that my CyberHome player bit the dust, as the company itself is now and has been out of business for some time; the chances are I couldn't get the thing repaired anymore if I wanted to (unobtainium parts and other problems), and even if I could, the repairs would cost more than the player sold for ($24.99, IIRC) when it was new.
For NowhereMan1966: I'm sorry to have read about another of your cats passing away. I had to have my 6-year-old white cat Jonah put down about three weeks ago; it was one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make in my life (as was the decision to have my first white cat, Shawn, put down in 2004), but it was the best thing I could have done for him, as he was very ill and had lost a lot of weight by the time I got him in to the vet, now about three weeks ago. Shawn (1996-2002) and Jonah (2004-2008) - I miss you, guys! I would post a pic of both "my boys", but they looked exactly alike so there wouldn't be much point in it. They were both pure white cats and, for all I know, could have been twins.

White Cats
Did someone say white cats?
My two were both homeless & adopted. This year will be 10 years since they moved in with me. EVERYBODY should have a white cat, or two. |

Is the original 16v/1000mfd cap in these players inferior quality to begin with, or just underrated? Have there been any other problems and/or failures reported with this particular unit? Thanks in advance.

My condolences for your loss. Only 6 years old too, back in 2006, I have one pass away from kidney failure at barely 5 years old, he was a grey and white Tuxedo cat, named Greystone. Pixie, she kept losing weight, she was diagnosed with a high thyroid and anemia from fleas. Fleas have been horrible with year. I think we could have pulled her through if it was just that, but she had trouble breathing, from the anemia but the vet suspected something else too so there was more to it than met the eye. Pixie was a 16 year old black cat. I lost 5 cats in three years, I'm down to four now. I'd have three but we took a kitten in last year. I'm like a pied piper when it comes to cats, just like Pope Benedict XVI, like him, cats follow me around. In 2001, I took in a mother cat and three kittens, Greystone who passed on was one of the kittens. His brother, G.W. ("Dubya") and sister Whitey are still here along with their mother, Spunky along with Rascal whom we took in last year. Rascal fits in with the family well, sometimes I wonder if he is Greystone who came back for a second round.

My aunt had a white cat, Snowball. She had a blue and green eye and was deaf. Very loving and pretty girl though. She also had a black cat at the same time, Muffin, a Burmese cat. When my aunt died, we took in Muffin, Snowball passed away a few years before, and she lived with us until she passed away in 2004. People thought Muffin was mean, but she didn't like men except for me and high school buddy. My cousin in a drug rage, kicked Muffin, and I think this is why she was that way. She was a success story for us, we kept her alive with kidney failure for 2 and a half years.
