I don't know how you can top the original Gort, but I'd like to see it!

I had to reply to this. I saw the trailer for the remake of this superb film and I was thrilled that they were remaking it. I hope they do it justice. The original film is one of MY FAVORITE movies of all time. This was THE film that got me started watching classic movies.

One of my prized possessions, which I feel is still better than the DVD in terms of included extras is the Boxed Autographed Laserdisc Edition which includes a neat insert, huge book entitled "Robert Wise on his films: From Editing room to Director's chair" about his career and a 24K gold CD of the film's score. Some pics:

The trailer is much to "slick" for me. It kind of reminded me why I don't watch movies. I think I stopped after seeing Star Wars in the 70's.

Think I'll stay home and listen to some twangy music instead.

Actually, I think Jim Carry would be good in this part. Think about 'The Truman Show' or 'The Majestic' and you will see that he could play that part well.

Reeves is just a one-sided actor - always angry. He should just go away.

Not looking forward to this one at all!!!

even though it has jennifer connally in it, and that goes a long way in my book, i can already tell that this will be one for me to ignore. as soon as i saw the digital fx, along with the fact of keanu reeves (how does he keep getting acting jobs?), i know i can leave this alone

Remaking this movie would be a sin. Can't Hollywood come up with anything original anymore. By the way I think the original film is great.

Hollywood has a hard time with anything original. It's really either a re-hash of another movie, adaptations of literary works, sequels of other movies that were originally rehashed ideas of literary works, or a Pauly Shore film.

With that said, I'm still wanting to see the movie just to see it. I know it will never touch the legacy of the original, but I'd like to see how the script came out and what went into making it.

Literary works?? LITERARY works????

All I ever see are film versions of either comic books, "graphic novels" (one very small step above a comic book), or video games.
If only Hollywood would adapt a real book to film...
I can think of several real, live BOOKS with more than 16 pages which would make fine movies - with the right screenwriter and director at the helm:

ARTHUR C. CLARKE
Rendezvous With Rama
Childhood's End
The City And The Stars

ALAN DEAN FOSTER
Spellsinger
To The Vanishing Point
Bloodhype

(Short stories I think would convert well into films)
THEODORE STURGEON - Microcosmic God
ROBERT HEINLEIN - The Roads Must Roll
A.E. VAN VOGT - The Weapon Shop
RAY BRADBURY - Mars Is Heaven!
LESTER DEL REY - Helen O'Loy
JAMES BLISH - Surface Tension
TOM GODWIN - The Cold Equations

IMO, many of these books/stories are so visually powerful they might best be tackled in the "Shreck/Beowolf" super-realistic CGI method - so long as the story isn't sacrificed in the name of sheer spectacle.

A better version of The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursala K. Le Guin.

What I meant to say in my post was "literary works". (i.e. scarcasm intended) I've read one or two of the short stories you listed and I think they would be great films, however I highly doubt Hollywood would go for that kind of stuff. Comic adaptations are the trend de jour within the past 5-8 years. That, and best seller books like the Da Vinci Code. Hardly "literary masterpieces" in the classical sense. I don't see the trend changing anytime soon, though it would be nice.

I'll stick to reading a good book and having the "movie" play out in my head or watching some of my bronze/silver age movies on LD
