Even for my computer...I use a CRT...

I have two CRT TVs, a 19" RCA CTC185 (eight years old) and a 19" Zenith Sentry 2 (almost 12 years), which still work as well as when they were new. The RCA has only had one repair in all that time and the Zenith, none. I have no intention of giving them up as long as they work as well as they do. I also have an HP-branded CRT monitor on my computer.

I agree with the person who said, in another post, that CRT televisions make better pictures than FPs. I've never seen a flat-panel set up close, but from what I've read in this forum, FPs have a long way to go before they even come close to the picture quality of a good CRT set. Plus, CRTs last much longer than FPs (10-15+ years vs. two years or less, respectively). That's a shame, considering the prices of flat-panel HD televisions; if you go out and buy one for $1,000 or more, it probably will last until the warranty expires, then either the panel itself will go bad or one or more of the video driver ICs, which are molded into the cable connecting the panel to the chassis, go bad. The only recourse when either happens is to trash the set and get a new one.

At $900-1,000+ a throw I would think flat-panel HDTV manufacturers would build their sets to last longer than the warranty period or two years, whichever is longer(!). The Korean off-brands are probably the worst in this regard. Personally, I'm waiting for three things to happen before I even consider getting a flat-panel television: one, the prices come down considerably (I could get one tomorrow, however, if I wanted a picture not much bigger than a postage stamp, but if I eventually get a FP I want one at least as large as my CRTs), two, the sets' picture quality improves so as to approach the quality of a good CRT, and three, the sets are built so they are a heck of a lot more reliable than today's models that wind up on eBay or Craigslist as parts sets, etc. after two years or less. Until that day comes, I am staying with my CRTs as long as they work. No sense in trashing two perfectly good sets just because (as it has been said) HDTV is the best thing to happen to TV since color or stereo sound.
