'66 Admiral portable
This is a nice set... 19inch B&W entirely tubed. Got it from a fellow Ak'er. I plan on using this as one of my summertime portables.

Yeah I meant to write more but to be honest I forgot I posted this thread....
Grimer, thanks again for the set...I just finished metalbones restokit on the Fisher tonight and it sounds great. About the TV, I plan on making the best of using my portables this summer... without a converter box dragging us down! I've been using it on and off in the bedroom and I'm really starting to like black and white again. One cool thing about this set is that the exact date of build is printed on the chassis...November 23rd 1966. So it's almost 42 y/o and most of the tubes are original (I assume) Admiral's!

Anyone got any pics? That's kinda a trip down memory lane for me. My folks retired a battered old second-hand Zenith they had and picked up a brand new Admiral portable back in the early '60s. I remember watching the Lloyd Thaxton show on the thing.

I figured I'd post some pics of the Admiral in action.
One strange problem it has is that there is a slow rolling disfiguration where vertical lines are bent, and it crawls up the screen. It is not visible 99 percent of the time. Still extremely watchable and in great condition. Admiral was in Chicago near Zenith, right? Last edited by zenith2134; 03-25-2009 at 04:18 PM.

Yeah, probably. Its so subtle that it really doesn't interfere with the picture too much. I realize its a good idea to change the power supply caps on a set this old. I'm going to try and find some multisection cans

Well I had the set open today and it seems like I should be focusing on the Admiral-branded radial caps since one has a cracked case. This is likely the cause of my fluctuation issue.
I wish I had a brick and mortar electronics house nearby, unfortunately I'll have to order the caps online. The values in question are .1 uf at 1000v, .1 uf @ 600v and 330uf at 1000v. I also touched up some soldering under the HV cage and on the tuner and the set looks even sharper and brighter now.

Update on the Admiral: The HV cup arced to chassis like crazy and the set went dead. Opened her up last night and cleaned around the cup which had a lot of dust buildup and found a bad fuse near the HV rectifier cage. That got her back up and runnin'.....Today i'm gonna tear into the underside of the chassis and change what i can
At this point, I'm trying to get all of my tube sets running perfectly since they are nice companions in the winter months.
