Slightly OT: Mitsu HS-U77 timing
 

I know this isn't quite the right place, but it's the closest we have :) While doing a belt replacement on a Mitsubishi HS-U77 SVHS VCR, the timing on the gears slipped somehow. Anyone have some good directions for getting the gears all back in sync? I've tried and tried and tried and used what I thought were the sync marks on the gears, but no dice any way shape form or fashion. Help!

Is it a HS-U70 or HS-U71? There's no such thing as a HS-U77.

Or newer units HS-U770 or HS-U775?

While we're waiting for the answer, some of the worst mechanical problems that Mits VCR's used to have were in the mid '80's. Which, if I'm not mistaken, was Mitzy's first consumer VHS VCR. I don't remember the Mits model numbers involved but the same mechanism was utilized in units branded for Emerson (Emerson model VCR900 as an example) and HH Scott, amung others. The grease would dry up big time- some parts would move where others wouldn't; cam tracks and gear teeth would strip- loud ratching noise would occur during mode changes... In most cases it was best to replace ALL gears in the path. The alignment on those was a BEAR! You had to use a continuity check with a DMM on the mode switch as you were doing it.

ha1156w refers to an SVHS machine so I'm SURE it's not THIS same mechanism. I was just going down the Mitsu Memory Lane...

Mitsubishi's first consumer VHS VCR was in 1979, which is the HS-300UR. The chassis you described is also found in the HS-400UR, which was their first Hi-Fi stereo unit. The worst Mitsubishi VCRs ever made in history were the ones made in early 80s, like HS-303UR and HS-304UR, for example.

Well, I guess I WAS mistaken, then. I didn't realize Mits VCR's went back that far. Should have kept my mouth shut. Did those 400's have problems with conductive glue on the circuit boards?

I can't help on that 770- I saw a very few 770's and 775's in the early 2000's but none for the reason you describe. Good luck with it.
