Dud 23VCHP22. Rebuild or toss?
 

I just junked an early '70's Curtis Mathes solid state TV/stereo combo. The only reason I brought it home was for the tube; but, it turns out to be bad (thanks to instant on, I'm sure). I rejuved it and got the red and blue up good; but, the green didn't do as well. It is a 23VCHP22 with an EIA code of 337 (Westinghouse) and it's a non-bonded type. Would it be worth rebuilding this for a spare or would I be better off just to toss it?

You know, for those CM sets to cost so much in the '70's; they sure were cheap made. This cabinet is all particle board and plastic. The TV chassis was an NEC and I don't know who made the stereo chassis. It looks like they just shoved the cheapest thing they could find in there. IMHO, the '70's Zenith's and RCA's were much better made.

I guess your answer would be based on how hard it would be to rebuild the tube, and how badly you need that type of tube.

Right now I don't need it that bad but it seems that 23" delta color tubes are a little hard to find (around here).

I'd keep it until you need the space, then toss it if you have to.

That's what I think I'll do. I may run up on a TV with a busted tube and at least this one can be rebuilt and used if needed. Of course, if anyone here needs this tube, just let me know. It will be free.

I think it will be quite awhile before we run out of good 23v tubes. There are still some NOS turning up. That being said, I always hesitate to toss a dud. As long as there is room in the attic I hold onto it-you can always toss it later.
