Nobody has mentioned "Soylent Green"?

I also tried to stay away from the cheap-horro-flick side of SciFi like Phantasm et al.

Sandy G 12-08-2006 02:29 PM

Soylent Green Is People !!!!!

Scorpion8 12-08-2006 02:31 PM

It's the future, baby. Just accept.

Hey, how about the Planet of the Apes (original series, not the poor recent remake)?

Scorpion8 12-08-2006 02:39 PM

Gotta add one more: Logan's Run. Absolute classic, about as cheesy as they come (watching it now compared to recent productions).

Okay, I can't do it. Can't stop at 5. Gotta have more. SciFi is my thing and I just want more, more, more......

soundmotor 12-08-2006 04:38 PM

OK, Scorpion8 gets a dispensation to add more as does JackG.

Island of Terror was an especially good pick.

Island of Terror Trailer

1) Plan 9 From Outer Space
2) Mars Needs Women
3) The Green Slime ("Well I'll be go to hell!")

[horshack]oo...oo...[/horshack] How about The Keep?

Sandy G 12-09-2006 06:32 AM

Anybody remember that British flick from 30 years or so ago, "Zardoz" ? Don't remember much about it, except you got to see Charlotte Rampling-a minor would-be hottie of the day-nekkid,& people ran around in it wearing these stupid stone-like masks that vaguely resembled Charlton Heston's Moses in the "10 Commandments"...

fotno 12-09-2006 07:01 AM

Hey Sandy, wasn't Sean Connery in that one?

My list...

Fantastic Voyage
The Day The Earth Stood Still
Them! (Love it)
Attack of The 50 Foot Woman
This Island Earth

To be honest, I can only think of a handful of Sci-Fi flicks that qualify (to me at least) as A-list films. IMO, everything else in the genre is by defintion a B-movie... I think that's why I love Sci-Fi so! Less pretention.

Zardoz = Wizard of Oz, the book that the immortal drops in front of Sean Connery to get him thinking. I like that movie a lot & had forgotten about it.

Sandy G 12-09-2006 10:02 AM

Yep, Sean was in that one. I don't remember if he got nekkid innit too, though... It's been a good 25 yrs since I saw it...Don't think they've ever played it on TV...Maybe too much nekkidity in it or something...

One of VERY few movies I actually own...

"I am Arthur Frayn, and I am Zardoz. I have lived 300 years, and long to die."

Directed by a favorite of mine, John Boorman.

Sandy G 12-09-2006 10:39 AM

I'm remembering more 'n' more about "Zardoz" now...Maybe I'll hafta try to find it & rent it, & watch it again...Seems like it had a veddy, veddy quirky "Britishness" about it...most Americans didn't "get" it.

subdermis2000 12-09-2006 11:54 AM

In no particular order:

Death Race 2000
Dark Star
Barbarella
Logan's Run
The Blood of Heroes

Scorpion8 12-09-2006 11:58 AM

I was wondering if anyone was going to select "Barbarella", a cult-favorite before Hanoi-Jane injected politics into every facet of her public life. How about "Galaxina" (Playmate Dorothy Stratten), another of the almost-chessiest-film-ever-produced? Avery Schriber as a starship captain?

It is damned quirky alright, but not all that "British", IMO. As with most Boorman films, the visuals are unique.

I've never seen it. I'll have to find a DVD and watch it. I am intrigued now.

and the story has become more relevant to the here and now than it was in the 80's and 90's. In respect for the forum rules I'll leave it at that.

dtuomi 12-10-2006 01:38 PM

I was always fond of Silent Running. Although Dr. Who and the Daleks with Peter Cushing was fun. Also Battle Beyond the Stars which was a remake of the Magnificent Seven (which was a remake). Also Runaway with Tom Selleck, I thought the smart bullets in that were scary. And who could ever forget Looker which was very forward looking in its ideas of how virtual actors would be used.

David

sven 12-10-2006 02:45 PM

No order, just faves:

1. Escape From New York
2. Screamers
3. Killer Klowns from Outer Space
4. The Idaho Transfer
5. Kronos

soundmotor 12-10-2006 03:50 PM

I will have to watch "Idaho Transfer" and "Blood of Heroes". I'd never heard of them before.

A few more -
  1. Cube
  2. The Monitors
  3. H-Man (1959)
  4. Giant of Metropolis
  5. Forbidden Planet

Silent Running has always been a favorite.

I am not a Dern fan per se but no one else could have played a misanthrope better that he did in that role.

I am somewhat shocked that Westworld has not reared it's head yet.

Dusty Chalk 12-11-2006 04:20 AM

Oh, yeah, definitely have to add Westworld and Silent Running to my list.

That's 4, I owe you one more.

pmsummer 12-11-2006 05:50 AM

I'm seeing some "Major Studio Releases" being listed as "B-movies". Here's a primer on what a "B-movie" is/was.

Based upon this primer, I need to amend my previous list.

New list:
Godzilla (w/Raymond Burr over-dubs)*
Them
Day of the Triffids
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Invaders from Mars

*may not qualify as a "B" movie... perhaps a "Z".

Yeah, well in my defense, Cherry 2000 and Johnny Mnemonic were on the original list, and for me, the leap from Cherry 2000 to Mad Max or Escape from New York isn't a large one.

That said, I agree they ain't exactly b movies, so my list becomes:

I was a Zombie for the FBI
The Keep (this is probably the most questionable off of my list)
Re-Animator
Repo Man
Return of the Living Dead

Jack G 12-11-2006 08:13 AM

OK, if you are going to put qualifiers on it...

The Giant Gilla Monster
Wasp Woman
Attack of the Giant Leaches
The Screaming Skull
Attack of the Colossal Man and War of the Collossal Beast
Beast of Yucca Flats
Teenagers from Outer Space

Holst 12-11-2006 11:11 AM

Slaughterhouse Five (better book than movie though)
Andromida Strain (better book than movie though)
the original War of the Worlds (better book than movie though)
When Worlds Colide.
the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers
It came from Outer Space.

Plus a big agreement on Colosus, Runnig Silent, This Island earth.

Sandy G 12-11-2006 11:32 AM

Anybody ever see "The Leech Woman" from circa 1960? Hell, it was a grade-Z flick, but I remember it being scary as all get-out...

subdermis2000 12-11-2006 03:10 PM

With the qualifiers, my amended list is:

Death Race 2000
Dark Star
The Blood of Heroes (some may argue this is a "major release")

and two new ones:

Surf Nazis Must Die
Overdrawn at the Memory Bank

kcollins4 12-11-2006 03:28 PM

Here's some for considration. Donnie Darko, Pi, The Faculty

soundmotor 12-11-2006 04:56 PM

I wonder if anyone recalls this abbreviated description (from what I can remember)? It was a late 50's, early 60's B&W, set in a swampy area like Louisiana. A couple scientists were working on some sort of teletransporter technology and are able to swap items with unknown individuals on the other end. Small items such as medals, figurines, maybe a book, etc. Some of the items are radioactive too. Eventually they figure out that they are in touch with a future "Earth" and those on the other side are plotting to come to an "Earth" that has not been laid open by nuclear war and chemical devastation. At one point one of the future people, a hideously deformed woman gets transported back to the "present" and the scientists end up hunting her down in the swamp before she can set open the portal for mass ingress from the decayed future.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? I don't remember much as I was pretty young, 8 or so when I saw it, and I did not get to finish it. About the time the guys went into the swamp with guns they showed the woman and my mom said "That's it!" and off to bed I went. Same thing happened on "Mysterious Island" when the giant crab came out of the ground and "The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T". I don't think I even got past the opening credits on that one. Probably what fuels my interest in sci-fi as so much of it I was not allowed to watch.

riffer 12-11-2006 06:40 PM

I don't know about 5, but my first thought was She with Sandahl Bergman:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000922/

Absolutely hillarious a few beer down.

She was also in another great B sci-fi move - Hell Comes to Frogtown with "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, not to mention the high budget Conan the Barberian and Red Sonja.
