Best "Music" movies ever made?

Choose but choose wisely.

I only really got 2

1) The Commitments - Irish people are just naturally funny and drunk Irish muscians are even better. Best soundtrack also out of any music movie catagory too imho.

2)High Fidelity - Its just sorta a rehash of Say Anything really but the taking place in a record store applies to most of us I think. Also Dick hitting Tim Robbins with the phone makes me choke.

Walk the Line isnt on here cause I think they spent too muc time on his addictions. Flamers need not apply.

Havent seen Dewey Cox yet either but from all the trailors on youtube I seen this has promise.

Cast your ballot in an election that you really matter in this year. VOTE!

The Kids are Alright
It's a movie, and it's full of music and about musicians, so it should count.

Andyman 02-11-2008 02:51 PM

Tossing out the rockumentaries like "The Last Waltz", "Woodstock, "Monterey Pop", etc, I guess my favorite would have to be "The Blues Brothers"

Hands down :thmbsp:

Mark W. 02-11-2008 02:54 PM

Spinal Tap

Cause deep down we all want it to go to 11

Snade 02-11-2008 03:05 PM

The movie "Almost Famous" (2000) has an excellent soundtrack and is a great movie about 70's rock bands. The new music by Stillwater is also good.

Cheers, Snade

The Commitments for sure!

Hadn't seen it years, but I'd love to get a copy of Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains on DVD, if they'd ever release one. I saw it years ago in USA Network, and I think VH-1 has aired it more recently. Starred Diane Lane and Laura Dern as members of a teenage girl punk band, and also featured members of The Clash and The Tubes. Jonathan Demme was a co-writer too.

1962's "The Music Man" is kinda corny, but if you kinda just sit back & enjoy it for what it is, then its jolly good fun. Always liked Robert Preston. And you get to see about every late-50s early '60s character actor there was in it...All those faces you grew up with.

And you get to hear Hermione Gingold say, "It's a smuttybook!"

What he said. Why am I not surprised we'd agree?

There have been other fine movies mentioned ("Commitments").

I just have to add another: "A Hard Days Night".

I'm with you one this one. Filmed concerts & rockumentary productions aside, it's difficult to imagine an original film score that's better than what's presented in A Hard Day's Night. Except maybe the soundtrack to Bill Asher's magnum opus How To Stuff A Wild Bikini (1965).

similost 02-15-2008 03:35 PM

WOAH.. I can't believe I get to name some of the best 3 of all time that haven't been mentioned...

The Song Ramains the Same
Sgt. Peppers
Purple Rain

I won't even mention Yellow Submarine was also forgotten..

Those are probably my 3 all time favorites (short of the one I didn't mention :D)

similost 02-15-2008 03:36 PM

OH...

and not a single mention of Tommy? THE ULTIMATE rock opera... slackin people.. slackin...

A rock and roll fable..

Rick Moranis was pretty obnoxious in that too

How about Eddie and The Cruisers? That should pretty much sum up
Michael Pare's career

MrZero63 02-15-2008 10:37 PM

Nobody said "Heavy Metal" yet?!! :scratch2:

m4rz 02-15-2008 11:09 PM

Ok,
For me:
Blade Runner - great soundtrack for the time
Breakfast Club - has anybody guessed my age yet?
School of Rock - c'mon has pretty much every rock song you can think of...well almost

(and just some others)
Saturday Night Fever
Fantasia

Cheers

clydeselsor 02-15-2008 11:12 PM

The Glenn Miller Story
The Benny Goodman Story
The Gene Krupa Story

pmsummer 02-16-2008 07:19 AM

Doh! How could I forget the film that changed the way I listened to music forever, where long sections of music replaced the need for emotive acting, that gave me an appreciation for Strauss waltzes that took me beyond the Vienna stereotype, and that opened my ears to a monumentally great composer I'd might never have heard of again?

Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. The best pure "music" movie ever made.

MarantzDance 02-20-2008 03:18 PM

Just saw "Ray" ( I know I am really dragging on newer movies lately) and I gotta say Jamie Foxx was incredible. Dman thing almost had m in tears at one point. Ray isnt the best but its really really good.
