In Denver: http://denver.craigslist.org/clt/513316095.html Somebody should give this set a home. Sparton IMHO made some of the best sets of the late 40's to early 50's. I have a very similar set as this only a bit older. As a teen in the early 80's I used to go to the flea market every weekend and I would always see an older man (older to me at the time, probably 50) sitting at his table viewing what is now my TV. To people then such sets were steadily becoming junk since color sets had been easily avilable for 15 or more years. I remember always thinking back then and before that the older 50's sets that many people still had in their home were interesting. In a lot of cases the older sets had a color table model sitting on top. At any rate the man reluctantly sold me the set for maybe $15 or so. That was about the going rate at the time. The set performs well to this day with one of the sharpest pictures and stronget reception of anything I own. There is not much of a need for an external antenna. Although it has never needed work I did take it apart once for a good dusting and discovered the extreemly well built chassis with dual rectifier tubes. To me that is at least one sign of a good set. Another top dog is Dumont which did the dual rectifiers a lot. Sorry for the winded story but I don't see a lot of these and wanted to hopefully lead someone to save a possibly great set.:thmbsp: Captain Video 01-03-2008, 09:05 PM http://cgi.ebay.com/RCA-630-TS-complete-tabletop-television-1946-10-screen_W0QQitemZ260198997952QQihZ016QQcategoryZ363 8QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Eric H 01-04-2008, 11:52 PM http://cgi.ebay.com/1950-HOFFMAN-TELEVISION-WITH-HISTORY-LOT-G1084_W0QQitemZ320203809990QQihZ011QQcategoryZ7337 4QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Dave A 01-08-2008, 10:42 PM The listing would not load photos for me. Don hposter 02-19-2008, 07:38 AM Don, This set looks like it takes standard RCA knobs (like many of the FADA sets did). You could buy a set of knobs online, or get a set from a 1940's RCA or RCA clone, that someone has kicking around for parts. Harry refill233 02-19-2008, 08:02 AM I'll see about finding a set . So was this set a copy of the RCA ? Just trying to get alittle history of the set. Also was wondering what size and number the picture tube is? Thanks Harry, Don John Folsom 02-19-2008, 11:47 AM Don, it is a RCA 630 clone. Either licensed from RCA, or quite likely RCA built the whole thing for FADA. That was very common in those days. The knobs are, as Harry said, the standare RCA types, which I could supply. Except for the channel knob, which is the RCA style, but in brass. I have attached a better photo of the knob on my set. You could put a standare RCA 630 style channel knobs on it, and it would look perfectly correct. I do enjoy the unusual antenna shown atop my FADA. I have seen several of them go by on ebay. Hope you get the set Don. Let me know if I can help with the knobs. refill233 02-19-2008, 02:45 PM Thank you for the added info on the knobs. Its great that you have some of them if i get the set. Captain Video 04-15-2008, 08:46 PM Yes, it's very strange. The guys here in this forum who are from Europe and Australia can say if in those parts of the world this sad thing is also happening? matt_s78mn 04-15-2008, 10:30 PM Guess this makes me appreciate my relatives who do the genealogy research when they argue with one another over who gets what photos. And looks like it is a world trend It does seem strange, now that I think of it. :scratch2: But a reason may be that these essentially random pictures show the fashions of clothes, furnature and of course TV sets over the years. Captain Video 04-15-2008, 11:16 PM I don't know why anyone would want to dispose of their family history in such a way. There's also something even crazier than that happening here. There are people from humble backgrounds, who became rich, and now... well, let's say that they are ashamed of having poor ancestors, so... they want to have a more "presentable" ancestry to show in the high-society, so, what they do? They are BUYING old photos of families from the rural aristocracy of the "coffee barons" that ruled Brazil between 1850 and 1929 ( Brazil was the largest producer of coffee in the world during that period, and, until 1889, the country was ruled by Emperors, so many of these "coffee barons" actually were granted with titles of nobility; when the Great Depression came, the coffee economy ended abruptly, and most, if not the majority of these so-called "nobles" went bankrupt... today their grandchildren use the subway to go to work ) and are presenting those photos pretending that they are pictures from their REAL families!!! Now, THAT is sick!!! Now, I think one must have the most futile of minds to do that kind of thing!!! But, well, this craziness is really a Brazilian trait, I think. After the Emperor was dethroned and the Republic established, many millionaires here, even those who came as humble immigrants and founded factories, went to the Vatican in the first decades of the XXth century and bought titles of nobility... yes, during those days, the Pope SOLD these kinds of titles to whoever had the money to buy them!!! Now that is just wrong. I never knew that there could be so much secrecy and taboo behind seemingly innocent picture sales. :nono: John Marinello 04-25-2008, 01:39 PM http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/clt/653992430.html John Marinello 04-25-2008, 01:41 PM http://sacramento.craigslist.org/clt/653541603.html John Marinello 04-25-2008, 01:46 PM http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele/630377171.html Captain Video 05-02-2008, 03:10 PM http://cgi.ebay.com/Du-Mont-Television-Set-C-1957-w-owners-manual-WORKS_W0QQitemZ140228973610QQihZ004QQcategoryZ3638 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem yagosaga 05-02-2008, 05:33 PM http://bs.cyty.com/menschen/e-etzold/archiv/TV/marconi/img/707_withSignal.jpg andy 05-13-2008, 11:46 AM ... Captain Video 08-04-2008, 12:48 PM Very interesting. John Folsom 08-04-2008, 12:58 PM Oh no, not a home-brew at all. That unit is a Norelco "Duo-View" B&W projection TV adapter. The customer would purchase the (lower) unit, which consisted of a cabinet containing the projection optics and CRT (3NP4), HV power supply, horizontal and vertical deflection circuitry, LV power supply, deflection failure protection circuitry, and a cathode follower for the video. Video and horizontal and vertical signals were taken from the customers TV set as inputs to the projector. A band switch in the projection unit allowed the customer to either watch the TV or use the projection unit to display up to a 3' X 4' picture on an external screen (in a very dark room!). Captain Video 08-04-2008, 07:20 PM Looks like a VERY nice arrangement. If I had lived in those days, I would have liked to have something like this myself! How reliable it was? Tubejunke 08-09-2008, 02:53 AM Geez! I would think there would be some serious collectors driving the bids on that thing beyond $66. No telling what the reserve is..... I have an 8T-243 that is very similar. Top portion that is, although I am not lucky enough to have the double D crt border surround. Instead mine has the uglier rectangular style. I have always wondered why some sets with round crt's had double D and others rectangular. Anybody know?? David Roper 08-09-2008, 03:09 AM Double D masks came into vogue shortly after the first porthole sets appeared. Generally speaking, 1948 and earlier sets had rectangular masks; 1949 and later sets had double D masks. Why? Bigger image--at the expense of the corners. Apparently a negligible expense. wa2ise 08-10-2008, 08:57 PM http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=103582&d=1218419812 British TV with a penguin on top: :D Before it exploded... It kind of works as received, but I need to re-cap it. Tubejunke 08-16-2008, 02:50 AM Really I should re cap mine as after all these years the horizontal size takes a few minutes to fill the screen, and after about 20 minutes the vertical size starts shrinking at the bottom. Very likely these are both cap issues, the later may be a resistor changing value after heating up. I say this set would go another 50! Its built like a tank. It picks up channels clear as a bell with NO antenna, and the raster is bright and crisp as any I have ever seen. Does anybody know how Sparton ranked as far as quality?
