The left upper control is the Tone Register which is just a tone control. The other one is a Screen Register which is basically what Zenith used on later sets called a Picture control which is a sharpness adjustment. I believe that these designations were just used on the '54 models.

I had to sit an Airline set like this in my front yard with a "FREE take me" sign on it to get rid of it. I'm not joking. I needed the room and hoped the set may find a decent home. Back in the 80s when I needed room I would bust up a few sets. I cant do it anymore, not to a vintage set at least. I even kind of hate letting go of more recent sets like my familys 1983 Sears that served without missing a beat for over 20 years. Now the picure suddenly gets blurry after about 20 min. of perfect play time. I don't know much about solid state repair so the 27" floormodel continues to take up a lot of space in my living room. Eventually I must make a decision. Scrap or repair?? Pay to have repaired might work.

Did you move the test plug around on the pins to make sure there wasnt an intermittent connection? I run into this alot. Anytime I test a tube that has a glowing heater and ZERO emission I check (wiggle) things out. CRT's are the worst because the old ones like we deal with have a nasty habbit of the plug's epoxy/adhesive giving out and the plug is free to move around usually marginal pin soldering. In other words intermittent connection.

Also it is possible for the tester to have a problem. I only say this because if I were to test a crt with my old Sylvania I would get ZERO emission with a lit heater. I was fooled until I checked other tubes and found out my adapter harness has some stupid resistor of unknown value that has cracked in two. Oh well, maybe one day I'll find a schematic for the tester, or better yet a spare harness.

I hate the thought of this sitting outside in rainy Seattle. A few months ago a similar set was sitting under a pump carport of an old gas station made into an "antique" store. It was close to the road of course and looked as if nobody could possibly care if you loaded it up and gave it a home before the elements got the best of it. Something told me that I didnt want to go to jail over a 50 year old TV that some "antique" dealer cherished enough to put out in the rain (virtually). If everything around the TV werent garbage I would never consider really taking something from anyone. Honesty really is the best policy, at least in most cases. Imagine gettin busted for picking up the litter. Kind of a reverse "Alices Restaurant Massacree" by Arlo Guthrie...:music:

I slipped a note under the door of the place and explained that I would like to have the set and left my phone #. After a couple of weeks of not getting a call I went by and found the man running the place. The set was gone. He pointed at the dump site right across the highway and told me that he could not call my long distance # and had tossed the set in the crusher bins only a day or two prior. What a BUMMER!!:no:

This one is intersting to me as I have had a 21" version of this that seems to be following me through life. I found mine in working order in the hall of an old, closed up, downtown Hotel sometime around 1989. The flyback went out one night around 1994. Most people werent online back then and at the time I thought that I would NEVER find a replacement fly for an old Magnavox. I had grown attached to the TV so luckily I didnt scrap it out. This great site helped me locate an NOS part and the set works like we never skipped a beat. I am considering it as my next recap so I don't lose another hard to find transformer. I always hate ripping into unrestored sets that STILL WORK after all this time with their original capacitors. To me THAT is fascinating enough to risk leaving them alone. Anymore weather or not I recap depends on how often I plan on using a set....

That Bendix looks familiar to me; now I know why. I had a neighbor in my home town who had a Sears Silvertone 21-23" console that looked something like the set shown here (her set had a lighted channel indicator, though; other than that and a couple of other minor differences, mainly in the design of the front control panel, this set could have been a dead ringer for her Silvertone). Did Sears ever use Bendix designs or chassis layouts in their TVs or vice-versa? I'm speaking of old b&w sets like this one. I understand Sears' first roundie color sets in the '60s, however, were RCA CTC-12 clones and were actually manufactured by Warwick Electronics; I had a Silvertone roundie in 1970 that could have passed for a CTC12 and likely had that very chassis.

An interesting looking Zenith tabletop without the crazy high starting bid that seems to be the norm these days.

Nice condition, working and mostly recapped, very reasonable starting bid with no reserve.

I will be going to see the Stromberg Carlson in Grand Rapids the Saturday after Thanksgiving. I already spoke to the owner and he said the back is missing but the innerds look to all be there. Hope so, looks like a nice set.

UPDATE: I picked up the Stromberg Carlson today. WHAT A MONSTER! It a 19AP4 crt set. 2 chassis (main and power supply) Control panel is concealed under a small lift up cover (similar to the way a piano keyboard is covered) The strange part is that some of the knobs on the control panel use a speedometer cable flexible shaft system that extends the knobs on the control panel down to the acutal control which are located ont he chassis in the bottom of the set.

The set is still in the van and I won't be able to get photos until Monday. I will post the pictures on Monday.

There is no tube placement chart pasted inside the cabinet, and the back is missing. So if anyone has an idea of what the model number is, please clue me in. There are some numbers stamped in the chassis but I cant read them until the set is removed from my van on Monday. Perhaps that will give me a clue.


I also picked up the 21" 1956 Admiral color set in Detroit today too.

I put in a bid on the RCA after seeing a link in the Early Color forum, but I will be happy to make note of any good East Coast deals I see, thanks.

The 19" will match the diagonal measurement of the lit area of a 21" round color CRT, I am pretty sure. That became the official FTC way to measure and describe TV sizes in the late 1960's or 1970's, I think.

Oh my God! What a treasure for some LUCKY person! I always go crazy when one of these grandest of grand DuMont's pop up. Usually too far away and frankly too large but I would absolutely love to have another one of these. What I had was an RA-109A with a weak 19AP4. Too big, bad tube, had to go.

I think this model may be a bit smaller than what I had so if it was local I would jump on it. This could be a diamond in the rough......

UPDATE: I picked up the Stromberg Carlson today. The woman I got the set from said that it used to belong to her grandfather. He bought it new. I think this set cost a bundle when new. She said her grandfather was well to do. Worked as a factory worker in a leather factory. And he invested in Land, and he was very tight with his money.


Cabinet is about an 8 on the 10scale. Should be easy to fix up the dings and scrapes. WHAT A MONSTER! It looks quite a bit bigger than a 19" to me. There were some large round tubes made, mostly used by DuMont. The 19AP4 does seem to get a bad rap. I wonder if other metal/glass crts are as troublesome. The issue is vacuum loss at the seam. If that were the case they all would be trouble.

I wonder why they ever made the metal tubes.

I once had a Majestic TV (1951 model) which had a round 16GP4 CRT (metal cone). Never had one bit of trouble with the tube losing vacuum or anything else. Also, I did not realize that round CRTs had seams anywhere in or on them; in fact, I don't recall seeing a seam anywhere on the 16GP4 in my set. (I learn something new all the time reading the posts in these forums.)

Round metal-cone CRTs: I agree with you one hundred percent. Those tubes worked well enough, but the metal cone created the heck of a HV shock hazard, as I think the cone was one half of an HV filter capacitor, the bell of the tube being the other (this technique, IIRC, replaced doorknob HV caps in many if not most 1950s sets with round CRTs). IMHO, the best thing ever to happen to television CRTs was when the manufacturers gave up on metal-cone tubes and switched to glass exclusively, which all but eliminated the shock hazard.

I think you may be confusing Stromberg-Carlson with Setchell-Carlson; they were two different companies. Setchell-Carlson sets were known for having a modular "unitized" chassis, but weren't Stromberg-Carlson sets more typical in construction..?

The metal cone tubes have a seam where the glass face is bonded to the metal cone, they also have a seam where the neck is joined to the other end of the cone.
That said I have a 50+ year old 16AP4 that is still holding vacuum as was the worn out tube it replaced.
I think the bigger tubes (19", 24" 30") probably had more problems because of the larger joint surface and the extra expansion contraction problems.

The metal tubes don't hold a charge on their own but I guess you could still get shocked with the set off if the doorknob cap was charged up.
