To be honest, I can only think of a handful of Sci-Fi flicks that qualify (to me at least) as A-list films. IMO, everything else in the genre is by defintion a B-movie... I think that's why I love Sci-Fi so! Less pretention.

Zardoz = Wizard of Oz, the book that the immortal drops in front of Sean Connery to get him thinking. I like that movie a lot & had forgotten about it.

Yep, Sean was in that one. I don't remember if he got nekkid innit too, though... It's been a good 25 yrs since I saw it...Don't think they've ever played it on TV...Maybe too much nekkidity in it or something...

It is damned quirky alright, but not all that "British", IMO. As with most Boorman films, the visuals are unique.

I wonder if anyone recalls this abbreviated description (from what I can remember)? It was a late 50's, early 60's B&W, set in a swampy area like Louisiana. A couple scientists were working on some sort of teletransporter technology and are able to swap items with unknown individuals on the other end. Small items such as medals, figurines, maybe a book, etc. Some of the items are radioactive too. Eventually they figure out that they are in touch with a future "Earth" and those on the other side are plotting to come to an "Earth" that has not been laid open by nuclear war and chemical devastation. At one point one of the future people, a hideously deformed woman gets transported back to the "present" and the scientists end up hunting her down in the swamp before she can set open the portal for mass ingress from the decayed future.

Does this ring a bell with anyone? I don't remember much as I was pretty young, 8 or so when I saw it, and I did not get to finish it. About the time the guys went into the swamp with guns they showed the woman and my mom said "That's it!" and off to bed I went. Same thing happened on "Mysterious Island" when the giant crab came out of the ground and "The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T". I don't think I even got past the opening credits on that one. Probably what fuels my interest in sci-fi as so much of it I was not allowed to watch.

It mentions the mutant 4-eyed cat in the review of the movie. I'd forgotten that. That's definitely it! It says it was a companion film to "The Screaming Skull".

The Greatest B Grade (or C Grade for that matter) Sci Fi flick ever made was The Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price (c. 1959), an Italian made movie. Being that he was the last man alive, he went to the city radio station to drop a tonearm on his favorite record, so that he could broadcast it to himself while he drove about the city doing his errands, such as hunting zombies & picking up free groceries (hey, no one to pay to!)

Finally found my copy of "Night of the Comet" and bought a copy of "Hardware".

My copy of "Night of the Comet" has the original price tag on it; $77.99!

Omega Man is an enjoyable film. It has always been one of my personal faves but I do agree with the review here -

For some background, it was loosely based on the "I Am Legend" from the late 50's but it is its own film in its own right. I finally tracked the book down on Amazon and read it awhile back. The overall premise is the same but the details differ wildly. In Omega Man, the you have virus infected zombies. In I Am Legend you have vampires. There was truer to the book version which I've yet to see -

Will Smith might do a good job if he plays it as "Joe Everyman" which is who Neville in the book was. An average guy trying to figure out what happened during the day and fighting for his life at night. Originally Schwarzenegger was slotted for the role. Wrong choice as Neville was not an action hero at all.

How about putting up some recommended Polish sci-fi too?
