Thanks for the treat. It confirms the best way to do PC board work is to stay on the top if you can:)

Clipping out the old part and soldering the replacement to the stubs on the top side of the board was standard procedure if you were fixing the set in the customer's home. Saved the time and effort of pulling the chassis to get at the bottom of the board.

I wouldn't recommend it for restoration work on vintage sets, though. Would really look terrible to see every cap and off-spec resistor in a set replaced in that manner...

saved a fair amount of agony, and the less than pretty stubs are hidden from normal view anyway... :D
