This got lumped in with a group of furniture items that I got at auction for a dollar. I admit that I thought it was cute and wondered if I could restore it. That led me to this site. Honestly, I didn't realize there was actually this big of a hobby restoring old tube tvs. Anyway, it's a 1960 RCA Victor. Cabinet wasi perfectcondition untili hauledit home. It powers on and does make a snowy picture but horizontal and vertical don't last long. From reading threads here looks like I need to start with caps and testing the tubes. My plan was to hook up dvd player in a rec room and use it for old b&w programs through a converter box. Sound okay?
Found a service manual on eBay so I'll have be the details before long.

Its probably best to start by repairing the set before going crazy
with a full restore. Having a nice snow picture is a good start.
Shows that it wants to work & most stages are working still.
Hook up the DVD & put up screen shots of any symptoms. The
gang here will help out best they can.
Also whenever you ask questions put in the chassis number
(starts with KCS***) & model ##. You will have fun showing

Yes, you have got the general idea. Have you restored any tube radios before? If so, doing a B/W TV is not such a huge leap -- more of the same, for the most part. If you have seen your screen light up, you know that the most critical parts, such as flyback transformer and CRT, are operational.

The third page lists a number of TV restoration articles. Of those, the RCA CTC-11 is about the closest in age to yours, although being a color set, it's a little more complicated than a B/W set. Skimming one or two of those articles should give you a general idea what it takes to revive an old tube TV, anyhow.

It's definitely a good idea to get your feet wet first by doing capacitor replacement on a All American 5 tube radio. If you make a mistake it's much less difficult to find it in a radio.

If you can I'd recommend powering it up on a dim bulb tester or preferably slowly on a variac the first time. If it has not been turned on in over 6 months there is a good chance the electrolytics need to reform which will only happen with a slow controlled power up.

I just finished recapping a farm radio and replacing some of the resistors but that's pretty basic. I have an AM- shortwave radio next on the bench. The TV will wait is turn.

No fooling! Back when I was a mere lad (who collected tube radios), almost a decade ago, I decided that I wanted exactly ONE example each of a tube monochrome and tube color set....I now have over 20 tube sets, and that does not count SS sets I keep around or sets that I've later resold....

For me it's mostly one flat surface: the floor.

Damthings are as bad-Or WORSE-than Radidios... Lotsa people like old radios, but it takes a SPECIAL kind of Psychotic to see love & beauty in a 1958 21" RCA console B&W TeeVee... At least the early postwar 7" sets ARE Cute, & usually small... A guy told me a LONG time ago-Radios almost BEG to be brought back to life... But TVs ? They DIE, & wanna STAY that way.. That's not ENTIRELY true, but...

lol. I think you misread wanting just two sets(a color and a monochrome) as wanting one of each set made...

Sandy what you say has truth in it, but you overlook one thing...Some TVs don't want to stay working properly after a resto (as well as subsequent tweaking) long enough / develop confounding enough intermittents that they make their caretakers wish they would die...

No worries here about collecting too many. I'll only keep this one if I can fix it. It still may end up in the trash or donated. Two weeks ago I had no idea people even collected old tvs. Now, if I happened across one of those little 7 inch sets from the 40s or 50s that might be a different story. Those are just too cute.

Please don't trash it! Even it if has some problem not worth fixing it is still a good source of parts to fix other sets with.
