My last purchase was the movie "AND JUSTICE FOR ALL" (Havent seen that movie in years)

I am quite picky when i find VHS movies.. I only get ones that HAVE NOT BEEN DIGITALLY ALTERED IN ANYWAY!! (Digitally Mastered,Digitally Recorded,Dolby Digital,etc) it takes away from the good quality of the movie...... They dont look/sound anywhere near as good with digital crap in them....... (In my opinion)

My last VHS hardware purchase was my Panasonic PV-4022 VCR, back in 2002. Still have it, and it still works, :yes: but I don't use it often these days since getting a DVD player. The only reason I bought it was to replace another Panasonic machine, with VCR Plus, that had eaten a tape; I had to practically wreck the VCR to get the cassette out. To make matters worse, I had just recorded a TV movie on that cassette a short time before the VCR ruined it. Never got a chance to see any of the film. :no: I wish I could remember the title of the film I lost; if I knew it, I'd try to find it on DVD. ...... Oh, well.

I never bought pre-recorded VHS (or Beta) tapes at all, except for a few music-video ones. Tape recorders (video or audio) were always for making your OWN recordings to me; discs (laser, vinyl, or others) were the way to buy movies and music, no comparison.

My last VHS purchase was a brand-new Panasonic Hi-Fi VCR that I gave my mother for Christmas in 2004. That machine cost maybe $60 or $70 new, and it set EVERYTHING by itself (antenna versus cable, scan for channels, self-set clock from over-the-air signal) when I first plugged it in, without even going into any menus if I remember right.

My last purchase was the movie "THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING WOMAN" Which wasnt recorded in SP mode sadly (It was in LP which is almost as good) and thus didnt sound QUITE AS GOOD as it could of....

I don't recall ever buying any new pre-recorded tapes; however, I recorded a lot of stuff off of cable.

My last new VCR purchase was a "last gasp" Funai-built Emerson from around '06. Something happened to whatever VCR I had at the time and I wanted to record something; so, I ran to China-Mart and handed them the $39 for the Emerson. As you probably expect, it was the worst VCR I've ever owned. The silver plastic blob weighed maybe two pounds and it wasn't long before it started suddenly stopping on it's own. The final straw was when it ate one of my tapes and that's when I cut off the power cord and tossed the rest. Shortly after, my neighbor died and I ended up buying his late '90's Sharp VCR; which, still works fine.

I think that cheap China-Mart VCR was one of the last ones they had and it wasn't long before the equally crappy DVD/VCR combinations came out that didn't even have a tuner built into them.

A couple of years ago, I ended up purchasing a used VHS copy of "The Competition" with Richard Dreyfuss and Amy Irving, after my 25+ year old copy (off of HBO) was lost. This movie has not been issued on DVD. :(

About 5 years ago I purchased what is likely my last new VHS player, a Panasonic DMR-EZ47V which is a combo unit that records and plays *both* VHS and DVDs. The Panasonic seems to be a fairly high quality, solid unit and contains a NTSC and ATSC tuner for recording off the air, as well as cable channel capability.

I bought a box of 25 railroad-themed VHS tapes for $10 at a train show in Baltimore at this time a year ago...

Just bought a portable Quasar VA546QA from that place. Full working and a remote for $10. Got it to power my collection of 10-pin cameras of the era. RCA CC-001, CC-002, CC-030 with the Indextron viewfinder, GBC CTC-5X (twin of the CC-002), Sharp XX (little cam with the tube in the handle), and an unknown RCA BW CC-XXX.

The last big retail deck I bought was a RCA VMT-400 HQ Digital deck from 1987. $700. Has early DRAM digital tricks. Freeze frame, posterization, mosaic and PIP but a noisy bearing somewhere. BPCVHS since then and they are gone.

My last purchase was the movie THE TOY (1982)

I have this but its recorded in SLP mode and not the best quality :(

Last VCR was Mitsubishi HS-U446. Last VHS I bough were copies of The Mind's Eye and beyond the Mind's Eye. Last movie rented was Dr. Zhivago, as they did not have it on DVD.

I look back now and wonder how we ever tolerated VHS. :p

Yep those skinny 19 micron-wide tracks at SLP just don't retain as much magnetic flux as the 58 micron-wide tracks laid down on the tape by dedicated duplicating machines. SP tapes recorded on a 4 head machine should do as well as pre-recorded tapes though. Plus SLP (EP) 19 micron tracks require more precise tape path alignment for decent interchange between different playback VCRs.

This movie is an example of a transfer they didnt do right..... @ the very top its a different colour thru most of the movie.. (They must have had other equiptment TOO CLOSE to the unit while they were copying it (Like when you place a magnet too close to the screen)) -- Its sad they didnt notice this!! (If they did maybe they could have re-done it) -- It was OK,not that good though....... (Just a car chase thru the whole movie)

4) Its a wonderful life (1946?)-- I had a 1999 release of this movie by ARTISAN i got a couple months ago and it was aweful!! (Flat,etc) -- I couldnt watch it,it obviously had been altered..... I got rid of it!

Yesterday i found a 1993 release from REPUBLIC PICTURES and its 1000% better! (The original recording) I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!

I've given away to thrift stores most of my VHS collection around 900 tapes. I've still got several hundred keeper recordings, and 4 or 5 nice low-mileage machines to play them on.

Still got some Beta stuff, too, and 3 really nice machines for them, too.

Blake's 7 with the last two episodes Warlord and Blake , i have the series on vhs from pbs in the 80's but couldn't find the last two episodes ( i think the taped was tossed on me ) so i bought it from ebay , all these including the vhs tape were bounced to discs .

shortly before that i bought a JVC used hi fi player from ebay with sqpb , HS-A51U , these are great for sharp image playback and even svhs looks good although not as good as when played on a svhs vcr.

btw i have that its a wonderful life vhs , it might even be newer , looks nice but when i got the recent remastered dvd i must say its even more wonderful , you get the colorized one too and its a joke , i can't sit through it , less contrast , less clarity.

I still have a load of the VHS tapes from when they were first released in the 1980's.

The pilot starred Jeff Hunter. It was made into a 2-parter show... (#16-1, and #16-2) the show where Spock is being tried in court.

I ran 16mm prints of the original series on TV for alot of years.

Man trap was the first to air on nbc because it was a planet episode with colorful scenes , funny because its one of the few monster episodes and it was a show being promoted as the first adult space drama and not a monster of the week show.

i have some of those trek tapes if your interested , i'm not going to hold onto them

I last bought a MR ROGERS episode ("Mr Rogers talks about Parents being away") -- It is 66 Mins which is strange because most of the shows he did are 30 mins! (This must be a special HOME VIDEO show cause @ the end he doesnt say "Its good to that Ill be back when the day is new and ill have more ideas for you......." he says "Its good to know im your friend")

I used to love that show,i feel sad that fred Passed away...I feel his show means MORE than the garbage on PBS now!

I think His show is still on PBS on sat mornings (It used to be) but im not sure........ Its really sad,good programming replaced with crap!

But what I bought sounds very good .You can find brand new tapes on eBay and amazon.com for about 2.00 to 5.00 buck . I managed to find some good movies like The aviator 2004 Movie on VHS I thought was never realesed on tape .

I've never heard of a production movie released in SLP. That's really strange.

My director's cut is in SP. 150 minutes in length.

EP can look pretty good. Though it is highly dependent on tape quality, recorder quality, player quality, and the degree to which the calibration of player and recorder agree....

Yes it can but usually it does not..... The nicest experience is usually SP mode :)

Today I purchased 4 Laurel and Hardy episodes on 1 VHS tape (I love that show and havent seen them in many years)

They are recorded in LP mode but they are OK.. (I knew it wouldnt be as good as SP but I love laurel and hardy and havent seen them in MANY YEARS!! -- These 4 shows have talking in them (Alot of thier shows do not (I DONT LIKE THOSE VERY MUCH)))

I still time shift with my VCR today .I'm not fond of using my DVD recorders because I dont trust them and I dont need anymore coasters or mini frisbees from it.

Thank goodness that Walmart still carries blank VHS tapes.BJ's stop stocking them a year ago.

For pre-recorded tapes.I cant recall what was my last purchase.I got dozens given to me and purchased used ones at the fleamarket over the years.

For new VCR's s .It was back in 1998.I picked up a tons of used working VCR's at the fleamarket.

Also VCR's that were given to me plus ones I found in the trash and at the curb.

Since I was in repairing them I probably have 200 plus here in my garage,basement and shed just for parts.

I dread the day when the stores stop carrying VHS tapes and I got to use the DVD recorders.

I'm glad that some of the TV nets or places that have complete episodes of TV shows that I can watch online.

I got THE HOWDY DOODY SHOW today @ salvation army :)

There are 4 episodes on this tape! -- When I saw yesterday it was put on the tape in 2000,i didnt wanna get it as I didnt know if they just put the digital master of it on the tape (GARBAGE) and I dont want that,i can see enough of that compromised analog stuff on cable TV or DirecTV,when i get VHS i want the nicest analog quality!!

Today When I was @ salvation army,i figured i would give it a try since It wasnt put on by one of the big companies that might do that... It was put on by NBC HOME VIDEO and its georgeous!

The Original 35mm master WAS USED!!!!!!!!! -- IT EVEN HAS THE ORIGINAL NBC TONES @ THE END OF THE SHOW!! (Ya know it goes bong,bong,bong...... While displaying NBC on screen)

I havent ever seen 1 episode of this show before today......I watched 2 so far :)

A few nights ago my son and I bought the movies ' GONE WITH WIND ' and ' SON OF FLUBBER '. Son of Flubber was never opened. Gone with Wind is two tape boxed set with a booklet. Plan is to copy them to DVD for my wife.

-Enter The Dragon SE, 75 cents. Panavision in Pan and scan so I rented the DVD and recorded over the feature! Won't have linear stereo anymore but it's hifi of course.

I have loved this movie for years! (Killing streets) only had it recorded off cable TV from the 90s and it wasnt in the best quality.. (SLP mode)

I was glad it was NOT COMPROMISED on VHS! (Digitally altered) and the soundtrack is ULTRA STEREO so I was quite glad!!!! (Alot of movies in the 90s started to use more and more digital crap that took away the good analogue quality :()

It is EXCELLENT!!!!! (analog is beautiful)

Yesterday I found Star Wars 2 (1980) @ salvation army!!!! (ORIGINAL -- NOTHING DIGITAL/NO CHANGES)

I last got the movie back to the future (1985) on VHS the other day....

It was in a bin of home made VHS tapes @ salvation army (THEY WERE NOT GONNA BE PUT UP AS THEY WERE NOT THE OFFICAL TAPES OF MOVIES (People recorded them from cable TV))

This tape was recorded 4/1/87 off analog cable (HBO) and is beautiful...... I have had the 3 parts of back to the future on their official tapes for awhile but all 3 are DIGITALLY RECORDED and look like crap to me...... I forgot about pay channels having thier own analog masters of movies in the 80s... (The only place I knew of is videodisc to get the first part IN ANALOG.. I had forgotton about pay TV services))

I am quite glad the guy let me go thru this bin...... (THEY WERE SENDING IT BACK OUT,WERENT GONNA PUT ANY UP WHICH IS SAD but in todays world you cant take a chance on someone getting porn,etc (THEY ALL SADLY CANT BE VERIFIED (Too many) :())

I got 2 excellent movies out of that bin before It was taken..... I also got THE FUGITIVE - 1993 (In SP mode) the day before also recorded off analogue cable (HBO) and this one has a very special treat @ the start of the movie! (That beautiful intro HBO used to have where they go over a city) See it below!!

I know where a couple large boxes of recorded movies are. I'll need to look over them again and see if it would be worth making an offer on the entire lot. There's also several at a pawn shop. Gotta go through those too. Interesting to see the older commercials from long ago. Last vhs i got was a week ago. Lost in Space, the One with Jet Li and classic Star Trek The Corbomite Maneuver. Found in a dumpster. Complete with boxes. I know the Salvation Army gets a lot of movies. Always check them out when i go. We have two SAs here plus a Goodwill and another local shop plus a few other places for used items

9 to 5 - 1980 (I have this but this one I just got is the original CBS/FOX release in 1984 and is MUCH NICER! (The Original reel to reel master is on the tape opposed to the newer HOME VIDEO master on my 1995 copy.. (Better colours,etc)))

I THINK ITS SAFE TO SAY RECKLESS IS HIS BEST ALBUM -- OH MY.......... And the last song was a surprise as it WASNT LISTED ON THE TAPE BOX AS ONE OF THE SONGS ON THE COLLECTION! ("One night love affair" -- (Played during the ending credits) OH MY....this song is in the movie 'REAL GENIUS' (1985) also and it sounds JUST AS GOOD!!! -- I am so glad this tape WAS NOT DIGITALLY COMPROMISED!!!!!!! (I had THE DOORS 'LIVE IN EUROPE' (1968) on VHS also the other day and it sounded like crap..... At the end of the tape I discovered why "Sound Mix: Digital enterprises" (Or something "Digital") I got rid of it!!

I have a doors greatest hits 2 record set.... I can hear thier stuff in 100% analogue! (Much nicer IN MY OPINION)

Excellent concert..... NO COMMERCIALS AND FULL SCREEN!! (I think USA is too greedy these days to air a concert of that length WITH NO SPAM ADS!! (Crap on the screen,etc))


Only thing is THE TAPE RAN OUT :D (But there was over 2 hrs and what WAS THERE was fabulous 80s grateful dead)

Today I was @ salvation Army and I found Star trek 1-5 (Seperate releases not the newer 6 pak of all star trek movies together)

I have thankfully been able to replace my star trek copies (1-5 (90s releases)) months ago with original releases which are MUCH BETTER! (Nothing digital in the transfer)

Well today I got the box for Star trek 5 as I have the original 1989 tape but I didnt have the original box....

Something told me to HOLD ONTO THAT TAPE I HAD (Not blindly replace it with the brand new copy (Unopened) I got today)

Looking @ the label on the tape I could tell it wasnt exactly the same..... I put it in and it was crap (Like the newer star trek 1-6,recorded the same way)) They got rid of that stuff @ the beggining and the contrast was slighter darker....... I dont know if it was digitally transferred but it certainly wasnt as good as the other copy I found @ salvation army months ago!! (It was soaked,semi wet.. Left outside in the rain) -- I was hopefull I could save it...... I bought it and let it dry until the next day before trying it.........

So the copy I found today was a NEWER 1989 copy (Apparently after they started compromising the star trek movies)

Now the only one I dont have the original of is Star Trek 6 (1991) -- I dunno if its out there,probably not....... (Ill take the first 5 believe me -- MUCH NICER)

Its quite sad but Im glad I listenend to my instincts!!!!

Theres two Salvation Army stores here where I'm at. One of them being a superstore and they usually have a decent selection. Theres another thrift store also gthat keeps a lot in all the time.

Maybe we will live long enough to see VHS make the same comeback that vinyl has. There was another vendor who owns vhsps.com (VHS Preservation Society) picking up OOP VHS and xfering them to DVD.

And I met one Christopher Mihm who writes, produces and directs cheezy, original films in the style of the 50's horror and sci-fi. He is from Minnesota and has about 8 titles out there. I bought his DVD of "The Giant Spider"..."Eight creeping crawling legs of sheer terror!" Lots of extras and the audio is in English/Esperanto. Even the DVD case artwork is in the 50's screaming style of horror. If I can pull a few stills, I will post them in "off topic" with my review. Stay tuned.

I never knew, that classic movie, was made out East.
I think I have an original copie of it.
Until I got the movie, I haven't seen it, for like 30 years.
I think the people that were there, were more concerned about the small dog, than the people, that were consumed by the blob. :D

Haha, Aunt Bunnie..I was always a fan of comedy in general, and Eddie Murphy really had the audience roaring with Delirious. I watched it that same night I bought all those tapes. It played great luckily! I'm surprised someone let it go...Even if you dump your vcr, it's tough to part with classic tapes like this one in my opinion!

I've said it many times before, "People are fools". It's good for us though.
One of the other movies, I was seeking, "Cheech and Chong's next movie.
The welfare office scene and the way they harassed the neighbor, next door.
I don't know how someone couldn't get a laugh out of that! :D

Today I got Close Encounters of the third Kind - 1977 :)

I was happy to spot this today... A couple weeks ago there was another copy of this movie there but it was a newer one that had been DIGITALLY MASTERED and I dont want that crap!!!!!

This is a special edition,I guess it includes the whole movie (No cuts) a re-release in the early 80s...... I havent seen this in 25+ years! (Im glad to have found an original/unmolested copy)

A few years back i picked up a copy of Radioactive Dreams at the goodwill. A great and cheesy 80s post apocalyptic comedy. Think i paid a full 50 cents for it.

Hadnt seen it in years, couldnt find it on dvd. I snagged that baby the second i saw it on their rack :)

Today I got the movie "Follow that Bird" (1985) :)

Last week, I picked up a VHS tape that is the pilot episode of a short-lived TV series called "The Duke", from the late 1970s. Not a chance this will ever be on DVD or Laser Disc, much less Blu-ray. Now I need to hook up a VHS machine to see if it looks any good. The box and tape look VERY cheaply made.

I hope its good buddy!!!

The very last VHS tape I will purchased and will probably be the last tape I ever purchase. Is the "X" rated howlingly stupid, but outrageously funny parody of the Buster Crab's Flash Gordon serials of the late 1930's called Flesh Gordon. It is vital to watch some of the original serials before you watch "Flesh" otherwise it will make no sense. Emperor Wang (the Perverted) of the Planet Porno is shooting Earth with sex beams. Flesh Gordon is on his way back from the Andes Mountains when the plane his is in gets hit with a sex beam. From Here Flesh meets Dale Ardor, who is constantly getting her cloths ripped off, Dr. Flexi Jerkoff, and his "interesting" rocket ship that starts with a VW key Emperor Wang the Perverted, Queen Amora, Prince Precious, and of course "The Power Pasties" The movie also answers the question I know very well you have always been curious about. How does a monster who only has three fingers on each hand flip somebody off, the answer, they can't.

Today I got: Airport - (1970) This was a 1992 release by MCA/Universal .. Most movies MCA/Universal transferred to VHS starting in 1991 were digitally recorded to the tape,THIS ONE IS NOT.. It has the original MCA HOME VIDEO master on it so I am hopefull its the original analogue master that THAT MOVIE was filmed in....

I got rid of the tape... Wasnt the original. Had letterbox all over it @ different parts.. (Only watched about 10 mins)

Ill try again and see if I can find an earlier copy that hasnt been ruined...

The later Pan/Scan releases of Airport zoomed out to letterbox at certain parts to account for the split screen effect. I think only the original 1980 MCA videocassette release eliminates the split screen to fill the entire frame.

It says 1984 on the tape so I assume they made this in 1984 (It was a 1981 release)

The Duke is an American mini series that aired shown on NBC from April 5 to May 18, 1979.

The Duke follows an aging boxer who became a private investigator. This Chicago, Illinois-set series starred Robert Conrad as Oscar "Duke" Ramsey; Conrad was actually a professional fighter in his own early years.

The executive producer was Stephen J. Cannell, the show was produced by Stephen J. Cannell Productions, in association with Universal TV.

My son had a snow day yesterday, so we went over to
our local Goodwill. He found the oldest vhs video tape
we now own.
It's a 1982 MCA copy of " Silence of the North ". We
ran the tape. The colors tend to bleed, a little blurry. It
was a rental store copy.

I last got the movie RETURN OF THE JEDI (1983) on VHS (Star Wars 3)

It was recorded in LP mode off cable TV (HBO I think?) in the 80s and is georgeous!! (No changes,nothing digital)

I hope my mum and dad still kept all the old vhs tapes somewhere but i doubt it.
When i get a vcr back i can watch all those old classics again in full analogue glory :D

I can't believe anyone on this forum, doesn't have a VHS VCR. I lost count of how many, I have. I even have one Sony Beta, the only Beta, I would own.

I tend to like the Sanyo models a little better....Built like tanks, usually seem to require no repairs to work, and they don't keep the tape pressed up against the drum on rewind and fast forward reducing head/tape wear, and improving the speed of those functions.

I picked up a VHS tape at a thrift. Don't remember the name, but it was a demo tape. Every 10 minuites or so, it flashed on the screen, demo tape only, not to be sold or rented. :nono:

Machine: Mitsubishi deck purchased from Magnolia Hi Fi (before the Best Buy era) in 1998. Bought the extended warranty, and it went out 1.5 years in. The replacement has been going since. It has the old VCR+ function. Still use it to record shows off cable. Too cheap to pay DVR rental. it gets 10 - 15 hrs a week of use between record and playback.

Tape: "Greatest Story Ever Told" 2 tape set, and "Stalag 17", both from same thrift, 50 cents a piece, IIRC, about 2 years ago.

There were some non-pay service DVRs made. I have a Panisonic DVR/DVD recorder (gotten cheap at a thrift store) that I use as a back up recorder incase the Toshiba DVD recorder I use to archive my favorite shows on has a glitch.

I don't know what it is, but i've been having a heck of a time finding any beta movies or beta tapes for that matter. I've been to about four or five different thrift stores, two local flea markets, even pawn shops. Nobody around where i live seems to have anything. I do realize that beta wasn't around as long as VHS but it puzzles me to think, there's got to be at least someone out there lol, i live in a City of a population of 663,617 people! It's not quite the season here yet for yard/garage sales either. Even just trying find a Beta player on Kijiji can take several months if not longer. I understand people think why bother if the stuff isn't worth anything, why goto the bother of posting it online. Then along comes somebody like me and people think i'm crazy for wanting this old stuff lol.

There is a good market for some beta players. Try finding a cheap working Super-BetaHiFi or EDbeta on ebay....they sell for a fortune.

Tapes are much less plentiful these days. I can count on one hand the number of loose tapes I've found in thrifts so far....I may have got more tapes by bringing home decks and hitting the eject button. LOL.

Tom! Are you referring to new Beta or VHS tapes?
I picked several new VHS tapes at the various thrifts. They usually have them mixed in with the used pre-recorded tapes. I'll buy them for .25 or .50 each. Only the good quality brands.
Now, a lot of the thrifts are getting ex-rental tapes from the stores going out of business. Most of them are pretty ratty.

That post was all Betamax....I can walk into any local thrift and come back with more VHS tapes then I'd ever get to watching, but Beta fugedaboutit.

I'm constantly running into VHS all the time. Always going through them to see if there's anything i need. I never see beta at all. There was actually a Sanyo Beta unit at one of the Salvation Army stores but i usually avoid anything Sanyo plus it was missing a door on the front.

Actually, Sanyo had a better idea with their Beta models. They would retract the tape back into the cassette for full rewind, saving wear on the head drum. Saw a ton of Sonys with worn drums that caused so much stiction drag on the tape some couldn't rewind all the way without shutting down.

The Sanyo betas tended to be built like tanks, and semi immortal. If it is still there grab it.

Been long gone. This was some months back.

Finally got around to fixing these, what a pain in the %^^&$!!! Yes Sanyo or Sony or any other Beta player seems like a urban myth around here lol. I actually had to make Idler tires out of elastic bands to get the Hifi working. I hooked up an old Sony Walkman to the Audio In and had the radio playing through the TV speakers with the FM switch. Interesting to note the 7200 sold for $700 brand new in 1984 which would be just over $1500 with the inflation now. Now I'm just on a quest for those darn beta tapes!

The Sanyo remote is for the 1984 Sanyo VCR 7200 Hifi on the bottom. I don't have the one for the 1984 Sanyo Betacord 4650. Although the remote does work for both of them :) I believe they both use the same remote. The functions on the remote are pretty primitive to today's standards. VCR/TV, POWER, TV CH - UP & DOWN, REC ON & OFF, REW, PLAY, FF, STOP and PAUSE/STILL. Wish they would have added a EJECT button. I've also noticed on the 4650 models the 84' Summer Olympics Logo, i guess they were promoting that unit for the games.

Up in Kutztown today getting ready for our DVHRC Kutztown event. Stopped by a retro vinyl/cd/dvd/vhs store. Found a 1979 Fox VHS issue of The Day The Earth Stood Still. Near mint sleeve and the VHS was like unviewed. A cheap $2.65 of entertainment tonight. But the VHS was not re-mastered...just an air version that still had the punch holes in the upper right for a reel change at your local station probably from a 16mm print. It had a video issue where the video level would jump up and down at intervals. I suspect Macrovision that my Sony could not handle. I will try it on my JVC TBC deck.

I passed on two-volume sets of Ten Commandments and Ben Hur probably in pan-and-scan 4x3. Maybe later. 36 years later and Gort is still playing as good as new on VHS. Take that DVD.

At Kutztown BIN I paid $1 for three bankers boxes full of someone's off-cable VHS collection. About 90 in all. Mostly T120's and a bunch of T160's that look unused. The few I have looked through are typical 6hr recording format from TVland shows. And a few PBS musical specials. They seem to be from the late 80's. More to browse through but if nothing else, I got a ton of reusable tapes. Maybe I will record Letterman's last shows on VHS for fun.

How true. I've went to some local estate sales on 'everything must go' day and filled some paper shopping bags (1$ for a bag of anything you put in it) with tapes.

The last movie I got was THE DREAM TEAM (1989) -- This one IS NOT DIGITALLY RECORDED and looks (to me) 100% better! (And the audio is better also)

The original MCA release (1989) is DIGITALLY RECORDED and its sad really!!

Most recently, I purchased two secondhand movies on VHS tapes from a thrift store: Ocean's Eleven (the "remake") and Rain Main.

I was going to make the effort to haul out the 30 year old Zenith 13" table TV and Penney's 2 head VCR, but at least for Ocean's Eleven, I just watched on a Toshiba DVD/VHS combo rescued from the curb a few years ago, and a Panasonic 42" plasma TV because both were set up and ready to go.

The upscaler in the Panasonic TV did an impressive job.

Don't remember the last tape I purchased, but right now dubbing "Days Of Wine And Roses", the 1958 TV production with Cliff Robertson and Piper Laurie. The recording was originally made as a kinescope on film, and the artifacts are certainly visible. It adds to the 'charm". Almost as good as a video tape original.

Around the beginning of the year .I got some self recorded tapes from my neighbor with movies and some TV shows on them.

Thats why i picked it up. I had this version awhile back but the box was missing the insert that keeps the tape from going all the way in because the box is bigger than the tape. I already have the THX version and the CED version.

All six Star Trek movies today at a flea market. #1 is a "longer version" by 12 minutes. 1-4 unopened. Never knew the spine art was continuous. Not sure of the age of this set. $5 for all. Viewing party tonight.

And 10 wrapped Sony T120's at SA for .99 each.

I just got another 15 Dr. Who VHS tapes. I've been trying to collect all the Dr. Who that was put on VHS. I have probably about 1/3 of it now. I had recorded most of Dr. Who off TV in the late 1980s, but didn't keep the tapes and now regret it, so I thought I would try and pick up a nice set of the pre-recorded ones.

What I don't like about tape is having to put up with the picture bending at the top of the screen. But then many DVDs have those awful retrace lines, so they both have their problems.

I used to have a bunch of Dr. Who a couple years ago that someone had recorded. You could tell they were very old. Wish i had kept them now. They seemed in the way at the time and i tossed them with a bunch of other junk.

They ruined short circuit on vhs,IT WAS DIGITALLY RE-RECORDED FOR VHS ..What exactly did they "ruin"?
I guess I've never noticed the problem. Although I don't watch very many pre-recorded movie tapes these days.

I dont trust my DVD recorders since they sometimes make coasters instead of recording my shows.

Walmart still stocks them here in town.

I have a pioneer that plays what it wants to. Probably needs lens cleaned. Now my Magnavox is starting to act up. Most people dont take care of the discs so buying used is barely even an option. They need to quit making all this junk. VCRs worked just fine. What was so wrong with them?

Blame it on the media on TV , print and online and the idiots that say that DVD will last forever years ago.

Not a purchase but I just curb pickup a full box of pre recorded and home recorded VHS tapes with movie probably recorded from HBO or Showtime .

Would be interesting. I tend to favor the older "Natural" look and sound of tv from 70's-80's. Also looking for vintage commercials.

Just bought two, three packs of TDK T160 tapes. A closeout at the drugstore, where I buy my Tracphone card. $2.59 per three pack.
I try to buy them, whenever I can, as long as they're reasonably priced.

Maxell VP-200. Never had a problem with any head cleaner except the stupid Maxell tapes that do the audio channel test, etc. Those never work for me.

The wet-type (Allsop, Bib) no good. Seen too many broken heads and little strands of the cleaning material left bebind on the remnants of the heads. Or at the least they will pick up some tape oxide contamination then ring it out at the pinch roller leaving deposits on the capstan that can be really difficult to properly clean off.

Dry cleaner tapes like Scotch, Fuji OK, never seen one damage heads. We used to sell those at the front counter. All they are really good for is maybe unclogging the cylinder heads anyway. They do little to nothing to guides rollers and stationary heads.

wow. Ive never had a problem and always worked when i needed them. At least since the late 80's. Never had a head failure. I did wear out a Sony once. Probably had 300,000 miles on it time i got through with it. One of those SLV-750HF types or similar.

Of course the only ones I ever saw were the ones with damaged heads that came across my repair bench. But I used to see many with the rings of encrusted crap on the top and bottom of the capstan shaft from the wet stuff getting squeezed out exiting from the pinch roller.

The Beta Sonys in the '80s like the front-loader SL-2500 and the portable SL-2000 would get broken off tape guides from the wet-type cleaners like Bib and Allsop.

Only beta cleaner i have is a TDK SCL-30 and i've never needed it.

Please dont say that word pac! (The N word)

I did a search and this GOODTIMES copy (1985) is the only one in SP mode I saw!

2) Rollercoaster - 1977
3) No Escape - 1994

Yeah, I usually buy in bulk when I can. Then there's times when I can only find 2 or 3 I like. The old collection is growing steady. I'm headed for 1000. :thmbsp:

I got another copy of NO ESCAPE because the first one I had was bad... Kept messing up my VCR.. (Thank goodness I have a head cleaning tape)

I threw the bad one away.....
