Not really a purchase, but a relative of mine gave me a huge load of VHS tapes with Doctor Who episodes recorded on them! This haul has been a few years in the making, but I'm now the proud owner of well over 100+ tapes of various episodes which were home-recorded off of PBS in the '80s and '90s, comprising numerous episodes from the first to the seventh Doctors, plus a pre-recorded tape of one of the theatrical features from the '60s, Dr. Who and the Daleks (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0059126) (not related to the 1963 episode of nearly the same name). Haven't watched any of them yet, but it should make for some out-of-this-world viewing! sorry........

No, the 90 was a remake. I think the original is something like 61. Of course it would be I black and white. I've seen some low budget movies that made it big time. Example being the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I think about a $500 budget. Franklin in the wheelchair had his pay heck in his shirt pocket when he fell down the hill when trying to pee.

Thrift shops here can't keep em. They sell really well at $1 each here. I buy as many as I can and others buy Alot too as when I return, there's others gone but more always comes in. I love beta but considering how I've only found two in the wild and one was a workout video, beta is more something I have to order when I want them.

I've found 3 lots of CED here in the last 3 years and I bought the biggest one. I have close to 100 of theM with a working machine. Since the, there has been a few at one thrift shop where I bought a couple and several more turned up at the Starvation Army. I wasn't interested in any of them. Still, pretty rare in any case.

About twice have I seen CEDs in those type of venues in the last 5 years, but I see them a LOT at the thrift stores...Probably north of 20 times in the last 5 years.

I've gotten around 10 Beta tapes from thrifts in the last few years, and about as many beta decks. Fairly common out here, but it is always a slow trickle of tapes maybe one or two at a time (about half the time inside a deck I bought), lots are hard to come upon except a crate of rentals at a ham fest, and a BUNCH of shrink wrapped blanks, and recorded tapes with a betacam (t'was a granny's rig and the crappy cameraman-ship was comical).

Not bad at all. I think I may have paid a buck. A must have in my opinion. I really like the return of the Living Dead but the 2 and 3 of that didn't impress me at all really. Dawn of the dead is great too.

The old movie I thought was far out was the original "Little Shop of Horrors". That one turned out to have a following. I picked up a copy, that was really messed up.

Regarding the Vampires, I don't anyone else can see them either.

I picked up 44 VHS tapes of the Twilight Zone. I think it's a complete set, but I'll have to look them over more carefully to be sure...

The complete original series of Star Trek from Craigslist. I kind of like the old special effects better than the remastered version. So many of the new CGI effects on this series looks plasticy for lack of a better way to put it.

I wouldn't mind picking up a set of original Star Treks on VHS. I have 18 DVDs, 2 episodes each, that are the old unmodified effects versions, but that's far from a complete set.

I also just picked up 44 VHS tapes of the Outer Limits, but unlike my Twilight Zones, that's 4 tapes short of being a complete set.

The last couple of times I was at Walmart .There were out of blank VHS tapes on the shelf and the price sticker on the shelf was gone.I looked online and it said the Memorex tapes are still available and only in the stores.

I think the numnuts in the electronics dept here in the store figure on getting rid of them altogether since they are pro digital idiots and have all current crap only there on the shelves. .Now I have to order online.

I was down there a couple nights ago and notice a open space on the shelves for a 3 pack for $12.97 bucks probably coming in soon.I did not see what brand it will be stocking.I refuse to ask the help there as they look at you if you have two heads like the RatShack clerks did when ask a question about retro analog electronics .I'm surprised that they still carry blank cassettes tapes and the old style cassette recorder by ONN there.

I was talking to the lady, that usually puts out the VHS tapes at the thrift store I usually haunt. She mentioned, the tapes that don't sell are the exercize and similar tapes and said, they were probably going to discard them.
I told her that I use them for testing unknown condition VCR's. I also use them for recording one hour programs like Sixty Minuites. That's a program I seldom miss! :scratch2:

A real score yesterday. An unopened TDK, 12 pack and an unopened Sony 8 pack, buck each, less my 20% seniors discount. Seem to be a little higher quality tapes. :banana:

Haven't bought VHS tapes in a while, but my last find came from the flea market. Got two 10-count boxes of sealed Sony PR-30 VHS tapes, probably from the late '80s or early '90s. $8.00 for both boxes. :)

I bought 3 sealed Fuji SVHS ST-120 double coating tapes for $5 today. I don't need them, but it is good to have more than 1 SVHS tape.

I replied that was one of RCA's real losers. They're not Laser-read, but uses a stylus, like an LP record. If there was a machine there, I probably would have bought it and the discs. :sigh:

ET - 1982 (Was this ever released on VD?? -- It must have been (The earliest VHS I can find of this is 1988 and that one was DIGITALLY RECORDED (There must be an earlier MCA VIDEOCASSETTE release (I havent found it though))))
The Goonies - 1985
The Terminator - 1984 (If its the right NTSC speed (The first VHS release is PAL (Even the NTSC one -- They messed up)))

Those are about the only ones I could possibly want from when VD was made :)

$2 a piece is nothing. Try eBay. They're more than that. I picked up a nice batch for free over the summer with several players and the last lot of discs I brought in I only paid $1 each.

Two bucks is cheap, CED at flea markets is a weird situation in my area. People usually always want crazy amounts for players and discs. I've gotten LaserDiscs and LD players for McDonald's value meal prices while the last CED player I saw at Goodwill, dirty and without a stylus, was bundled with five discs for $120. Absolute insanity.

Wow. All of that for a virtually useless technology that barely functions in the best of conditions. VHS, LD, DVD (even Beta) are all better or equal in quality and light years ahead in reliability. CED is what it always was: a conversation peice.

Exactly, it's as if everyone in my area thinks CED is some old high end esoteric format. Seen this same trend for years. Though like I said with LD (and VHS), I never see them expensive in the wild, like the same folks think that format is just trash no one wants.

I disagree. I'm not going to argue much for VHS (though I could argue for S-VHS) since it's resolution limits and noise detract from the advantages of analog.

At non-HD resolution (if you can find a good analog HD source to drag this in to the 21st century I'd like to see it) LD is usually better than DVD in terms of motion capture quality...One of the compression algorithms of DVD is to take only one frame of background then record only a certain threshold of motion as motion differences to apply to the initial frame...The compression algorithm fundamentally makes coarse motion look less natural, and discards fine motion. Compressed digital video makes live action look more cartoonish than real, add mosquito noise that compression creates, and compression artifacts (we've all seen a digital video device inject some random rectangles in our picture before) and you can really see the difference.

Uncompressed digital can be as good as analog, but that is a rare bird.

No need to get mad. It is what it is. 20 years for the DVD format is long enough in my book. I'm sick of seeing scratched up discs at thrift and pawn shops for $2 and $3. You know they wont work half the time. Same thing happened with video games. Cartridges were more reliable and handled better with children. I see so many games on the shelf now that look like they were never stored in they're cases. Bottom line: I'm always going to stand up for older, more reliable, better built items. Same reason I drive a 37 year old car. Hardly ever have to do anything to it. just try to show a love for most things and not just the digital junk that's taking over. The high definition tv thing is the biggest joke yet. Crt should have remained standard in every home.

Yes. The Gamexchange here has a polishing machine here. When I worked at a game store, we had one. Actually went through two of them. Cost was up in the 4 digit range. Quality hasn't been much of a concern lately. For example, my mother in law and my sister in law both have wen through countless cheap microwave oven from WalMart. They might last a year or two. I have one from 1978 and two vintage Amana Radaranges from around that time. Bothe are chromed out with stainless steel interior. Only thing they needed were new bulbs. These are over 30 years old and still going. I bought all 3 of these at separate times. In the event one does quit, I can use one of the others while I repair it. High quality, well built, and tough as hell. Not like the $60 and $100 junk at WalMart. I don't trust the flat screens either. Most from what I've heard are built to last the warranty. After that, the set quits and your stuck.
Most non-repairable. I have a refrigerator from 1984 that works great. I also have a black and silver refrigerator that I picked up for free. Only thing wrong was the fan blades fell off the spindle in the back of the freezer. Since then, I've already had to replace the start/run cap on the compressor. $15 part. Not bad for a 2005 model though.

No need to get mad. It is what it is. 20 years for the DVD format is long enough in my book. I'm sick of seeing scratched up discs at thrift and pawn shops for $2 and $3. You know they wont work half the time. Same thing happened with video games. Cartridges were more reliable and handled better with children. I see so many games on the shelf now that look like they were never stored in they're cases. Bottom line: I'm always going to stand up for older, more reliable, better built items. Same reason I drive a 37 year old car. Hardly ever have to do anything to it. just try to show a love for most things and not just the digital junk that's taking over. I just recently picked up from Goodwill a 1983 Amana Radarange Microwave that still works yet, all it needed was a new lightbulb, I had picked it up for my sister so she could have a microwave for her apartment she just bought, but she passed on it because she thought it was too big, so she opted for a $30 Sunbeam microwave from target (lets see that microwave last her nearly as long as this Radarange has lasted.) I never tried any of that .I just use mild dish soap and lukewarm water to wash the CD's or DVDs off.I do the same with my vinyl.I salvage some side of the road CDs DVDs doing that.

I picked up the complete collection on DVD (I know, not VHS) several years ago. I have most episodes on tape too, recorded off of our local PBS station.

Our little public TV station in Dallas, KERA-13, was responsible for introducing Monty Python to the USA in 1974. Station management then wasn't sure what the audience reaction would be.

I remembered reading what you said a few days ago and while I was out, I noticed several star trek movies including Generations and The other newer ones. I picked up a factory sealed Voyage Home and two others to complete my set that shows a pic of the enterprise when lined up together. Even tho I already have regular releases of these movies. Also found episode 27 of the original series which I needed.:thmbsp:

Just pulled in a huge haul of 115 vhs at less than a quarter a piece since my whole shopping list which included books, clothes and misc. All came to $16. I'll post pics tomorrow. A ton of b movie horror and classics. Definitely a good day.:thmbsp:

I went back today and picked up around 30 VHS, and a Voice of Music reel to reel that I'm messing around with right now. I found a copy of Star Trek 6,7, and 9 (and 2 more copies of Wrath of Kahn). So now I'm just missing 5 and 10. I need 5 to complete my set that shows the picture of the enterprise. I have some episodes of the original series and next generation on VHS, but I'm nowhere near a complete set of either. If you combined what I have on VHS, DVD, and CED, I probably have about 2/3 of the original series.

I think my picture set is complete. I'll check today. I know I have all the movies. Half of next generation. Several of original series and all of the ones they released on ced. No dvds though. I don't buy much of those. Right now I have about 80 dvds. Mostly anime, horror, and comedy.

The other day I finally got THE GOONIES (1985) recorded off analogue cable! (Cinemax - 1986)

Oh my its goregous...... On its official VHS tape its been DIGITALLY PROCESSED and doesnt look or sound as good..... Even the Japanese release is!! (I think the videodisc is the only analog release not digitally altered)

It looks thin and disgusting......... Audio crappy...... Hearing the straight analog audio from Cinemax on analogue cable is amazing!!

The pic is good also... It has depth and is just gorgeous!


I also got THE BREAKFAST CLUB (1985) recorded from HBO (26/12/86)

Audio is goregous on it also.... That movie is MONO and I dont think the official MCA tape is... It doesnt sound as good or warm @ all..... and the picture sucks.... Its flat looking and just disgusting!

Sweet haul!

This is an ancient thread, but I recently received what looks like a brand new VHS-tape of "The Big Mouth" with Jerry Lewis (1967) from Amazon, being it's not available on DVD. It doesn't just look NOS, it looks brand new. I don't know who is still making these.

I went back to that same thrift store today and saw they put out some more of those Star Treks, some next generation too. Now I'm only 9 episodes away from having all of the original series on VHS. They come from two different sets though. Some of mine are these ones in larger silver cases with 2 episodes/tape (these are the ones I just picked up), and some are in smaller black cases with 1 episode/tape.

They didn't have any more Twilight Zones, but I already had a complete set of those (all 5 seasons on VHS). The thrift stores around here don't sell VHS anymore. They claimed they weren't selling, but I always looked them over. When people bring them in, they refuse them or they just throw in the dumpster.
Those ratty K-Tel records are short versions of the hit records. They cut off the song before it's completely finished.
I never was much of a Trekie. I think I saw one complete episode.
Now, the Sopranos is my kind of series.

Pewaukee and Waukesha sometimes have a few tapes on the shelves, but most of it is DVD...VHS decks have reduced to a trickle too. Odds are most tape donations corresponded with the glut of decks that recently died down...Folks probably dumped their decks and tapes at the same time and now that most folks don't have tape or decks anymore most have vanished.

I've been doing well at this one store, I went back today, and no more tapes, but I picked up a working Beta VCR.

It's a Sony SuperBeta (but not the stereo model) missing the control door, only paid 2 bucks for it. Right now it's only one of only two Beta VCRs I have working, out of 7 total. My VHS average is better: 10/14 working. CED players 2/3, TVs 28/39.

A top-loader Panasonic VCR from 1984...that seems to have a belt problem. Worst part is, I can't find the manual for it without paying 22 dollars!

Ended up buying another 80s VCR that doesn't work, a RCA VMT385 (which is Hitachi internally). The Panasonic had a mode switch issue but this RCA must have a broken belt as it doesn't pull the tape out of the cartridge.

I buy about 50 VHS tapes on average a week (sell 1,000-1,200 a year online on Ebay and Amazon donate back others). Of course these include home recorded stuff as well as commercial releases.

Some stuff of note I found recently:

-48 Hours and Local Hero recorded off The Movie Channel around 1985 or so, even came with an original Scotch hard shell VHS protective case
-3:15, one of my favorite 1980s gang movies (original 1986 Media release, never released on DVD or Bluray)
-Scanners (later MGM release)
-Tons of other thrillers and erotic thrillers, many of which were never released on DVD/Bluray

I really like collecting the older home recorded stuff, the oldest I found recently was from 1981 (NFL game Broncos-Chargers) and found a huge lot of boxing and home recorded made for TV movies from 1979-1985, and all played great no joke! I swear the older blank tapes were built better than the crap that was made post 1990. I used to buy the TDK T160s in bulk in the early 2000s and my Panasonic deck would eat alot of them, but not the older stuff.

Older decks can eat newer tape and older tape can eat newer decks....

It was in a bin of home made VHS tapes @ salvation army (THEY WERE NOT GONNA BE PUT UP AS THEY WERE NOT THE OFFICAL TAPES OF MOVIES (People recorded them from cable TV))

This tape was recorded 4/1/87 off analog cable (HBO) and is beautiful...... I have had the 3 parts of back to the future on their official tapes for awhile but all 3 are DIGITALLY RECORDED and look like crap to me...... I finally got BTTF II and III on thier official MCA VHS tapes in reg video also :) (Looks like your watching on analogue cable (But the audio is much warmer of course (video is somewhat nicer also (colours))))

These 2 I got are RENTAL TAPES and I can only imagine they didnt ruin RENTALS was because they wanted to fool people into seeing how beautiful it is and then they go out and buy it and got something not as good..... (A $$$$ scheme)

Does yours have the 400 or the 460? The 460 is a lot easier to soup up, even 90s era 460 truck parts would give you more power than a smogged-up late 70s 460.

It's a 460. I've considered converting it to the fuel injection the last 460 trucks had, and may do that.
Right now it doesn't run great and the carb can't carry a tune in a basket thanks to exhaust and vacuum leaks (it uses vacuum for WAY too much).

The plan is to replumb all the vacuum lines, get new exhaust without cats (there's no emissions tests on cars that predate OBD2 ports here) tune the carb and if I'm not happy start modifying it. That does somewhat depend on funds and employment status come spring/summer.

I still use my VCR today.timeshifting .Dont trust the digital stuff..Tapes are still avail online..Just know how the look for them..

Awesome. I still watch more movies on tape than anything else. Over the last 10 years, I've managed to complete many sets including star trek, the terminator movies, jurassic park movies, back to the future, rocky, james bond, and a few others including a few rare movies. My last Goodwill run recently got me a few more

Today I got an earlier release of GLORIA than I had and I love it!!

The first one I had was a 1981 release but it was AFTER they changed how they put movies on VHS tapes.....

This earlier one I just got was still the orginal way... Everything on center mix and the video was much better!! (The credits @ the end were perfectly clear while the newer 1981 copy I had the credits were blurry and not very readable!)

Audio is beautiful on this copy and the vid is also!!!!!!

Sweet haul. I am still running VHS roughly 25% of the time at home. Have many worthwhile machines that of course need regular use to stay healthy. My favorite daily player at this point is the Toshiba M-5900. I use it
in my B-T home transmitter rig.

This is a mid eighties 4 head hifi stereo that is built the way they all ought to be. Just have to watch for the display going weak over the years, and the high heat regulator+associated caps which get toasty.

My latest videotape purchase was a sealed original Alien

The HR-6700U was acquired from the original owner with original box (with styrofoam), remote (with blue plastic still on it), instruction manual, both quick reference cards, and a service manual ! This vcr was on my wish list for quite a while and to have a complete one like this is just awesome. Of course it’s full of bad belts, and the drum seems stiff to turn, I hope it can be freed up somehow. Cosmetically, it is in excellent shape, and very clean. I’m going to restore this one best I can.
This was JVC’s first EP capable VHS vcr (would play LP tapes), and the last of their “first generation”, mechanical “piano key” VHS machines. It was JVC’s top of the line VHS vcr from late 1979 to about 1981. It cost around $1300 Cdn. back then.

Regarding the blank VHS tapes: I was looking through my blanks to discover that I have a number of them on hand. I bought a number of them at thrifts, when they still handled them.
I'm using them to record the court proceedings going on in Wisconsin. :sigh:

I have so many movies recorded on VHS (which I still watch) it would take a long time to digitize. Whenever I was in a Good Will store, I would buy only low mileage VHS machines for five dollars each. I do not see any VHS decks anymore. I have 6-8 spare units to ensure I will always have something to play these tapes on. When a deck goes down, I will fix the minor issues and toss the ones with serious issues. After 35 years in the business, I don't have the time or patience to fix these anymore.

The Who Tour video is copyrighted 1983 Profile Publishing/1984 CBS/FOX Video so is not digital anything, thankfully. “VHS hifi/ mono compatible”

Batteries not included....The movie that made little me want a Wurlitzer 1100.

I had bought a few years back (so this is not a recent acquisition) a VHS Copy of the last release of the original Star Wars Movies before they were remastered (the ones that showed Jaba as being a man in a suit, and that showed who actually shot first in the bar fight scene) which this was from 1995, because 1997 was when they "remastered" the whole video (when they "digitized" Jaba and "edited" the Bar Fight scene.)

While the audio was "Digitally Remastered" (Using their trademark THX Technology) the video is still the original video from 1977-1983 when the original Star Wars Movies came out.

I was shocked when I found it at the Goodwill because after this video set was released they destroyed all of the original video footage after they "remastered" and "digitized" it so basically because of that any major Star Wars fan would be hard pressed to give up their copy of the original unedited version of the original Star Wars movies because basically that's something that you're never going to find ever again, even on DVD or Blu-Ray.

You'd probably like this Woodstock 40th anniversary Director's Cut Blu-ray but it's (heaven forbid!) DIGITAL! So maybe not. The extra performances and extras discs are well worth it. I bought a copy a few months ago.

After years of searching, I found the original series of Star Trek on VHS.
Not 30 minutes later, I found the series on DVD. I bought both.

VHS sixteen tapes, DVD, eight discs.
For some reason, the original series was never available here, while the later variants of star Trek were.

Also, twenty-two years after its release, I found the box set of
Long Way to the top.

I wonder if those Star Trek tapes were made by running the 24 fps film at 25 fps, which was often the technique used in 50 Hz countries. The first time I heard a Star Trek episode in Switzerland, it sounded to me like Kirk was regressing back toward puberty.

Running 24 fps film at 30 Hz would change the pitch and timbre unacceptably. So, 3:2 pulldown was used.

If you cannot see the effects of 3:2 pulldown, don't try to. Once seen, it cannot be unseen.

If you mean 3:2 pulldown, it was done for conversion of 24 frame per second film to 60 field per second video. Every NTSC VHS tape has it. Again, if you didn't realize it or understand what the visual effects are, don't try to see them unless you are more interested in technology than in enjoying the movies. You will never be able to unsee it.

This is reminding me of a thread a few years ago in which someone more or less explained 3:2 pull down to dude explaining that it's basically the only way to convert film frame rate to NTSC frame rate without changing audio speed an unacceptable amount, and he basically didn't understand any of it and replied something to the effect of "that's stupid. Why don't they do it some other way?" As if there's some magical analog solution to frame rate conversion other than 3:2 pulldown, running the film at the wrong speed or trying to run the TVs vertical deflection at the wrong speed (which never would have happened in the consumer space in the analog era due to broadcast regulations).
Between that and a old post of dude's where he claimed all digital sound and picture conveyances have mind control built in I've been long convinced dude is a gullible moron who has no understanding or aptitude regarding how electronics work.
Basically he's videokarmas equivalent of a grandma with no technical knowledge showing up to a grandchild's programming competition and cheering and booing random people on and complaining about the good rules of the competition without actually understanding anything that is going on...

It is a fascinating format. The D-THEATER machines have component HD output too.
I haven't encountered anything ignoring D-THEATER decks and computers that can convert firewire to anything the average HDTV can play. I've heard a few FireWire TVs were made, but I've never seen one in person.

The typical way to use these was with the Panasonic or Samsung tuners with the
IEEE1394 connectors, and maybe another model or two. I may chase those down later, or try a computer as you mentioned.

IIRC there were play back issues using my JVC to play back through the Panasonic ATSC tuner via FireWire. I've heard the interface was slightly different between brands. If possible a tuner the same brand as the deck is advisable.

I've got 3 of the Project A-ko Videos on VHS that I picked up at Goodwill at one point in time, I unfortunately made the mistake of using one of those tapes as a test tape for working on an old VCR that I thought I had fixed and wound up ruining part of the tape when the VCR in question ate the tape. :sigh: :tears:

I went to one of the last electronic-supply stores here in the San Francisco Bay Area last weekend, and they had a few blank Super VHS tapes in stock, so I bought two of them just in case I want to play with VCRs again any time soon.

They also had two BCT-30MA Betacam SP blank tapes that will work in my ED Beta VCR, so I bought those too.

I've got the same Macross video tape you're talking about, except I've only got one of the 3 tapes from that set. I've also got Bubblegum Crisis on VHS (the whole series) that a friend of mine gave me years ago when I was first getting into anime. :thmbsp:

I didnt know Firewall was put on VHS as most stuff stopped in 2005.... But thats only in the USA I guess...... The ebay auction said VHS stuff was pretty strong in S. Korea until about 2010............ And amazingly most of thier stuff is NTSC!!

That opens up alot of possiblities like getting Saw 3 - 6 on VHS!! (I have 1 and 2) (Maybe 7 also)

Its gonna have Korean subtitles but man the video and audio should be much better than it is on my Digital cable copy I have!! (I do not like it at all)
