View Full Version : Mystery tv needs help!
captainmoody 03-15-2010, 09:34 AM Chris dropped off the AMC set Saturday, so I had that and the maggie to work on during the rainy weekend. It will need a flyback, but I got it going half arsed by removing the charred rubber "tire" from around it, and then using some silicone for insulation.
This won't last, but at least I could see the set produce a picture!
As far as locating a transformer, I tried moyers, Bursma, and another company in Florida with no success. (the Wells-Gardner part #53X0 440 001 the Thordarson part #Fly 333) Does anyone know of any other companies that might have this?
drh4683 03-15-2010, 09:56 AM Try Chesters Electronics in kenosha, WI. This is the place that Mark goes to with good success on vintage parts. Perhaps they have a FLY-333. I have a few different thordarson flys but I know I don't have that one.
captainmoody 03-15-2010, 11:12 AM Thanks Doug! That worked great! They shipped it today, and it was only $20!
zenithfan1 03-15-2010, 11:31 AM Wow, they even had one of those??? Cool, glad you found one. I love Chesters.....:)
captainmoody 03-15-2010, 12:23 PM I thought there could'nt be any way that this was available still. Well, I was wrong! Going to Chester Electronics must be like stepping back in time. The price I paid for that flyback seems to be what I was paying for them in the late 70's!
I like that!
zenithfan1 03-15-2010, 01:58 PM Yes, it's a time warp in there. I'll say it again......I love Chesters!:)
I picked up my new '77 Sansui SR-636 TT in there, still in the box with a Shure V15 type IV cart  and also a really nice Sansui 1000a:thmbsp:
captainmoody 03-15-2010, 06:41 PM Oh, thought I'd show a pic of it working with the rigged flyback. It's actually running cool and not arcing. Oh well, I will change it out anyway when the new one arrives just to be safe.
radiotvnut 03-15-2010, 06:43 PM That set looks like it has a nice picture!
Carmine 03-15-2010, 06:53 PM Dwight, thanks for posting those pictures! I'm so glad to see it working...
Were there bad caps that killed the flyback, or did it just need the insulator "renewed"?
I'm glad i was able to save it, wouldn't surprise me if that was the last one.
Carmine 03-15-2010, 06:54 PM I also noticed you replaced the dead indicator lamp. Post some pictures of your "clean up" when you get the chance. :thmbsp:
captainmoody 03-15-2010, 10:01 PM Ok, will do.

captainmoody 03-16-2010, 04:09 PM Ok Chris, here is a picture of the AMC cleaned up!
Sandy G 03-16-2010, 04:24 PM Never ceases to amaze me the talent, technical ability, & skills that are represented on this board...A "Wannabe" like me can only shake his head...
zenithfan1 03-16-2010, 04:54 PM Wow, that thing really cleaned up nice. I like the style of it too, it don't have that "cheap" look that most economy sets had.
Robert Grant 03-16-2010, 09:04 PM Nice to see this topic of "tire" "blowouts" on flybacks with black rubber coatings.
I have not one, but two late 1950's black-and-whites with this deterioration in the coating on the flyback.
Both seem to produce full HV, with no arcing nor funny noises.
The first is my Motorola 21T34BA, it has a nice white raster with sharp video lines (this is the one with no picture and no sound since the AGC bus goes to -45V the instant the sweep starts up). The "tire" on this one seems to droop at the bottom as if it slowly melted (which, with several years in an attic with a black roof, it may have).
The other is my more recently acquired Zenith B2225, where some of the tire seems to have disappeared. I know this has good HV because it has a fairly good picture (it has a few bad connections and nearly every low-power tube tests just under the yellow "?" zone on my Heath TC-3, some of the tubes are original!).
Is it safe to operate a set with an imperfect "tire"?
How would I repair such a problem?
I might note that my Emerson from the same era never had a "tire", it is covered with a translucent substance resembling wax, and looks like new.
captainmoody 03-17-2010, 03:38 PM The flyback arrived today from Chester Electronics so I thought i'd share some pics of the replacement. Everything went well with the install, had to wire the new fly a bit different, as (per directions) it was a direct replacement for one model and a "near fit" for mine. Also had to scrape a good bit of burnt wax from the bottom of the hv cage. The primary winding was pretty crisp on the original fly, and even though it still worked, am glad it got replaced! Checked the cathode current, replaced a weak 6GH8 color osc. and done. So now the set is fine for everyday use, (watching TV land shows!) and that's all I'm going to do with it for now!
radiotvnut 03-17-2010, 04:03 PM Nice! Does that set use a Rauland/Zenith or RCA CRT? All of the '70's era WG built sets that I've seen had a Rauland CRT and they produced a nice picture.
captainmoody 03-17-2010, 04:41 PM It has an RCA tube.
Carmine 03-17-2010, 04:58 PM I have enjoyed your chronicle of repairs Dwight. Thanks for posted the pics and allowing me to live vicariously through your efforts. I never would have had the time to fix it! :thmbsp:
zenithfan1 03-17-2010, 07:01 PM Nice Job!:thmbsp:
AUdubon5425 03-18-2010, 12:28 AM Ditto
drh4683 03-20-2010, 07:23 PM Looks great, very nice work. It always feels good to replace a bad fly with a nice new thordarson!
