DaveWM 09-25-2009, 03:21 PM looks nice again on the wrong coast
I am determined to get a nice mid 60's color set. Is that a hybrid?
freakaftr8 09-25-2009, 03:29 PM No sir. Mine is all tube to the best of my knowledge minus the nuvistor in the tuner.
(which is technicallly a tube)
damen 09-25-2009, 04:05 PM That is a nice one... I wish I had more space for a tv that big but it is just a little to far for me.
radiotvnut 09-25-2009, 04:34 PM I'm sure the stereo is SS.
freakaftr8 09-25-2009, 04:49 PM Yes the stereo is 100% solid state. Sorry.. They usually put out decent sound too. Amp is a little underpowered as the bass drowns out and turns into midrange at 40% volume.
DaveWM 09-25-2009, 06:46 PM yea I figured the amp was SS, I was wondering about the TV chassis.
I noticed the drop off on my astrosonic vs my PP 6bq5 version. Still decent, as I really cant take it too loud anyway. The other thing is the astro has 12" vs the tube using 15" which I am sure accounts for a big difference.
I may have located a magnavox color set not too far, but looks even newer on the amp, my guess would be early 70's, but it is a hideous painted white look, I really really hate that look, much prefer the classis dark brown finish.
man I tell you the 70's really had some funky looks going on. remember door ways with beads (I know it was a 60's thing but that was underground, by the time the of the 70's it was mainstream
DaveWM 09-25-2009, 06:50 PM http://daytona.craigslist.org/clt/1365697741.html
this is it, was hoping for an all tube tv chassis, what do you think?
radiotvnut 09-25-2009, 10:05 PM From the looks of the turntable and control panel, I'd say that Magnavox is no older than the early '70's. The TV chassis could go three ways - all tube, hybrid, or solid state - as this was the transition period. I'm going to lean towards it having a hybrid chassis.
zenithfan1 09-26-2009, 09:30 AM That Maggie looks like a '68/9 to me. I could be wrong but I used to have one similar..... It would be worth checking out IMO.
kx250rider 09-26-2009, 11:04 AM On the RCA; Shawn's right; all tube TV. It does have a Nuvistor, but that's actually a tube. It's just a subminiature RF amp tube in a full metal jacket. It may also be a CTC-25, which used the same bezel on some early models. Can't tell...
On the Magnavox, that's a mid-late 60s model due to the channel windows below the screen. Probably '68-'69, based on the 23" tube and the squared-off channel knob (as opposed to the old banana-shaped, pointed one).
Charles
Edit: I took a second look at the picture of the RCA, and I see the channel knob is the old pot metal one. That confirms it's a 17, assuming the knob's original.
old_coot88 09-26-2009, 11:11 AM ... I am determined to get a nice mid 60's color set. Is that a hybrid?
The '17 was based on the CTC-16 (same 'long' chassis, same tube lineup) but upgraded to drive the new 25" rectangular small-neck CRT. The '17 was a very short production run in transition to the mainstay CTC-25. As for the '17 being 'hybrid', it did use one small-signal transistor in the sync/blanking takeoff area, right after the vid.detector. The transistor disappeared in the '25.
To the OP: are you sure the set pictured is a '17 and not a '25? I don't remember the '17 being available in a combo, though it might have been.
Bill(oc)
freakaftr8 09-26-2009, 11:42 AM Yes they did offer the CTC-17 un a combo unit. I have one.
I understand that they are rarer than some too..
bgadow 09-26-2009, 09:30 PM I recently found a gutted -17 combo, and I know another member on here did as well. So, they are tha that much more rare now.
freakaftr8 10-02-2009, 12:36 AM Hey guys!
Well I picked this beast up yesterday and got around to checking it out tonight. I unloaded it in the garage. Well it is a CTC17 XAD chassis. Identical to my CTC17 XAB set. Powered up with HOT pulled for a while, caps stayed cool.. Plugged in HOT...
Nothing.. Got sound and no raster.. So.. I pulled HOT, 6BK4 shunt, 3A3 HV rect and 6DW4 damper.
Ready for this?? Every tube was dead!! I mean DeAd!! No reading (well the HOT had 1/4 in the bad).. Wow! I have never in my days collecting and restoring had a set with all bad HV tubes before..
Anyway I went through my stash and replaced all with new. Powered back up again and got this..
Im tested the CRT, all guns are working halfway, most likely needs to cook on 8v and thats what im doing to it now. The CRT is a replacement RCA Colorama from 1970. The green raster is most likely bad demod tubes..

ctc17 10-02-2009, 08:26 AM gkad you got it. mine has a great picture and the sound bumps. the cabinet is kinda botched. someone cut off the legs and in general abused it complete with cigarette burns. i got it off the curb so i cant complain.
had to replace the colorburst crystal and the filter in the amp.
be sure to adjust the cathode current. i have the instructions if u need theme
freakaftr8 10-02-2009, 09:57 AM Oh yeah I'm all over that cathode current. My other 17 runs a a nice 109 ma. Kinda low but I won't complain. I Cooked the CRT on 8v last night with my sencore and looks like the guns came up and holds in the green now. Still got a green raster and I swapped the demods. Yay a challenge! Lord knows I don't have enough of them already. Lol
freakaftr8 10-10-2009, 12:24 AM Well this is interesting, the focus was coming in and out rapidly and I checked for corrosion at the focus pin on the CRT.. Fixed that one but with the screen all green, I can turn down the green drive and max red and blue and get a sepia raster. I get 207v at green to CRT from the G amp. B and R amp (integrated in one circuit v20 tube) I get 20v should be 195v. If I pull the B/R Amp tube I get voltages restored and a nice greyscale raster! All tubes test good and no shorts. I went through and canned the bad tubes earlier. At pin 1 and 6 I get 240v (no load) on the B/R amp. Under load is 77v which should be 195v. Looking upstream and I do have a sams that my nose has been in all night.. But im kinda tired and think I might tackle the chassis this weekend.
Hope everyone is doing well, it's really nice to know such a friendly knowladgeable bunch and all you guys make this a great site! Im glad I know you guys
joemama99 10-10-2009, 08:49 PM You guys on the coasts run into the coolest stuff!Where I am at,all the retirees left their old sets up north and bought new when they came here.Nice find, shawn.
freakaftr8 10-16-2009, 11:59 PM Still having a heck of a time chasing down this chassis gremlin. The blue and red amp when the tube is pulled restores the raster to a good greyscale with proper voltages to the CRT.. With the tube in, the raster goes bright green, no blue or red and hardly any output voltage to the blue and red drive to pin 3 and 12 of the CRT. Pin 7 for green gets 175v like it should but Blue and Red reduced to 20v. Almost as something is shorting with the 6GU7 installed. The Green amp 6GU7 has no change installed or not. Tubes test good with no shorts and I tried swapping them already. Any ideas?
Thanks guys
FredWesner 10-17-2009, 01:40 PM Green screen, no control. Was a common problem on 16s and 17s. On the chroma board look for a wire on top of the PC board running near the 6GU7s. This wire will oxidize and break resulting in the severe green screen syndrome. We jumpered this wire under the PC board on any chassis that came in. Also resolder all of the PC board ground mounting stakes, intermittent stakes were also a common problem.
Hope this helps.
Fred
sampson159 10-18-2009, 11:03 AM he is right.there are actually two wires that oxidize and cause chroma issues.replace both.i have a 16 chassis that had the same issue and someone had replaced both wires but soldered to wrong circuit in chassis.bryan sent me a sams on this set and i easily traced it down and repaired.the first 3 days i about went insane trying to find the problem.good luck!
freakaftr8 10-18-2009, 07:53 PM Swee guys I'll check into this and repost! Thanks again!
Shawn
freakaftr8 10-20-2009, 01:43 AM Well you guys were dead on with the corroded wire! It was barely making a connection, I totally missed that one. Well I seem to barely have a blue drive. The CRT tests good on all 3 guns. Off the Blue amp max is 70v where should be 177v.
Thanks guys, at least I have somewhere to start now.
I really want to get this puppy up and running, im going to make it my bedroom set.
freakaftr8 10-24-2009, 12:24 AM Hey what do you guys suppose would cause a reduction in blue drive voltage to the CRT? If i pull the B/Y 6GU7, I have good blue drive voltage..
Thanks!
