I spotted this up the block.....should I save it? It's kind of beat up and weighs a ton. It says "$ervice-$aver' chassis and has the green halo.

Yes, always worth it! Even if it turns out to just be a donor. That was the best built TV around when it was new, one of the best built ever.

Guys, it's sitting here right now :thmbsp: What was I thinking, to not grab it?!

It's a 25CC50 ! I'm guessing it's from the early 70s or so.

Here's the story. The set was down the block from my house in the trash. Tomorrow morning is trash collection here... The house was just sold and there was a lot of crap on the curb. The cabinet is in okay shape overall, I'll need to paint the speaker grille, no biggie.

I took it home, didn't even wait for it to warm up and it fired up with a color picture in my basement, with no antenna. Oh yeah, it's a Zenith lol.

What really struck me is the fact that it's still got the original CRT and most of the tubes look original too.

Next move is to clean the thing up, which means all tube sockets and controls, then fix one leg which is wobbly :D

I can't believe this works as found...only has a slightly short vertical, so maybe just as a precaution I'll find some new filter caps for it.

I'd post a pic but I can't right now...

CRT is a 25VAMP22....What were they making these tubes out of?! In service mode, all 3 guns are bright as anything still.....Gonna have to spend some time converging it though.

That set is from around '71 or '72. Those were good TV's and will probably last another 35+ years when it's bugs are worked out. You'll be interested to know that those '70's Zenith CRT's hold up very well. It's rare to find a chromacolor tube from that era that's bad.

Cool, good to know. Thanks radiotvnut. I'm sure you and a lot of other members on here have worked on these before. This is my first CC50 Zenith. :thmbsp:

Used to see a lot of tube type Zenith color TV's back in the '90's. I don't think I've had a tube Zenith console since about 2000.

A lot of them are still in service in the wealthier retirement areas of Los Angeles. Great sets, and they rarely need work. Not too many of the tube type Zeniths, but a few. A lot of early solid state ones around elsewhere, including mine.

I was poking around in the set today and cleaned everything out, etc set greyscale and focus and was actually enjoying watching it, then it suddenly lost all luminance. Turning up the G2's all the way revealed a barely visible raster. What a bummer. I checked the HV, the sub bright pot, and all the other things I could think of. No idea what happened....there was no smoke, smells, or snapping. Weird...

Thanks for the tip andy! There are 4 socketed transistors which I'll pull and check.

zenith2134

Well there were more like 7 socketed ones and cleaning em all out didn't help.... Damn, I need a print for this set. Maybe the local library has one.

This set dates from 1969-1970. Made back when the old Zenith motto held true "The Quality Goes In Before The Name Goes On". One of the best, most reliable TV sets skilled, well paid labor could give you.

As i recall, these sets were the some of the last to use all made-in-USA parts.

It really is a well built and nicely laid out set. Can't wait to see what it could REALLY do.:thmbsp:

The library doesn't have any Sams anymore :thumbsdn:

What gives?

I spent about a half hour reflowing joints in the chassis and tried just about everything I know, to no avail. It's a shame since the set works 100 percent perfectly except no luma.

Unfortunately, I may have to unload the set, since my knowledge of tubed-chassis TV's ends here. :scratch2:

The last ALL American Zenith was in 1968, after that the outsourcing slowly began with small parts like the purity ring assemblies and so on. This however, is a very reliable set worth fixing. Even with the foreign parts the Zenith sets were good to about 1980 IMO. Post some pics Tom!!!!

Man, where's Doug been?? These are his specialty. Don't give up yet, it's most likely something very simple as it worked fine before. Come back and give it another try in a day or so. Frustration will hide a problem that's in your face with a blinking light and sign.

Tom, is there a way you can check those transistors? What part of the set are they in? video? IF? Luma? One may be bad. I was told this a while back but don't remember all the details.

Hey Mark thanks for the response. :tresbon:

I can't post any pics here anymore, since I'm on probation for a minor offense...Hopefully the moderators will let me gain back this privilege soon...:scratch2:

For good measure I pulled all the pin-type wire connections and scrubbed up down with high grade isopropyl. And from what I saw briefly, this set does make quite a good pic. If I get it running again it'll be my daily watcher.

zenith2134

Yes I did check the transistors they appear to be used in the color amp circuit and maybe the IF.

I was surprised to find this one. Haven't found a set this old on the curb in more than 2 years.

Just quick update, which might mean nothing. There are 2 Belfuses in the set right near the power Tx. One orange, one green. When I pull the green one the raster goes totally white with retrace. No idea what this means....

Hello all, Im still here! I havn't been here in a while.

Tom, glad you were able to save this TV. the 25CC50 is the last "tube" chassis before it was dropped and zenith just kept making the 4 tube hybrids for a couple more years.
I assume you can get a bright set up line with the switch in setup mode?
You mentioned that you checked the transistors, but I know it was discussed that you tried moving them in their sockets. Just want to be sure if you actually tested them? There are 7 easy accessable transistors like you mentioned. Those video amp transistors are suspect. Even the verticle blanker transistor can cause a dark raster if its faulty.
FYI, there are 3 more transistors in there, which are under that white plastic retainter clip. Those are the Video outputs, which have heatsinks around them. Doubt those are the issue though. If one of those fails, then you just loose the corresponding color.

This really sounds like transistor fault here. If you can't test them, try a zap of freeze spray on those transistors, one a time to see if it brings the raster back.

Glad to see you around Doug! Thanks for helping Tom! Also, thanks for jogging my memory, I remember you telling me about those transistors, but that was a while ago.

Okay here it goes. I pulled the tube compliment chart out of the set for reference.

121-447 : Noise amp
121-745 x2 : 1st Video Amp and Brightness Limiter
121-744 : 2nd Video
121-499 : AGC
121-587 : Blanker
121-746 : 3rd Video

Now, the 3 video outputs transistors are labeled 121-828 on the chart but are actually 121-743's.

Even though I tested em all earlier, I sprayed em all just now one at a time and it didn't clear up the issue. I don't know, one moment it was plenty bright then suddenly went out. I still think it's a bad connection somewhere.

I know those solder cones can be trouble, where they are used as ground connections at the ends of the strip. Lots of times they can have a hairline crack where its soldered to the metal lug on the chassis. They can be a real troublemaker. In fact, one of the guys I know who sold zeniths new back in the 60's+70's told me that lots of times they'd have to resolder those ground lugs as they would crack in shipping, or they'd get customer complaints of strange symptoms. Only to find out it was a cracked solder cone connection. Can you try pressing down on the chassis in various parts with the set on, if you have an intermittent condition, the flexing of the chassis might help you pinpoint where the trouble is.

zenith2134
03-17-2009, 09:18 PM
Doug, thanks for your assistance. While I didn't reflow all of those cone type connections, I did most of it. And I tried flexing/lightly banging on various parts of the chassis. Weird problems like this are the worst. :thumbsdn:

Couple of other things to note...

To answer your question from before, Doug- In service mode all is okay and I can get a perfect white line. I also cleaned out the service switch of course.

When tuning in a channel, the snow is as bright as can be, and as soon as it locks into a channel it goes contrasty and color stays normal but luma disappears. This made me think that the tuner was at fault but it seems fine and I subbed the two tubes just in case.

Also, what does the white screen w/ retrace mean when i pull the 350mA belfuse? Getting frustrated lol.

Not familiar with this chassis, but snow = bright, signal = dark sounds like AGC trouble to me.

AGC problem maybe? Is there an AGC control and what is it's effect on the picture. You might replace the AGC transistor as well.

Hey Tom, how's it going? find anything yet??

zenith2134
03-20-2009, 12:08 AM
Hey Mark I was going to take a look at the set today but didn't get a chance. Thanks Bill R and old_tv_nut for the tips on the AGC circuit...

The control itself appears to be working normally so I no longer feel that it's the cause of my problem, but just to be sure I'm going to track down a few of these transistors and swap em out for the hell of it...

Meanwhile took out the seperate colorboard with the color IC on it and cleaned/checked all those pins and connectors again just in case.

I gotta be honest with you guys here: Most of my experience with TV's is limited to all-SS designs since I literally wasn't around for the heyday of tubes. Tube, Audio OTOH is a little different to me because it was my primary focus in the electronics field "since I've been in the game".

Having said that, I am too a bearer of the great Zenith name at Audiokarma and will continue to learn and study these sets til I know them like the back of my hand since, like others have noted, these were some of the most reliable and well built color sets ever built.

Tom,

Id like to be able to help you get this TV going. However, due to some policy with AK, I can no longer upload pictures. That being said, I'd like to take this discussion to a different location. Visit my youtube page at drh4683, send me a message over there and we'll get your 25CC50 up and going again.
