Let's hear it for Clint.
"Get off my lawn!"
If any line had the potential for another "Go ahead, make my day." moment I'd say it is this one.
:thmbsp:

soundmotor 11-07-2008, 06:39 AM The trailer looks good!
One of my top 3 'forgotten' musclecars too.
Clmrt 11-07-2008, 06:42 AM ooooo
me like
I hope they don't fuck up the GT.
4Channel 12-03-2008, 12:11 AM I'll see it - if Clint Eastwood read the phone book, I'd probably watch! I went to Cordoba, Spain just to see where the spaghetti westerns were filmed.
Get a hold of the June Hot Rod - a comparo between old and new school ways of hot rodding....A Gran Torino with a 514ci engine making 600hp...with chassis and suspension mods to match.
donoghue 12-03-2008, 10:07 AM I had to stop it at the 2 minute mark. Why do trailers have to show you the whole damn movie nowadays? Anyway it looks good. Is he directing?
pioneervato 12-03-2008, 01:02 PM This one is on my short list to go see. His character is like a mix between "Dirty" Harry and "Gunny" from Heartbreak Ridge. He still looks good for his age and still knows how to make a good movie or two.
75Center 12-03-2008, 02:06 PM Looks very good. He is a class act.

That pretty much sums it up for me. I met Eastwood when I was a little kid in the 60's. Needless to say, he made an impression.
prisoners 12-07-2008, 07:59 PM I'll be sure to see it. The trailer for Terminator 4 looks good too. The new Star Trek...? ehhhh...I hope it's good, but I dunno.....
Sovereign 12-07-2008, 08:09 PM Looks great! Thanks for the link!
Charles 12-13-2008, 02:43 PM No doubt Clint Eastwood has been in a few dogs. I always figured that after he made "The Gauntlet" he had to walk up backwards to collect his paycheck.
His latest works have all been pretty good. "Million Dollar Baby" may of been his best work of all time. He knows how to make a movie, unlike the majority of the film makers out in Hollywood. Most of them wouldn't know a decent movie if one crawled up and bit them on the ass.
Just my less than humble opinion,
Chas
hypertone 12-21-2008, 11:24 AM Just watched this last night. It's pretty good. The story is great, and Clint Eastwood is a riot as a jaded, growling old man. I think the "Tau" character could have been better (the acting was weak), but it was still an enjoyable movie.
"i finish things. that's what i do".:thmbsp:
diddlybopper 12-21-2008, 01:06 PM I personally feel it's the best thing he's ever done !! Oscar for him and the movie, that's right you heard it hear first.Filmed in Detroit and I can relate to the character he plays. This is a do not miss movie....
I was always a Chevy man....
grumpy 12-21-2008, 04:28 PM Can't wait to see it.
Sandy G 12-21-2008, 04:40 PM Me, either. An older guy stickin' it to punks appeals to me more & more every day, for some reason..
RussinOhio 12-21-2008, 08:01 PM I'm looking forward to seeing this myself! I just love the title.

DENNYDOG 12-21-2008, 09:57 PM Great! I didn't realize it was out already.
Maxamillion 12-22-2008, 08:38 AM Definitely a must see, but I don't think it can top "Unforgiven", one of the greatest movies ever made.
Gene Hackman: You just shot an unarmed man!
Clint Eastwood: If you're gonna decorate your place with my friend, you better be armed!
soundmotor 12-22-2008, 08:46 AM The man is a national treasure. Thanks for reminding me to see this one, soundmotor.
You are welcome but I am sure you would've found out.
Might get to it this week if there is time.
Noborigama 12-22-2008, 08:46 AM Oh this is one the father in law and I will be seeing, no one does badass like Clint, no one.
jimfet 12-22-2008, 07:21 PM I can't think of the name. But it seems like it's gonna be like that old Charles Bronson movie where he goes and cleanes up a neigborhood
fotno 12-22-2008, 07:53 PM Word of warning guys: I have it on good authority from a friend lucky enough to see preview showings of Gran Torino: that it is emphatically not a Dirty Harry or Death Wish kind of film. He enjoyed it immensely, and I trust his taste when it comes to films; but he used the word "surprised" and "unexpected" in reference to the themes, content, and plot of this one. He mentioned that one of his fellow movie-goers left in a huff, because he'd come looking for Unforgiven and didn't get it...
onepixel 12-23-2008, 12:05 AM I've been trying to see this movie since it's limited release. It's now showing "expanded" whatever that means. But it's still not in any theaters anywhere near me and there are a lot of theaters around here.

The Ebert review seems to sum up for me pretty well what kind of film I thought it was from viewing the trailer.
But it doesn't appear I'll be seeing it anytime soon as it is only playing in one theater, in Boston, and nowhere in the 'burbs.
:thmbsp:
That move should be titled "Designed to Fail".
fotno 12-23-2008, 08:00 AM I know what you mean Soundmotor.
When No Country For Old Men was in wide release (supposedly) in theaters, I really wanted to see it. I had to wait for the DVD release though, as the closest theater showing it, was an hour's drive away. I simply can't see the logic in offering up a major film in only one theater, especially in a market as large as Boston.
I can't think of the name. But it seems like it's gonna be like that old Charles Bronson movie where he goes and cleanes up a neigborhood
Death Wish I & II are pretty good.

Oh, I dunno; I thought it was pretty much of a deliberate sendup of action flicks. The scene where the cops literally shoot a house to pieces while the hero and heroine escape undetected is classic Keystone Kops stuff. Not to say I'd pay money to see it again, but it was more 'shaggy dog' than 'dog'.
RussinOhio 12-26-2008, 03:11 AM No doubt Clint Eastwood has been in a few dogs. I always figured that after he made "The Gauntlet" he had to walk up backwards to collect his paycheck.
True, Clint has released a few "turkeys" in his time.....but we tend to forgive because he is "Clint", after all:D
...besides, his good stuff far outweighs the not-so-good stuff:thmbsp:
Russ
RussinOhio 12-28-2008, 10:29 AM Some of you Clint fans might not be aware of how the hollywood trade papers sometime around '69 "jumped-the-gun"....so to speak....by rushing to conclusion that 'ol blue eyes Mr. Sinatra was gonna play "Dirty Harry". Sinatra backed out of the role....AFTER advertisments were already made! Here is one of those rarely seen ads. I think it'd be a completely different movie with Sinatra.

"Get off my lawn!"
Man, I LOL'd when I saw that in the preview, while he's sighting down the barrel of his shotgun. I love Clint in this new role as... a cowboy? I guess it's the only role he's ever known... ;) ;)
Looks like a great flick and it's on my shortlist of movies to go see-- my girlfriend (a pretty crazy movie affeciano) wants to come with me, too!

I apologies, you're right! After playing all those war games and watching all those war movies you'd think I would be able to recognize it!
This photo helps a lot more (http://i35.tinypic.com/n1b69e.jpg) than the fast preview in the theatre.
Kptn Howdie 12-29-2008, 04:19 PM As much as i`m a big fan of Clint and worship him much, i`m wondering when hollywood will sprinkle in a pinch of reality in these types of movies and not cast someone in a tough guy role that should be in a old folks role. Mr Eastwood is looking rather whethered these days and i`m finding it increasingly difficult to watch him perform in the manners he did from yesteryear, let alone chasing street gangs to boot. IMO it might be time for this man to be cast in film that suits his demeanor like the bucket list or escape from the retirement home.
Kudos to hollywood for coming up with a catchy title like gran torino to get us out and lighten our wallets slightly again. personally i would have kicked it up a notch and went with more prolific muscle car for a title such as Yenko Nova or Hemi Cuda, but maybe gran torino best describes what Clint Eastwood is: A blast from the past that really doesn`t mean much these days.

I will have to take issue with the opinion expressed...Mr Eastwood has remained not only a viable box office attraction as an actor but I believe you will be hard pressed to come up with a more influential cinema director of the last 20 years. From "Bird" to "Unforgiven" to the "Million Dollar Baby" and then the Iwo Jima films. they dont hand out Oscars to someone who "really doesnt mean much these days...

oh my, is Clint now bigger than Jesus? don`t think so dude. although i do agree with your statements eastwood is not much of a character actor. his roles are adherent to his former portrayals such as Blondie, Dirty Harry, Filo Beddo, Tough Guy Preacher, etc. As much as i did/still do enjoy all his flicks i`ve never really been blown away by any of his performances, he`s usually always the same in every movie he does no matter what role. that kinda leaves me saving my 50 bucks for the new Star Trek flick in the spring.
IMO, handing out oscars doesn`t mean much either!

no where in my post did I allude to the popularity of Clint to bypass that of Jesus. Read the post again and you will see that I was alluding to the fact that he is in rare company as far as there has not been someone to exceed his excellence in "directing cinema" in the last 20 years. Hard to argue with the Best director and actor statues that he received for being someone who "really doesnt mean much these days"

Gibsonian 01-11-2009, 08:06 AM Well written, directed, and performed. Another good one from Clint. He is an old man and he plays an old man, just a tough one, so I have no problem with his acting the tough guy part - very believeable. Hey, it's pretty damn likely he could kick the crap out of many men alot younger than him - he still has some decent pipes.
It's the best movie I've seen in a while, simple yet really engaging - I think just what Clint was looking for. It reminds me of the Unforgiven in that way.

Yeah. Him and John Wayne. You don't buy an old guy as a tough guy? I'm going to be 47 in March , wanna try me? "Well do 'ya , punk?" I'm sorry , I couldn't resist! A Clint quote just seemed to be the thing to do!
BTW , the old guy still has a decent set of guns on him. Even if he is an 'ice-cream lovin' former mayor of a liberal town' , he'll always be 'The Man With No Name' to me.

Yep, Eastwood is anything but liberal which makes the fact that he was elected as the mayor of Carmel interesting.
"Eastwood's no-nonsense libertarian streak became newsworthy in 1986 when, bogged down by red tape when he wanted to expand his restaurant (Hog's Breath Inn) in Carmel, California, he announced that he was running for mayor. He won with a 72% landslide, and his two years as Mayor reduced the city's regulations, had sidewalks put in on city streets, and got a library annex built that city elders had been bickering about for decades. And then, in a move more politicians should emulate, he declined to run for a second term."

Clint's character is Korean war veteran, which makes Clint the right age for this part. So are you suggesting they get a 40 something to play that role? That would be ridiculous.
What difference does his age make when he is carrying an M1?
As for the car, I agree. There are better cars than the Not so Gran Torino, but Hemi Cuda makes for a bad movie title. :D

MAXZ28 01-11-2009, 04:11 PM My bride and I just got back from seeing Gran Torino. We loved it! The supporting acting wasn't as strong as I had anticipated, but it wasn't too distracting. Clint was as rough, gruff, and tough as I had hoped. The movie didn't drone and was well paced and I really enjoyed the story. I recommend seeing it if you have any interest in going.
I do have a rant, though. Please turn off your frickin' cell phones- or better yet, learn how to turn them off! There were two folks sitting directly in front of us who couldn't seem to figure out how to turn off their cell phone even after two incoming calls. Somebody kept calling these seniors and they just let their phone ring, and ring, and ring.
Several of us asked them politely to turn the phone off but they looked at us like we were speaking a foreign language. Maybe they didn't understand English? I was waiting for ol' Walt to start growling from the silverscreen, point that M-1 straight at the lady and snarl, "Turn the damned thing off, Grandma!"
Seriously, if you don't know how to use the damned things, keep 'em in the car and out of the theater. It's very impolite to allow your phone to ring while others who paid good money are trying to enjoy their movie.
Okay, I'm done complaining. As you were.

I experienced this for the first time during this show. Usually the crowd is pretty cool about this. But there were two sets of bozos and not seniors messing with their phones. There was a big older guy in a wheelchair that I thought was going to ring their necks.
Funny though... during the whole time, Clint's character reminded me of one of my favorite AK members. :D

you have to face facts clint is getting old and his days of tough guy roles are coming to an end. a guy pushin 80 taking on street gangs is just not as believable now as it was in the 70`s. clint has taken enough of my money over the years, its time for someone/something different.

This is Hollywood. You want something/someone different, you are going to have to go to foreign films for that...

If he had the phone turned off in the first place,he wouldn't have had to deal with the calls...
This is probably the biggest reason why I stopped going to theaters. The arrogant and inconsiderate few that ruin it for others. Cell phone users are the worst.

Pretty clear you haven't seen the movie, but clearly have an opinion despite that.
From my perspective, the gang plays a pretty secondary role in this film, despite the movie trailers focus on it. The exploration of his personal relationships are the core of this movie.

Gibsonian 01-12-2009, 12:31 PM you have to face facts clint is getting old and his days of tough guy roles are coming to an end. a guy pushin 80 taking on street gangs is just not as believable now as it was in the 70`s. clint has taken enough of my money over the years, its time for someone/something different. __________________
It was very believeable that Clint could beat up the one short gang guy he beat up. Size difference was considerable, and Clint still looks to be in very good condition.
There are many fans out there that would disagree with you on the last statement - I likely won't miss any of what is left as there are not likely many movies left from Clint, one of my favorite all time actors.
tony-w 01-12-2009, 02:14 PM I want to see Gran Torino because I'm originally from Detroit and think highly of Clint Eastwood. But I live in San Francisco and my girlfriend wants to see Milk. Maybe she'll settle for a DVD of "Fast times at Ridgemont High" and we can then go see Clint in a theater.
SixCats! 01-17-2009, 05:29 PM Hi all,
Mr. Clint Eastwood has always been one of my favorite Film Stars. I look forward to seeing his latest movie. Years ago, I was an "Extra" in the movie
BIRD which Mr. Eastwood directed. After shooting a long scene, we broke for lunch. I'll never forget Mr. Eastwood sitting down at the table I was sitting along with the other EXTRAS and ate LUNCH with us! I'll also never forget Mr. Eastwood as he sat there and looked at me (for a long time) as if he knew me. I don't recall saying anything but perhaps hello. One HELL of a nice guy Mr. Eastwood! Heck, I'll even admit to liking BRONCO BILLY!
Regards,
SixCats!
Sandy G 01-17-2009, 05:36 PM I thought "Bronco Billy" stunk, too, the 1st time I saw it, but after seeing it umpteen times on HBO, I came to like it pretty well.
donoghue 01-17-2009, 05:56 PM Cool story 6cats. From what I saw of the trailer Eastwood indeed looks his age in this movie so I don't see any reason to fuss about believability. If he had gobs of makeup and his hair colored, wore sunglasses, and threw around make my day type lines towards gangbangers that would be pretty corny but I think some of us would get a kick out of it anyway.
Stillone 01-17-2009, 06:15 PM I saw the movie last week and both my wife and I liked it a lot. The place was full of people of all ages. He fit the part perfect, it needed to be somebody his age to play the role. Yeah a lot of the parts were in the trailers, but if you think you know what is going on from the trailers you will probably be off a bit. There is a lot more to the movie than an old guy with a gun. We all know somebody this totally racist. How he pulled it off without offending everyone and making it somewhat "humorous", it part of the magic.
MikeO 01-17-2009, 10:48 PM One of the best movies I have seen in a long time. In my mind it was not so much about violence as it is about changing times and how different generations see the world in different ways. Eastwood's character draws his morality, for better and worse, from the past. Racist views towards other cultures on one hand but also representative of our hard-working parents (or grandparents) who built the US after the Second World War into one of the greatest countries on earth. He comes from the working class (auto worker) and spent fifty years working to build his idea of a good life. He is having a difficult time dealing with a generation that does not seem to share the same values as his own.
His children and grandchildren, while not major characters in the film, are definitely much more from today's world. On the one hand they find his racist views offensive and point out he is still "living in the 50s" , but they are also a generation of the "entitled" who really did not have to struggle for anything in life. High-paying jobs, fancy foreign cars, and kids who seem to have little respect for their elders.
Added to the mix is a family of immigrants who live next door to Eastwood who in the end seem to share much more of his values than his own family.
While the plot of the movie revolves somewhat around gangs in the inner city, this movie is much more than a Clint Eastwood kick ass movie. It is a simple movie that seems to be both a criticism of modern life but at the same time giving some hope that things aren't always as bad as we think.
Vintage Pete 01-17-2009, 11:08 PM I'm with you on this one, although I haven't seen Gran Torino yet. "Unforgiven" - what a great western!
Let's not forget "The Outlaw Josey Wales"....

pioneervato 01-17-2009, 11:27 PM I saw it on opening day and enjoyed it very much except for the butt-wipe sitting in from of me who made sure he laughed the loudest. So much so I missed some of the dialogue in the movie.

Excellent synopsis.

My all time favorite Eastwood movie.:thmbsp:
stereofanboy 01-18-2009, 08:59 AM Do you like any AC DC songs? Chances are you like most of them. How about Dean Koontz books? Same deal. Both have had a lot of success while giving a lot of pleasure over the years. Clint Eastwood may seem to be somewhat of a "one note" actor, the role he most often plays may be the role of Clint Eastwood. The truth is that no one can play Clint Eastwood as well as Clint Eastwood although there are very many who try. Just because he is capable of performing convincingly in other types of roles doesn't mean that they are as comfortable a fit or that his fans would appreciate them as much. As far as attracting new fans, a lot of them would likely overlook such an attempt simply because Clint was involved. Will I see Gran Torino? Hell yeah! Will I see it in a theater? Hell no! I haven't seen a movie in a theater in years and suspect I never will again.

Gran Torino (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9teLeXZ3XMU)
Let's hear it for Clint.
"Get off my lawn!"
If any line had the potential for another "Go ahead, make my day." moment I'd say it is this one.
:thmbsp:
mjquinn 01-18-2009, 10:10 PM I can't think of the name. But it seems like it's gonna be like that old Charles Bronson movie where he goes and cleanes up a neigborhood
Death Wish

If he had the phone turned off in the first place,he wouldn't have had to deal with the calls...
This is probably the biggest reason why I stopped going to theaters. The arrogant and inconsiderate few that ruin it for others. Cell phone users are the worst.
soundmotor 01-19-2009, 10:06 AM Pretty clear you haven't seen the movie, but clearly have an opinion despite that.
Finally got to see 'Gran Torino' last night. Took my 16YO & he liked it as much as I did which was a lot.
:thmbsp:
MarantZappa 01-19-2009, 04:38 PM I saw it a few days ago. It wasn't what I expected, and come to think of it, I didn't know what I expected. In any case, I liked it. It was very well made and full of subtlety. I wouldn't call it an action movie (which I think I expected); it's more of a character study. Like I said, lots of subtlety, nothing's blatantly pointed out as in lesser movies. You have to think a little while you're watching it to put everything in it's place, and I've been considering seeing it again.
max-ac 01-19-2009, 04:56 PM 351 Cleveland?
i remember in the movie, someone said 'Cobra Jet'. I don't recall a scoop. I'm pretty sure the CJ was 428. not a ford guy, tho.
the movie was one of the best i've seen:thmbsp:
tony-w 01-19-2009, 05:09 PM My girlfriend still doesn't want to see it in a movie theater but I told her the movie has a San Francisco feel to it with all the Asian food.
dew042 01-26-2009, 02:16 PM Is anybody else amazed that Gran Torino managed to garner NO Oscar nominations? I sure am.
dew.
MichaelJ 01-26-2009, 03:04 PM My wife and I saw it Saturday. We both loved it. Clint was robbed. This film deserved multiple Oscar nominations. Now my bitch. The theater was packed and there were 2 seats left in the top row. There was a morbidly obese couple there with their coats on the empty chairs on either side of them. Apparently it isn’t comfy for them to sit on their coats. My wife asked nicely if they could move over so we could sit together. The woman complained and mumbled something about how we should have come earlier. I about lost it and asked if she paid full ticket price for their coats or not. They moved over.

Not at all surprised. Obviously not PC enough.

scubaguy10 01-26-2009, 06:53 PM The Gran Torino in the movie had a 428 Super Cobra Jet motor. Very torquey, not very rev happy. Those cars would go like hell in a straight line, but bad handling. Classic muscle car.
vinylviola 01-26-2009, 06:54 PM It doesn't surprise me that Clint didn't get any nods for 'Turino.' The Academy had too many other movies that deal with the favorite fare of the nominated movies. This film was just a little too straight forward for them. :) And that's why I liked it!
Genuinely funny so much of the time, I was really surprised how often I was laughing out loud.
I thought the supporting cast was pretty weak - surprising, since his recent films have had such all-star casts - these were all unknowns, and for good reason, IMHO.
tony-w 01-27-2009, 12:56 PM Gran Torino is just too far ahead of its time for an award. Milk would have been a good movie to win an award in the 80's.
soundmotor 01-27-2009, 08:34 PM I would truly love to attend a movie with most posting here in the audience. Phones would be shut off before anyone sat down, talking would abate when the film starts, and disruptive trips out to the lobby would be minimal.
jim-k 01-29-2009, 11:53 AM I really enjoyed GT. It starts slow as the characters build, but there is a payoff later in the film. Yea, Eastwood is getting old - but he is cast perfectly and his directing is top notch. A couple of the scenes will be future classics, I want to see it again just to hear 'em again.......

whoaru99 01-31-2009, 05:36 PM Finally went to see the film. Intentionally didn't read any of this until after words.
As several have mentioned, it was quite a bit different than I expected, but I liked it a lot.
