Wow, this is nice, looks like it was just taken out of the crate!
A bit too pricey for me at $995 but possibly worth it.

That thing popped up once before, and went for around 800 or so then dropped off the face of the earth. I'd get it, but 1000 + gas is too much.

Well....There goes my play money for the summer....

I'm a weakling for nice clean design ;)

Anyone got a schematic for the TV 1/2 of this? Hope it's not a #&^&^%^7 series string, or a crappy chassis, though I'd imagine Motoroller isn't that cheap...

It should be a neat set to get going. Provided nothing's wasted - they said the TV doesn't do anything. Hmm, could be the missing power cord ;)

Anyway, if anyone's got the schematic, please (pretty please!) let me know. I'm curious to see what I'm up against. The TV section I need more than the radio, which looks generically simple - but check out the size of that power XFMR!!!!

I have a gut feeling the TV's knobs aren't right, but then again who knows?

Hmm, they say it makes the ultimate big screen TV cabinet, but the TV's only a 19" Oh well ;)

It's Sams set 11 Folder 9. I have a copy. The knobs are correct. If it had been in Indiana or Michigan I would have snagged it myself. Excellent score. Hope that 19AP4 is strong...

PM me with a mailing address and I'll get the schematic to you.

The knobs on the TV are correct. I can photocopy the Rider's information and schematics for you. PM me your address and I will get them out to you either tomorrow or Tuesday.

Either-or is fine. You might want both Sams and Riders info. Mine is available if you want it. (p.s. Sams 111, not 11, my typo!).

19AP4? Metal!

I remember the first time I saw a rectangular metal tube, 21MP4 I think. Weird as heck. At least the round ones look 1/2 normal :)

I'll have to theft the camera with the minivan this week, so I can get pics. The radio looks interesting and I suspect the TV is too. The changer's funky! Wasn't that a Motorola-only design? I'm wondering how it does 45's - Admiral had a flip out finger on theirs which looks weird but yeah, it works.

At least there's a cubbyhole under the phono for the now-requisite cable box.

Hope this set can perform well - it sure as heck looks cool (almost as cool as a Scott ;) )

BTW, anyone in the NJ area want a metal cased late 50's RCA (KCS-117 chassis, I think) lemme know. The set works, has been mostly recapped, but the CRT's toast and it need a final tune up. It does get a sometimes respectable picture, though.

I thought the knobs were replacements. How do you know what channel you're on? I asked the seller what the CRT number was & haven't heard back. If it's glass, lemme know... (wink wink...)

Well, the front of the CRT's glass, the neck's glass, but the 19AP4 has a metal cone :)

Anyway, since I'm not turning it into a fish tank, it's safe to say that the CRT is gonna be needed... :)

I'm guessing the knob mystery will be solved when I get it - they look right, but the whole channel number thing's got me weirded out, unless it's shown in some non obvious way (like a Zenith's bullseye, or such). I've got two that say they're the right knobs, and they match the TV and look like they match the set...

But that's 1/2 the fun of getting a set over ebay....

The knobs are close to 1/2-inch thick. The channel numbers are printed around the circumference edge of the channel knob. Whatever number is straight up is the channel you're on. The knobs are translucent white plastic, backlit by #47 bayonet lamps (pinball-machine-playfield lamps). Sort of a built-in "TV lamp", I guess. I would imagine it looks as elegant during night viewing as it does just sitting there in the daylight, off. It will be tough finding a replacement metal-cone 19AP4, so let's hope you have vacuum and emission. Be careful with it during transport. There are other threads here about sealing the metal-to-glass bond with some sort of aftermarket goo. I'd probably do that, first thing...

Got your PM, I'll send the Sams folder Tuesday morning. Good luck!

Well, it's here....

The set, cosmetically, exudes coolness. Beyond the knobs (which, I'm in need of an assist on - the on/off/volume's warped, the channel's numbers are gone, and the contrast thingie is broken...), the safety glass is a conformal type like on later color sets. There's a mask behind it, giving it a kind of 15GP22 look to the whole thing. The changer's weird, but looks functional. It'll need a clean/lube though, bigtime.

The hold/size/lin/focus and even brightness, controls are hidden. And the fine tunning. At first, I couldn't imagine that Motoroller would have hidden these all over the chassis. Pulling the on/volume knob gave a hint: a little lever behind there. Sure enough, flipping it allowed the metal piece around the knob to slip off, revealing ALL of the needed adjustments! Here's the trick part: The pilot light serves double duty when the casting's off, allowing you to see the controls (which are marked via a decal). The fine tuning's the same way - with a 70's zenith style adjuster thing that spins around with channel changes. Neat!

The radio is weird - ho hum front end but push pull output. The rectifier's a locktal (!). The radio's amp doesn't serve duty as a TV amp - the TV and radio are almost totally independent of each other.

The TV chassis? Bonkers. Vertical output's a 25L6. Series string, right? Nope - it's transformer, with a second transformer for just that tube. There's 2 5U4s, a bunch of other tubes, and 3 (!) stages of video amp. The HV box has two doorknobs in it, in a doorknob - resistor - doorknob, like a power supply filter. The HV lead unplugs from the top of the box, and the yoke and focus coil unplug, too.

The tube's got a plastic apron over it, which got scuffed by one of the CRT support springs - there was a few layers of tape there.

Now, the bad news: the yoke was stuck to the CRT! Freeing it also freed the tube socket, but thankfully NOT the air. There's enough lead to reglue the socket, but it might not even be worth it: There's a brightener on the tube and the gun assembly looked a bit discolored. And the yoke might be wasted (it's pretty ratty looking, but I might be able to salvage it).

So, we've got a bum CRT, it looks like :( But the rest of the set is in good shape and looks like it'll clean up and work. There's surprisingly little evidence of repair in the set.

Anyone have any success at rebuilding a 19AP4? Oh, BTW, it's a freaking heavy tube for some reason...

A lot of people will pay a lot for something dead-mint original and really appealing and in driving distance. Like that little Airline in detroit I gave up at $400 and watched it go to $650. For a crummy li'l b&w roundie that was prolly somebody else's trash. Same was said 10 years ago about Harry's 621 that's already over $1000 with an hour to go...

Yeah I saw that 19AP4, but didn't get it :(

Well, it's not the ONLY one out there and this tube's still got a vacuum. Can Hawkeye rebuild this type?

Once I get the set rolling, I'll see just how good/bad this one is. I always seem to get sets with oddball CRTs anyway - I've got two sets with 21EP4s, a set with a 21MP4, and now this. With my luck, it's amazing I haven't found a CT-100 yet :/

John Folsom

Hawkeye can rebuild it , using the modified 6 hour reduced temperature oven cycle we developed for the 15GP22 rebuild. This minimizes the thermal stress on the large glass-to-metal seals on theCRT. But it will probably be a bit expensive. I will let Scott at Hawkeye quote you a price.

There are 19AP4s out there, you would likely find one if you keep looking.

Unfortunately here in ZA we only got TV transmissions in 1976, so theres ZERO chance of finding anything that looks like that locally.

Pictures will be coming once I theft the digicam from the parents. They bought it for 'vacations' and haven't been on one for a while but get upset when I borrow it anyway. I don't think I want to know (I have my own SD card for it)....

The turntable's cleaned up, though the turntable platter bushings are a bit...wobbly. I'll have to get new ones machined eventually. I'm up to the radio, which needs a bit of work, but it's not very complex. Once the radio's going, I'll do the TV set.

I've seen a few things online for reviving a CRT, most seem to suggest somewhat higher filament voltage, and a few suggest putting a hundred or two volts between the cathode and grid, too, with a meter to watch current. Might try these - I doubt it can make things worse.

I'm pretty sure I still have one of those turntables somewhere.

nasadowsk

Well, I've got a brightener on the filament plus my trusty Heathkit regulated PS, and with 100 volts on the grid, the current flow DID increase slowly for a while tonight (10 minutes). I'll put this back on tomorrow and see how high it goes with time (don't want to leave it on all night!). Maybe I'll bop enough life back into the tube to get a 1/2wy decent picture for testing and setup...

It has a woofer and a tweeter. Ought to make respectable sound. I don't think any other console from this era has a two-way speaker system except for the RCA Birkshire.

Well, the radio's alive :)

I got the AM band working, and the first thing that came up was WABC, right during their Saturday night oldies show! That just added to the cool of getting the thing going. The antenna needs work and the FM's still dead and oh man will it need an alignment, but it's getting there :)

I brought the TV up on the variac today. With just the octal (sweep section) tubes in, I got a horizontal and vertical sweep! The HV is only 7kv, so I'm 10 short (!).

The HV box was dirty, with the fine black HV box dust - the HV rectifer/filter unbolts and comes out, and the cleaned up well. The design looks like it could have taken a second tube for a doubler - wonder if that was another model or a planned change for the upcoming 21 inch sets?

The HV box is easy to work in, which is nice cause this one's had issues over the years...

This set's got a few bizzare features, most bizzare is the 25L6 as a vertical output - there's an autotransformer to jump the 6.3V to 25 volts under the chassis. I'm guessing Motoroller used a boatload of 25L6s or something, and needed to dump a few. There's also a squelch on the audio, for zero-signal situations. And the HV lead unplugs, allowing you to work on this set with the HV lead gone (and the CRT gone).

It looks like the basic stuff's working, I might put the balance of the tubes in and see if it picks up any stations - I suspect the set was stored after the CRT took a dump, or it was simply replaced by a newer set - there isn't anything obviously wrong with it other than age.

Oh yeah, there's a zillion caps in this thing. Motorola must have owned a capacitor company too....

Just felt like bumping this one. I sent you a Sams set for it, several weeks ago, did you get it? How's the restoration going?

nasadowsk
07-22-2008, 07:25 PM
Yeah, I did get the Sams, actually. It arrived the day I picked up the set :)

So far, the radio's 1/2 working (waiting on a 33pf for the FM section + power cord and final tune up), the TV gets stations but the sweep sections are a bit flakey.

The 19AP4 is shot :(

John Marinello

If you think it will fit, I *might* know where you can get the all-glass equivalent 19DP4, NOS. It's a 1/4" larger diameter, and also a bit "fatter" because the O.D. extends further rearward before it tapers to the neck. Very unusual glass tube, because the cone is flat like a metal tube.

I got a quote recently from Hawkeye on a metal tube (16EP4): $450!!!

I don't know how I'd mount it, though. And the safety glass is would be an issue - the glass is mounted like a 21FBP22 on an old Zenith...

Ok, the TV chassis's making great progress - we got sweep, we got SOUND! And that means video on this set. The sweep circuits seem to be locking up nicely.

Uh oh! The HV is only 7kv! Not enough to light up that big screen. A little diagnosis found a bad yoke. The replacements, FWIW, are listed as:

Stancor DY-7
Merrit MD70F
Motor roller: 24C792699 or 24K792714

It's got a bad section in it (open).

I have a Sparton that's less than wonderful, which lists the same yokes as replacements, and it's yoke even looks the same. I'm thinking of thefting it for parts (it's a less than amazing TV, and pretty plain Jane). Assuming I can't get a 'fresh' replacement yoke.

This brings up an interesting question - did Motorola, etc, sub these yokes out to Stancor, etc? or wa the TV paerts demand that great back then that third party companies could bother with the effort making these yokes? How unique IS a yoke, anyway? Are they pretty much all the same?

bgadow
07-27-2008, 09:48 PM
Some TV makers made their own yokes/transformers while others didn't. RCA and GE seemed to "roll their own" but smaller companies like Sparton and Motorola likely would have bid them out. Apparently companies like Stancor, Thordarson, etc, would reverse-engineer the parts. Some aren't very good matches, need lots of mods, etc, while others (like some Thordarson "improved replacement" flybacks) are better than factory.

I would check with Moyers as they just might have it. How unique is a yoke? It would be engineered for screen size and deflection angle-I guess those are the most important factors. Other things can come into play.

nasadowsk
07-28-2008, 07:39 PM
Moyers has the Merrit yoke - unless anyone here's got a Motorola origional they're parting with, I'll get it.

As an aside, I found the reason behind the gutless HV on my Magnavox - open winding on the flyback's HV. Out of curiosity, I decided to unwind it and found to my enjoyment that the break was about 10 turns below the last one. Anyway, I just re waxed it with beeswax and will be putting it together later, might fire up that set while I wait for the yoke on the motor-roller - with a punchy HV section, that set ought to work nicely (it was getting a 1/2 decent pic before...)
