Another curb side find: Sony KV-1212

2 weeks ago, I saw this TV sitting upside down on top of the trash can on my way home at night. I didn't know how long it had been sitting outside, as it had some mud and road salt on it. The inside was still clean however, other than the usual dust attracted from the HV. The power cord had been cut off.

Don't know the manufacture date, but I assume this is a 1970 TV? So far, it works, but I am only getting about 1" of vertical deflection. Vertical controls have some, but very little effect. I didn't have time to really poke around in it, but I am guessing a bad, dried up electrolytic cap. I am going to buy an ESR meter soon anyhow. The picture I did get was good, although the background on the greyscale needs adjusted, as well as the focus. All the pilot lamps work (I just love TVs with lighted dials), and gets very good sound.

It is just missing the VHF knob and the Sony emblem.

Just replace all the electrolytic caps in the vertical circuit. Most are probably shot anyway. You probably can salvage suitable caps from a few computer monitors.

Had a set, like your find, that I bought new in the summer of 1969. Got lots of use
out of it before I set it out for trash a few years ago. It still looked brand new,I had
cleaned it up for a "who has the oldest Sony" promotion by a local appliance store.
Although the sets were sold as "all solid state" there is one tube hidden deep inside
that I think is for the high voltage rectification.

Great set. I have one I bought new back then, and I've dragged it through two moves without getting it going again. Something in the power supply, it won't turn on, just a click as the protection kicks in.

One of those jobs I need the Special Tool for, a Round Tuit

wa2ise: You are right, I think it would be best to just recap that whole section. It'll probably be a while before I have another chance to get at it.

Andy: I'm not sure if this set has the HV rectifier or not. I didn't really poke around too much in the set, but I don't remember seeing a sticker indicating it. The flyback is, however, in a cage, which I didn't bother to check yet :p. I do know this set does have instant-on on the CRT. Another thing weird about this set is the antenna terminals are banana plugs...and I've never seen a TV with 2 headphone jacks either.

I was looking around, but is this the first Trinitron? : http://www.rwhirled.com/portacolor/Sony-1210U.htm The 1210U. I know this one has the HV rectifier despite the "solid state" label.

TV BETA GUY, Your research picture showing the SONY 1210U does look more like the
set I used to have. Andy was correct when he thought I had the first model. I did
some file cleaning a year or so ago in my file cabinet. I may have thrown away any info
that I had on the 1210, but I will recheck later. I also had the SONY 7" color portable,
which I bought 2 years later and was still working when I set it at the curb. This was
all at the prompting of my wife's "what are you going to do with those old TV sets in
the basement". I stumbled onto this AudioKarma site about a month ago and became a
member. Had I known that there was such an interest in the older TV's and Audio, I
never would have thrown away so much of my old stuff. Goodwill has received a lot of
my old goods that were in working order as well as clothing etc.
NOW for the good news-- I FOUND the antenna with the banana plug connectors
on it and you are welcome to it. It's the VHF ant model AN-14 with the banana plug
end marked EAC-12 Japan. I also found the UHF antenna that is simply a chrome ring
with four hooks and springs that allow it to be adjusted for reception. If you want these let me know. I'm usually on line after 12am est until 6am.
REGARDS

iirc that was what was wrong with mine.
the coating was cracked up and falling off in chunks.

Andy, I found the number of my set and it is a KV-7010 UA. Both sets look a lot
alike in general. I've been trying to post a pix but have not had any success. Maybe
I'll figure it out, I've never done it before.

I have a 7010. My dad got in in spring 1969 in New York at a place called Hammacher Schlemmer's. They specialised in being "The 1st on the block" w/a lot of stuff. I don't think the 7" sets were ever imported here in large #s, if even officially by Sony. It has a couple tubes in the HV section, I think.Had an incredibly sharp picture.-Sandy G.

Sandy G--hi, the first time I saw a 7010 was in a 1968 Popular Electronics mag.
I believe they were the"one"that said it was all solid state. It did have a tube, a
high voltage rec. tube, that I did change at sometime. I still have the tube its a
1S2A/DY87 not a very big tube with a chrome metal cap. I really don't think it was bad
but it was the only thing I could do at the time. My kids finally did it in and although
it was still working when I sent it to the curb, it was a pale shadow of its former self.
Does yours still work?
