The estate sales thread continues...with a very long departure from VK, Im glad to be back. Yesterdays sale was at 6533 Kensington Ct, in Downers Grove, IL. My goal was to buy a work bench at yesterdays sale, but that was already sold. However, I stumbled across a rather interesting set that I would have never expected to find, especially in a somewhat newer subdivision. Its a 1973 Magnavox. Its the real deal when they were still made in Ft. Wayne, IN. Its a mostly all tube set, still using a 6BK4 regulator as well. It was sitting in the unfinished (dry) basement covered in light dust probably since the late 80's when this sub was built. No price tag on it, probably expected it to be junked after the sale. At a first glance I figured it was a solid state set but I was wrong. Its actually full of tubes. This one is about as low hour as anyone could hope for. It basically never got used, I was first to take the back off too. Its like new inside and this set works perfect still with a great sharp picture. They ended up wanting $20 for it. I drove home to get my appliance cart, but by the time I got back, someone offered to help me move it. The CRT is a magnavox with the 274 EIA code, so its really an RCA. Its a nice sounding set too, must be right at the tail end of Magnavox tube type chassis. A very unique set, but pretty decent quality too, even the cabinet. Just needs a wipe down with a damp cloth on top to get rid of the dryed water mark.

"drh4683",
I love your signature,"I tolerate the present by living in the past"
It's good to know I'm not the only one who feels that way!

Incidentally,I really enjoyed your videos on the Seeburg 1000 background music system and your 6cyl "Vista roof" Impala,in addition to your tvs of course!
I collect those background records too.

Congratulations on your find....nice Dodge in the background too!

Welcome back, Doug!

That is a nice set that looks to have been used very little!

According to a Magnavox repairman who I used to know, the T974 was the last hybrid large screen color chassis. He added that the T979 was the first SS large screen color chassis. I actually have a T979 solid state Magnavox from around the same time period as your set.

Nice start to the 2011 estate sale thread. Glad to see you're back.
Is the UHF tuner continuous or does it have stops for each channel?

Thanks all. Glad to be back on-line. The UHF tuner system is what I call the "odometer style" as it has two individual rotary drums that indicate each channel. I've never run across this chassis before, so needless to say its a nice piece to add to the collection. Lots of nichicons in there too...

An Oak Forest estate sale at 15224 Arroyo Ave. Found two Zenith consoles, first one was down in the basement which was a 1973 model with the flat solid state chassis. As ususal someone is standing right in front of it and the guy didn't want to move as he was just talking to someone else at the sale. Its a model D4744W, 25DC56 horizontal solid state. The rocker switch failed like so many of them do and the previous owner rigged in a new push button switch. He drilled a small hole, about 3/16" through the cabinet to make it work. I suppose thats better than going through the control panel. It can be corrected to look decent and install a new switch which I have a few of. The sets in nice shape, its just coated in dust. The asking price was a little insane, they wanted $75.00 for it. I didn't say anything yet, so I looked around the rest of the house before I asked about getting the price down for a basically "useless to the modern world" TV. The house was jammed with stuff. Upstairs in the master bedroom was a rather unexpected find. A 1974 Zenith Avanti with space command. Its another flat chassis solid state, the 25EC58. A bonus with this one, the manuals and papers were in a bag ontop of the TV. Then I saw the price tag on this one. WTF almost came right out of my mouth. No way was I about to pay that insane asking price or anything near it. I knew if I didn't take the set, it would be dumpster material though. That being said, I felt it was my responsibility to get the set out of its current misery though, it was one of those houses with millions of glass figurines and dolls all over the place, the walls were covered in decorative dinner plates as well. These obviously are not my favorite estate sales to say the least... Not sure how the husband was able to deal with all of that, but then found out he died back in '83 so this must have been his wifes way of occuping her time for the next 28 years.
On to the sales desk, the ladies running the sale instantly recognized me as "TV guy". "Hey your the TV guy, did you see the TV's". I was polite but had to inform them that those prices were priced way out of my league. The one lady goes "really, that pedistal one must be rare". I had to inform them that nobody in the world would pay $325, just being honest as I've been doing the TV thing for so many years I've seen what they go for. So the lady gives me a sheet and asks me to write my bid down. I also told them $75 for the one downstairs is overly optimistic as well. So she said to write two bids down. So I wrote down $40 for the avanti "bedroom TV", and $25 for the "basement TV" as that was the fair real world asking prices for such TV's. The lady looked at my bids as I told her Im not trying to insult you but those are honest prices for what those sets should be going for at an estate sale. The other ladies were like "Your probably right, just take them for $65". I couldn't believe that, I figured they'd get all upset and argue with me. Im usually not the type to try to get prices down but this was a case of extreme greed and or overly optimistic sellers. Besides, I usually never find an old console priced at over $50, even if its mint and usually at the $50 and down, I'll just pay it and move on. I think they realized they were in a house with tons of crap and it had to go. The one lady by the door said said nobody could help me and that her son had a bad back. 10 seconds later I see him moving this huge iron statue thing by himself to someones car outside...
Once the guy came in I asked and he gave me his bad back line but then he offered to help. So I told him not to get involved if his back is bad but thanks for offering. I didn't want him to mess up his back even though that statue must have weight as much if not more than the TV... So some other guy offers to help me out. I get the basement set out to the truck, he leaves and goes back in the house to get ready for the avanti upstairs. Its starting to snow heavy out so I had to cover the set up and I couldn't get in the house right away. Sure enough I see the avani coming out the front door with the "bad back" guy helping move the set with the other guy at the sale. This woman helping run the sale starts telling me in this rude tone "you should have stepped in and moved it without using my son HE HAS A BAD BACK" like Im supposed to feel guilty and make him stop. I had to tell her Im not the one that forced him to move the set. I told him not to help if his back was bad and he obviously must have have insisted in helping with this other guy while i was still outside. Nothing I could do to stop it. Go yell at your son, not me. Long story short, I gave both guys five bucks and it made their day. The lady running the sale that I made the deal with was perfectly happy with my offers though, so there was no harm done there. It was that other woman who was being a jerk about me "taking advantage of her son with his bad back". Whatever. Before I left the one lady let me look through a box of manuals and sure enough, I find a bag with the manuals for the avanti with the remote control in it. The manuals on top of the avanti at the sale were actually for the set in the basement. So that was a nice plus. Both sets were bought new at Certified Television, they were a huge dealer back in the 60's-early 70's in the Chicago area. Both have the tags on the back when they were installed as new sets. The avanti was set up on 9-12-74 and the other set was 9-15-72. So you ask, just bring an appliance cart and move it yourself to avoid the people? No way would that have worked in this house, the way the stairs were and the people and the clutter it would have been impossible.

I used to have a 1972 Zenith console exactly like that when i was a kid during the late 1980's which i got from my brother for free. The leg mounts were poorly made if i can recall.

Not a problem. You might be offered either of these sooner rather than later...

Same old story, too much coming in, not enough going out.

Okay, neither are rectangular nor solid-state, but they are definitely finds!

I was fortunate to attend an estate sale Friday, a day earlier than the public sale. The house belonged to a gentleman who was a ham and spent his career repairing and calibrating equipment in the Navy, from around WWII until the late 70's. The family had hauled all the electronics from the attic into the kitchen. I couldn't even tell what half of it was. It was strongly emphasized that they wanted to sell it all as a lot. Well, I didn't intend to buy so much, but my offer was accepted and I wound up taking home an F-100 filled to the brim with old Navy test gear, radios, books and the two prizes below: A Hallicrafters T-54 and a Telefunken radio with the Nazi eagle/swastikas beside the dial.

All the great estate sales seem to be hundreds of miles away from where I live (northeastern Ohio, near Cleveland). The small town I live in does not have that many estate sales; those I have seen here don't have TVs, stereo consoles and such. There are folks in this town who have lived here most of if not their entire lives, so I would expect that after they pass on, their relatives would have an estate sale just to get the stuff out of the way, but as of yet (I've lived here 11 years), I haven't seen any sales anywhere near comparable to the ones Doug, et al. find in Chicago. Maybe the fact that Ohio is the easternmost state of the Midwest has something to do with it? Hmmm. :scratch2:

When I saw the pictures of the items for sale at both of the estate sales referenced here, I was reminded of the huge job I had as far as moving stuff went when I moved here in late 1999. I had brought perhaps 80 percent of the stuff with me that I'd had at my previous residence; since I was moving into a small apartment (one bedroom), that meant just about everything I brought here had to go. Go it did, mostly to the trash. Oh well. It will make it a lot easier if I ever have to move again; when I downsized the first time I had gotten rid of most of the stuff I knew I either would not have room for at the new apartment or would no longer have any use for. Seems to me, however, that in both estate sales shown in this thread, the houses were being cleared out 100 percent, as if the owners were moving into furnished apartments or nursing homes, or, as in my case, they were moving into an unfurnished apartment and would buy all new furniture.

BTW, while I did see a '70s-vintage Magnavox 19" color TV in the photos of the Naperville estate sale, I could not find any roundies in either batch of pictures, although I did see a stereo console in one. I looked high and low several times at both sets of photos, but the early '60s Maggie roundie mentioned here was nowhere to be found. Since there were perhaps 100 photos in total (for both sales), perhaps the roundie is there, but I missed it.

I was just surprised to see a roundie. Most of the sets I've been seeing at these nearby estate sales have just been some late-1990's/early-2000's junk, or furniture. The house with the roundie and the tabletop Magnavox looked the best.

Image 63 of the Naperville sale is a Heathkit AA-32 amp, a really nice low power unit with 6GW8 / ECL86 outputs.

I've had two of them and they sound really good for what they are. One of them was a low mileage unit with all orig Mullard tubes that got stored away and became a mouse condo. It was very corroded but it will sing again!

Sorry to get off topic!

Although I definitely want someone to pick up these two sets, they really fit in well with the older house. There was an estate sale posting last week in central Illinois that was selling a 1974 (Gosh I already forgot, I think Zenith) TV and I thought it looked too retro to leave the 1960's house.

I drove over and checked out the sets today on my lunch hour. The roundie is a Magnavox and is priced at $30. The table top was made in 1980 (either Aug. or Oct.) and is priced at $25. I think it is an inline gun CRT, I didn't check that closely. Just guessing by the age.

I don't have really have room for the roundie. I'd be interested in the table top if it had a wood or steel cabinet with power transformer and a delta gun.

Tomorrow is half price day. The sets in general seemed to be in good shape.
Hopefully somebody can give these a good home.

Well I picked up the Magnavox. Nothing to special, the cabinet is pretty beat up, however, it is a remote control set! It was $15.00 at half off. Not sure if it works, its seen various hacks over the years.

I when to another sale in Glen Ellyn at 22W601 Alhlstrand this morning as well and found a nice '73 RCA XL-100 console in the contemporary cabinet with the chrome legs. Its a full size set with a 25" CRT. Model GR-800 A. It was in the 2nd floor family room/den. '73 is also the first year for the XL-100 design so this is first generation for this type of TV. This one has the tilt out control bin with the slider pots and a CTC-48 chassis. It works pretty well, no antenna when I tried it, just my finger on the UHF antenna screws when I tuned in channel 23 to get a faint picture. No price on it at the sale as of course nobody thought it would sell... I got it for $20.00. The cabinet is very nice quality, its all real hardwood, no particle board junk, not even on the bottom of the TV cabinet or at the base by the floor. I wasn't expecting the TV to weigh as much as it did when I was first ready to move it. It definitly has some considerable mass. With a little clean up by the controls, it'll display really well. The TV shop that sold the set most likely are the ones who cut the "1973 model year" off the model tag on back of the set considering it was sold in March of '74. They probably didn't want the buyer to see that it was last years model and probably got him to pay top dollar for it. The model tag on the chassis helps confirm this as the model year part of the tag was present... Why else would that get cut off?
One thing I found interesting is that the warranty registration sheet for the TV was ontop of the set when I found it. The old scotch tape just dried out and someone just pulled it off without damage, however, note that someone had cut the original owners name off the tag as you can tell the entire tag was taped around its rectangular perimeter at one time judging from the tape marks left behind on the back cover... For some reason, someone looked behind this TV and noticed the personal info and had to make sure it was removed.

Its a nice unique set, don't find too many of the contemporary early 70's RCA's.

I've never seen that exact model-very sharp! It screams "1973!" Looks like the kinda set that would be in the living room on the old Bob Newhart or Mary Tyler Moore shows.

Stopped by a sale myself today; I'm seeing more advertised than I ever use to, but most are in newer developments so I don't bother. This one was in a 80 year old house out in the country. Waste of time, though. I don't think there was anything there older than the 80s. $60 for a BPC 25" inside; out in the yard, in the pouring rain, was a 12" bw from the 80s. No thanks.

Growing up we had the JCPenney cousin of that chassis, with a less contemporary cabinet of course. They bought it in fall 1975 after our Motorola WID gave up and cost too much to fix. A family friend had the same set probably the year earlier, and I recall it had a different font on the backlit channel indicators. Odd, eh?

Doug, where are you finding about the locations of these estate sales? I keep looking for Estate Sales in Chicago on estatesales.net, but they are limited. Do you have any suggestions for finding more estate sales in Chicago?

How many times are you going to makes this thread unnecessarily long by quoting posts with 10 pictures in them??? It's mind of my pet peeve for forums.

It's just this thing I have. Whenever I quote a post with a lot of pictures, I remove the links to shorten it. It's a courtesy thing to others, so they don't have to scroll through pages of reposted pictures.

I agree; in fact, to me it's boring to see the same pictures over and over again, even if they are of vintage TVs. If someone wants to see the photos in a thread, they can always go to the beginning of that thread--there is no need to keep reposting images in every reply to it.

Posting Tip.

When quoting, remove any Image Links from the area inside the Quote /Quote Tags, this prevents reposting of Images already in the Thread.
This will only be needed when the original poster has linked to the pictures, not if they are Attachments.

It doesn't hurt to remove any extra Verbiage from the Quote either and only include the part you are actually interested in.

I did edit a couple of the Posts in this thread to remove the extra Photos.

So.....is that how you keep an RCA Model Tag from falling off? Cut out a third of it? Why didn't I think of that???? :D

Those that know RCA's can appreciate having the model tag intact and attached!

Great find, Doug! (It bears repeating.....)

Nice set indeed! It's nice someone took care when trimming the owner's name off of the warranty card rather then just using a box cutter like the original shop did.

And it's poor etiquette to quote an entire picture post. As my fellow sysadmins would say... Trim your quotes! :D

This weekend I came home with a CTC-9 Latham, 16" Magnavox all-channel built in Japan, 27" Magnavox console (early 60's) with cabinet issues and a '63 or so Westinghouse 21" metal tabletop set with automatic tuning. Not sure how salvageable some are, but the RCA at least is complete.

pics to come later...

I have a 27" CRT maggie, I hope the CRT on yours is strong, they are somewhat rare. Mine is weak but watchable. I was reading up on selling prices of CRT's in an old tube list, the 27" were nearly double what a 24" was selling for.

AUdubon5425

Well, these were smokers' sets and sat for years in an abandoned side of a double house. Plaster & paint falling off walls, roaches, etc. Chassis are filthy! The RCA is in the best shape - I'll post pics of it in the color forum.

The Magnavox is an early 60's VHF only 27" set. It originally sat on four legs but the particleboard base rotted. CRT tests about halfway on the meter.

This Westinghouse is a metal cabinet 21" with "Automatic Tuning" and has provisions for a remote setup. Most of the tubes are missing - the CRT shows promise:

There was an estate sale at 4846 N. Newcastle in Chicago yesterday. Nice and close to where I work, so I was able to check it out on my lunch break with my friend from work. The home was mostly untouched and they saved everything (which are the best sales). In the basement, I found a nice Motorola Quasar II works in a drawer. FINALLY and mint motorola comes my way at the estates. Clean as a whistle, non smokers set. The basement was bone dry too, never had any moisture problems, but the guy still had it on a little platform. Its never been serviced, just as clean as the day it was made. It was built in September of '73 so its toward the end of the real Motorola built TV's. Its a very nice higher end cabinet made of actual hardwood, not particle board or masonite and has the nice red speaker grill cloth. Just a very well cared for TV that saw hardly any use, I'm sure Im the first to have taken the back off. It still has the various quality control and final assembly check stickers on the back. It's got the TS-934 chassis. It does work, has a little 60 hz ripple but the picture is bright and clear. It has the pushbutton UHF tuner which I always liked the look of, but never had one before. This TV lived its life just a couple miles from where it was born at the Motorola plant in Franklin Park.

I couldn't resist but to go to the sale at 124 S 2nd in Geneva. I have no room for anything like this but when theres will there's a way as the old saying goes. The Admiral roundie was still there, so whoever bought it still didn't pick it up yet as of this morning. So I looked at the other TV's and I checked out the "unknown" combo. Turns out to be a TV that I have never seen before in the Chicago area: a Packard Bell color set. This has always been Zenith land for obvious reasons and Packard Bells are virtually non-existent. Needless to say, I never saw anything like it before. That being said, I had to make arrangements to save this peice. I had my appliance dolly with me, so I was able to move it by myself. It was marked $50 and thats what I paid. No, I didn't save any of the other sets. They were all pretty rough. In fact, this PB is the cleanest and nicest of all the sets at the sale. When I flipped it on its end, there was a hand written date on the bottom of the set from the manufacturer. The cabinet was built on June 18, 1968 by "JRO". It does not appear to have ever been serviced either. It works with a bright blank raster so thats all that matters at this point. The stereo works well, both channels work too loud and clear. A very unique stereo tuner too and a garrard turntable. I've always wanted a PB color set so I could see what they were all about. A very high quality chassis here, so much like a Zenith but with part of it being vertical. All original tubes too. I made a bold move and got this thing in my basement which was a major accomplishment. I think it will be the only combo that I will ever dare to move in the basement. Big question for you guys in California who know about these: What is the model number and did they ever have a tag on them? I can't even see where a model number tag would have been, usually theres some discoloration or residual glue from where a tag once was but the back cover looks clean and perfect like there never was a model. How were the tags affixed and did they even have any or are they hidden inside the set?

Nice find! From what I've seen, PB sets of this era were of very high quality. I have a '67 TV-only color console that has basically the same chassis. Mine has some color issues and a CRT with cataracts; but, I think it will be a good one, once I fix it. I also have a '66 PB 19" B&W "Astronaut". This set is also built on a vertical handwired chassis w/ power transformer. On this one, the yoke is missing and the CRT is nearly dead; but, I'd still like to fix it.

I have a '69-'70 PB color console with the same control layout as yours; but, the chassis is the standard PC board based horizontal style.

Towards the end, many PB sets were rebadged GE's, Panasonic's, etc.

I think PB got out of the radio/TV business in '74 and they made one solid state color console during their final year.

PB sets never turn up in my area, either. These were obtained, about 1.5 years ago, when we went to that shop in SC. They were a PB dealer and that's where I found out what I know about PB. I've also been told that the sets from the '67-'68 years are better performers than the stuff from the early '70's.

Teledyne bought P-B sometime in the 70's - we had a SS Teledyne/P-B Console in the shop for a few months, as we fought a vertical problem, that turned out to be an error in the Sams. Another shop alerted us to the problem, and one transistor later, the problem was fixed. I've got a P-B 19" solid state chassis - er, rather a rebadged Sanyo chassis from a P-B set.

Packard Bell only offered one solid-state console, the Teledyne PB1000, in their last year - 1974. I ran across one a while back but several parts were missing and it looked like the owner was trying to recreate that part of the circuitry using old transformers and God-knows-what from his junk drawer. Needless to say I passed on that one.

Went to a few sales today, picked up a couple color sets. First sale was in La Grange at 633 S. Waiola. Found a 1963 Admiral roundie combo in the basement. Fortunately a dry clean basement so the TV is still in nice shape. The TV doesn't work, won't even power up but the stereo works perfectly. It was half price day, so I got it for $35.00. I had my appliance dolly with me, so I was able to move it by myself as it was basically impossible to get anyone at the sale to help me even if you offer them a few dollars to help. You are better off doing things yourself anyway. I dropped the Admiral off at home before I went to any more sales.
The next sale was in Forest Park at 836 Thomas Ave. I went to check out a Motorola stereo that I saw in the sale preview photos. They wanted $295 for it! I said forget that, but on the otherside of the living room was an unexpected 1969 Zenith color set! Not too often do I find full to the floor consoles. They took nice care of this one. It's a Zenith so you know what that means... works just fine... Looks like nobody ever serviced it either, no evidence of wear around the twist tabs on back. Its a 16Z7C50 chassis. Another one of those strange situations I run into wondering how a TV lasts that many years in the living room of a small home and go untouched.

Doug, you ought to get yourself a trailer. This Feb. I got an 8 foot X 5 foot single axle with a folding ramp brand new from a trailer dealer. You can fold the ramp down and pull the dolly right up it. I went to some estate sales this weekend and used the trailer hitched to the Grand Marquis to haul a console phonograph and large speaker cabinet. It is even better than a truck with a Tommy Lift and lets you never have to lift or turn equipment up to or inside a pickup bed again.

Towing with a big car is great as you have a low center of gravity and can easily keep an eye on the load in the rear view mirror. After having lifted upright pianos and washing machines in a pickup bed I vowed this year to myself I would never load equipment like that in a pickup truck again and risk hurting myself and have kept that promise!

Garage sales are pretty big right now in the Chicago suburbs as well. I was driving by one when I saw late-1970's Zenith with the single varactor tuner and electronic tuning. I just had to buy it for $15. It works fine, but I can only pick up VHF Channel 6 from my house. The previous and most likely original owners told me that if it didn't work, it wouldn't be out for sale and instead be in the trash. They were able to pick up an additional channel or two based on their location. It was strange though because I live only about 10 minutes from them and I can't pick up those channels. I will post pictures as soon as I can find my camera.

By the way, that 1969 Zenith looks great in that house. It's too bad that their selling it, but at least it's going to a good home.

A sale at 7733 W. Montrose Avenue, Norridge, IL. It was posted in the B&W forum.
THAT is where your "haul" was? Wow, I used to live less than a mile from there, until I moved here to California. I still have family in the Chicago area.

You got a nice collection from that sale.

Thats a great haul Nick! What year was the poster of the zenith sets from? Did you find out if he was a TV repair tech or did he work for Zenith? Lots of times those guys were engineers for Zenith who have a ton of Zenith stuff all over their house like that. Considering he lived in Norridge, he's was only about 10 minutes away from the plant so its quite possible. Was there any other zenith litterature?

The owner appears to have worked Loge Robertson for some time, it appears they made large format process / stat cameras. I found a lens there from such a camera. Later it appears he worked for the Public Library in the area, there were recent boxes addressed to him at the library and I bought a Western Electric 1A2 key phone that had been installed at the library.
The concentration of Zenith items makes one imagine he was connected to them somehow. He must have been collecting until recently because there were some boxes from ebay there addressed to him and some recent looking notes about TVs for sale.

There's no less than 3 Zenith tubed square sets there: one is in the garage next to the mint Cadillac, another upstairs, and a third in the basement. Go for them, Doug!

There is a late 60s looking rectangular console in the garage that I only saw briefly when they had the garage open to show somebody the cars, I didn't see if it was color or not.

I didn't see any Motorola stuff, almost everything was Zenith. The woman running the sale told me her father used to work for Motorola and she had some old electronics from him.

I found this mug there showing the history of Zenith's TVs which is pretty nice.

Jeff, there is always room for more and adjustments are always made while still maintaining a comfortable lifestyle by not having them all in my way.

Nick, was the rectangular set upstairs that 19" chromacolor II? I was just over there. The lady said no TV's were in the garage and it was locked up so I didn't bother asking to go look. I only picked up the one in the basement, it's a '68 b/w metal cabinet 23" hospital set as it has the three pronged grounded cord. Also came with the owners manual which was unusual. Looks like it had very light use, he had a blanket covering it which helped save it from that miserable moldy basement...

I got the two metal cabbinet table Zeniths, allong with other goodies and one set I purchased by mistake. I will post pics tomorrow. There is a Zenith 23" monochrome console in the garage it has electronic tuning, but no space command chassis that I could see (is this something Zenith did). I wanted to buy this and a early 60's GE portable radio phono stereo console(a very desireable model), but I coulden't afford them along with what I got. So they remain there in the garage. There are two inline Zenith table tops that remain in the basement along with a battery ultra-sonic remote that I assume goes to one. Also still there in the basement are the two zenith mono consoles and the mono motorola portable tube set (I moved this into my wanted pile, but had to leave it which I regret). Many tube radios remain along with other goodies that I'd like to snag.
I'm totally broke now, and can NOT return so someone please save what remains in my stead.

I saw a few of them in my travels. At one time you had to pay a daily fee for a TV in the room. They had a key switch on the side. This set was a '58 RCA. This was one of those 17" set with a rounded cabinet. It was probably a transformer powered chassis. P.S. The Koss family, The head phone firm, was one of the first companies to rent TV's in hospitals in the Milwaukee area.

The top set I bought by mistake because I mistook it's inline gun CRT for a Delta gun CRT. The bottom set I'm contemplating stealing the CRT from to use in the console that is missing it's CRT in the second photo, though I could be persuaided not to.

That's a great haul! I'm happy to see someone saved those steel cabinet b/w sets. (They seem to be missing the built in antennas more often than not - once I found one on ebay, but I still have 2 sets needing them, they seem to be rather scarce)

I've actually got the telloscoping rabbit ears, but not the pieces to mount them. I bet the parts I need are still there in those central built in cabbinets that the TV's were set on. Sigh.
I'll post pictuers of the antenna on the set that still has it's antenna so if anyone spyies it while looking through the basement they can buy the parts for me.

This was a good weekend, picked this one up on Saturday in Westchester at 10354 Kipling Ave. It's a '68 model with the CTC30, motor drive UHF and VHF tuner, model GJ773L. Still in the living room hooked up and it actually works and is a low hour set. Usually don't find old sets like this in an Apartment. There were no other TV's in the house so I take it the lady just never watched TV.

Picked up a 1966 Panasonic console color TV at a sale in Chicago at 3747 W. Eastwood Ave on Thursday. There was also a 1971 Panasonic table model TV on the cart at the same estate sale (which was actually an apartment). The '71 was a nice set, has a metal back cover. Mark was at the sale too, but we worked out a good deal that we were both happy with and both TV's got saved.
The '66 console set actually works which I didn't really expect. I'll have to do a little write up on this one as a seperate thread as its a rather unique TV. The '71 is also an unusual TV. I found interesting that this family owned all Panasonic TV's. Even more unusual that these TV's survived all these years being in an apartment. Most people that live in apartments usually don't keep old stuff like this around in their living space their whole life. They are both very special sets.

Today I went to an estate sale in Evergreen Park at 3149 W. 102nd St. In the livingroom was a mint 1969 Zenith french provincial console priced at $30.00. Its a 16Z8C50 chassis set, still plugged in, wired to the outdoor antenna and of course still working. I'm still blown away to find TV's like this survive in someone living room for over 40 years virtually untouched. The set is near mint and its another one of those TV's that never got used.

Another sale in Oak Park, at 1221 Edmer Ave. It happened yet again, I walk into the house and here in the living room sits a 1972 Zenith danish modern console with the bonus of space command 600... This is a really neat set, it has the 25CC50 chassis and another one that still plugged in, wired up to the antenna and working fine. Ironically I went to this sale to find something else, I just happened to stumble across this set which was very nice surprise.

Doug, what were they getting on the TV connected to an antenna? :scratch2: I thought all analog TV was to have disappeared by now, unless the Chicago area still has one or more NTSC analog stations. The networks all went digital and HD some time ago, so any remaining analog stations would almost have to be independents.

The fact that the TV's were still in existance and still in living rooms in good working condition after 40+ years means they were never used. That being said, I don't find it at all of a surprise to see the old sets still wired up to outdoor antennas because they never watched these TV's in the first place so there was no reason to connect them to a DTV box. These TV's just sat there and rarely, if ever got turned on. I guess these people enjoyed spending their free time doing other things in life such as reading for example, or they had another room to watch TV.

With most of those older people, there was no eating in the "front room". When small portables become popular, they had one in the kitchen and they did most of their viewing there. The living room was for guests.

That's very true. Last year, I bought a house that was built in 1973. Virtually nothing had been done to the house since it was built, and every room was worn out and completely trashed except for the formal dining room and living room. Those two rooms were like a time capsule. Even the original gold shag carpet was in excellent condition. We've kept them completely original and are using them as our every day living room and dining room. I'm sure the original owners would not be happy to see people eating and watching movies in there!

I just bought a shag rug, and I love it. No wonder it was so popular in the 1960's and 1970's.

My grandmother's house, like most houses of the 1960's and 1970's, used to have a shag rug throughout the living room. However, she didn't have it that long because it would get so dirty, between food and other particles getting caught in there. She eventually ripped it out and just has a wooden floor now. She also claimed that it was "too 60's," which is something I would have liked.

It does not (directly) matter whether a station was network or independent. It matters whether the station was licensed as full-service (ordered to meet certain requirements, assured carriage on cable and satellite, and protected from interference) or low power (easy to own, but not protected from interference, usually not carried on cable, and liable to be shut down to make way for another full-service station, or another service that may need its channel).

Full-service stations (e.g: 3, 5, 8, 19, 25, 43, 55, 61) were required to shut off their analog by the end of 6/12/09, but analog LPTV stations (e.g., 35, 51, 53, 64, 65) were allowed to continue for what was an indefinite time (but has since been set for a 9/1/2015 shutoff).

Of course, any network would rather have a full-service station as its affiliate than an LP, but there were a few LP major network affiliates out there, as well as many full-service independent stations.

Chicago still has several analog LPTV stations.
