Since it's a projection set, my money's on the convergence. Sometimes there is a board of adjustments, but it is hard to correct if the set has been damaged or the convergence IC is bad.

Since it's a projection set, my money's on the convergence. Sometimes there is a board of adjustments, but it is hard to correct if the set has been damaged or the convergence IC is bad.

I had (until this week) a similar set, a KFE42A10. It developed the same problem, a blue smear at the bottom of the screen. Researching this elsewhere, it seems the only repair is a replacement of the light engine which is very pricey (upwards of $800).

However, I discovered two things of interest. First, the blue was not bad, almost nonexistent, after the set was first turned on, and only got worse with time used, which indicated to me that it was heat-related. The second thing I found was after selling the set to someone to whom I pointed out the problem, and who had no difficulty with buying it despite that. When the set was removed from the stand where it sat for all its life (a melamine-covered MDF thing), there were melt marks in the melamine from the heat the thing generated. I was astounded by that, because that took a lot of heat.

If your blue comes and goes with use, see if perhaps you can elevate the set slightly to get some air moving under it and keep it cooler.

Verdict is in..Light engine @ a MSRP of $1060..The 3 year maint.agreement paid off this time..
