Got this set back from a neighbor who I gave this to a year or two ago. It was passed through a few family members who needed a color set, and now it's back home as it was no longer needed. Funny but I didn't even remember it!

This is a Motorola CP401FW, made in Japan, and yep, she's got tubes :D . Has a 14" viewable area on the picture tube, and it's in pretty good shape, still works well according to my neighbor, but I haven't since plugged it in yet.

Well I decided to throw the plug in the wall to see what would happen....

Weird, but on stations with a weak signal, it works fine, but strong signals make the screen bloom and go dark, starting in the center first as a blackout across the raster and eventually it darkens the screen. Time to check some tubes.

Here's a shot on a weaker station, still pretty good :)

Aint no way in hell I'm working on this set, part three.....

I can't see any way to get this thing out of the cabinet, and I ain't about to try to get my hands in there

Not that I'm even close to being a good TV repairman, but I'm gonna stick to black and whites and easy stuff :)

The CP401FW 14" color portable Retailed for 329.95 per my June '69 dealer price list.
I saw two of those models come in the shop I worked at years ago with numerous problems. I don't remember us repairing either one of them.
Would be fun to see what is wrong with yours.

If I were to hazard a guess, your AGC control might be overadjusted. Try backing it off on a strong station.

If not, perhaps problems in the AGC circuit. Tube?

Not enough! I must own them all!! Ok, I'm all right now...
I am trying to have an example of each of their portable and console models from 1965 to 1970. Already have the years 1971-1974 done.

I remember that set.....my sister and brother in law had one, I spent the night at their house and watched the Space Shuttle Columbia fly for the first time on that set back around, when was it, 1980?

Thanks Eric, I have that model already. That was one of the first Motorola sets that I got back in the late seventies when getting into collecting.

I got it going a few months ago, Had to change a 'lytic and resolder some connections as well as clean the tuner.
It shows a real nice picture now.
