The only tv ive ever bought brand new was a 21"? magnavox in september of 99. You basic bigger bpc set. It lasted about 8 months and then would shut off after playing for ten seconds. I took it in and woops, it was just over its six month warranty.
I dont know if it counts but in 2004 my lil bro decided to buy a 52" sony hdtv (before id even heard of hd) and of course he couldnt afford it, so a few months after i took it from him and made the payments. A true pile of junk. Within a year there were burn in lines on the screen where you could almost read the guide menu youd change to, to change settings.

I bought our first color set in Dec., 1965. It was a Motorola console with the ETS908 28 tube chassis. $625 out the door. I went to buy the less expensive table model, but the dealer said they wont be available until after Christmas. In hindsight, I'm glad it turned out this way. That small chassis wasn't that great. Ran it ten years untill the 23EG started to look sick. Never put a soldering iron to it. Everyone commented how good the picture was. When we quit using it, it still had the original horizontal output tubes in it.

You are so lucky. The Motorola we bought in 1968 had 3 replacement 23" CRT's in 2 years. When #3 gave out, it was over. Dad had enough of this.

Re: Sandy's parent's electric service "event", this is good information
Dieseljeep: You totally right on with the neutral failure. Where multiple houses share a transformer and each houses main breaker box is grounded to common (metallic) water service, a neutral could rip loose at the service head without unbalancing voltages. A single service or no common ground and this is a dangerous situation. The neutral from the utility transformer passes through the meter base box (owned by YOU - not the utility), which is exposed to weather. There is no gasket behind the meter (surprise) and the neutral terminal can corrode and fail without symptoms other than an unbalanced voltage which can vary WILDLY if a heavy load is applied to one phase, such as window AC compressor starting. This has been known to trash MOV's in surge suppressor strips and outlets. BTW the Sony KV-5000 was a heavy one - I delivered dozens in 1985-6.... with help. They were "Cadillac" at the time - with Mitsubishi being the "Lincoln". |

Saved up my allowances for a year and bought a 1995 Zenith 19" Sentry 2. Bought new at Lechmere for $265 in July of 1995. Still my main tv, never had a problem with it.
Sadly, the box got ditched the day I bought it because it wouldn't fit in my moms car that way, and the instruction manuals/purchase receipt were accidently thrown out in a move a few years ago. Original remote control is long gone. Broken/chewed on by pet dog. TV itself is still going strong. |

Mine is/was a 2002 vintage Panasonic CT-27D32F that just lost the plot this month.Did everything I ever asked of it, and still performed well enough to show just how awful today's digitally processed programming is.
I figured a new set after 22 years of marriage watching hand-me-downs and self repaired discards was appropriate. You will be seeing a plea for repair assistance elsewhere in this Forum soon. I hope the reception here will be a bit more personable than the one received at another to remain un-named forum.<G> I REALLY want to keep a CRT set alive. RJ |

The first set I bought new was my LG 26LC7D bought new in 2007 with a bonus from work. It has been a good set so far, no issues and has a good picture with an HD source like OTA digital or my Sony media player box, it also works good as a VGA monitor when playing with PC's The LG replaced a Sony KX-2501 "Profeel" set that I had for years. Gave the Sony to a friend who is still using it AFAIK.

The only TV I ever paid myself to buy new, was a 27" CRT high definition TV with a 4:3 picture tube.
But the first TV I ever had new (but not purchased by me) was a 13" RCA XL-100 Remote. (Yea, "Remote" is part of the model name.. It's BPC stuff, required already a transistor to be replaced, when it was only 8 years old. But I replaced it myself and diagnosed myself so I was proud, cause at the time I did the replacement, I wasn't even 18 yet. |

I think the first one I bought new was one I got about 5 years ago. I got it when my old one from the 70s gave out. Before that I have always got junk ones and fixed them up. The only reason I didn't with this one was I have been too busy over the last few years to fix any. Maybe I can change that soon.

First TV I ever bought on my own was in '82 or '83......was the Unisonic 929 little "briefcase" boombox thing. I still have it, and have been into it a couple times for some vertical issues, replaced a belt or two in it's cassette mech, Still looks and plays okay even today. I have to run it on a 12V wall wart now because Hong Kong is 240v...and I didn't feel like getting into it again to see if there is a 240/120 switch inside.
It's a 5" B/W set with AM/FM and cassette. You have probly seen one just like it maybe a hundred times back in the eighties. I think the company that "really" made it was TMK (Troyomenko or somesuch). Almost at the same time...I also got a Panasonic TR-1010. That little 1" set was REAL expensive back then, but it ran right up until about a year ago. It also had a real minor vertical issue maybe seven or eight years ago and I had fixed it. It now sits next to a "donor" set in a Kleenex box coffin after losing it's tuner.

First and only TV I've ever purchased new was '97 32" JVC. It still is the third newest set in the house, behind a '98 Zenith and a recently acquired '02 Sony XBR, both curb finds. All daily drivers.

First TV I bought new was a table top 1974 Hitachi 17 inch--a CE-725 model. It had a wood grain cabinet and I remember thinking it was really attractive looking. I'd love to find a photo of it somewhere. The next tv after that was a 1984 Sony KV 1924 which worked well for 27 years. I wish I still had it
