I started on the radio chassis this evening. After taking the usual pictures, I gathered all the capacitors and resistors.
As usual, I restuffed the 1 dual E-Cap and installed it. I then noticed that this chassis uses 2 Couplates! Centralab PC-81. Looks like I'll be making some new couplates. Tomorrow my grandson is coming over and he likes to solder so he'll help me with the recap. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

I believe there would be no problem with ceramic disc capacitors. MLCC are multilayer ceramic capacitors. However I would select disc caps with fairly high voltage rating, maybe 500V or more.

Also want temp stable IIRC C0G rated parts.

Does anyone have any reference books for couplates?
I have been looking online and have yet to find much info on them beyond individual breakdowns on the schematics. I would love to find a manual that had all of the values listed through part numbers. |

okay thanks
I'm not a fan of these couplates/PECs/modules whatever you call em. I do make my own but they aren't nearly as nice as the OP's. |

This radio has one of these things in it. Seeing I have no documentation, what is it? I think it must be a transformer or some type of matching network.

I believe it is exactly what you think. I've seen that exact style a couple times before, they normally don't fail so I usually ignore them.
IIRC some were used as mains power noise suppression chokes, but I think I have seen that style in other applications.

I believe the item in question is the local oscillator coil

Makes sense! Thanks.

Well, it's got two windings, and since there's no other item above or below the chassis resembling an oscillator coil, it's just about gotta be the osc coil.
Edit. OOPs y'all already nailed it. |

Well, it plays after recapping. My grandson came over and helped with about 75% of it. He did pretty good.
It'll need a good alignment and tomorrow I'll work on the details like cleaning and lubing the tuning cap, increase dial cord tension, etc.

Your welcome . Anytime I can help someone who does such great work on the restorations that you do I am truly happy to help . I've read your "Galloping Ghost" work over at RCU and you have serious electronic skills !

I spent the day making up some boards for the Couplates. I also made up some boards for the Vertical Intergrator so I now have some spare of each.
After making up the boards I assembled the 2 that I needed to finish this radio. I installed them and then did another check of the radio. It worked well even though it hasn't been aligned. ![]() ![]()

Wow looks amazing! Great job! Bet it will play better than when it was new! Those couplates must take some time to make.
