Philco 49-1040 restoration

The last item to paint was the screen surround trim.

I sanded down the old paint then masked it off from the outside. That way I could spray from the inside. Mush easier than trying to mask and spray from the front.
The Ivory Bisque turned out too bright so I switched to Navajo White.


So that's that!
Now, I just need to make it work

I recently saw a classified ad for a 49-1040 parts set. Only problem - local pickup much too far away. Luckily, the seller was nice enough to remove the channel plate plus tuner and ship them They just arrived today.

The channel plate is a slightly different style, but it's in better condition. Also, much easier to spruce up because the lines and lettering are recessed. A little white paint rubbed in will do the trick.

Personally, I do like the original gold paint screened one, but I'll go with the donor one for now.


I don't know if the new tuner will work any better, but it certainly is cleaner. Also, I now have a complete set of channel plug-in modules - plus plenty of spares


I noticed the front modules (osc?) are all correct 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13 but the rear modules are scrambled. I wonder if someone was playing games ?
Here channel 3 and 11 are mixed.

Bob, what's wrong with the tuner?

There's not a lot to go wrong, a lot of the sensitive parts are located on the removable strips.

On my 1280 I removed the tuner to replace the rubber mounts, (record player motor mounts work perfect) while it was out I completely disassembled it and cleaned it.

I washed that dirty area in our parts washer at work, everything in there is pretty well sealed or made of plastic and reasonably impervious to a brief hosing down.

Sorry, should have been clearer. I don't know that there's anything wrong with the existing tuner. It's just dirty, rusty and missing a couple modules.

I'll definitely try cleaning and using the original one first and pick any bits I might need from the spare.

Thanks for the tip about the mounts. I think they might work in my Philco 60 radio too. Better order up a bunch.

Speaking of mounts... As I feared the weight of that power transformer mushed down the new chassis mount in that corner. I'll shim it up with some hard rubber strip insulation.
