Expected lifetime of new TV sets

I have 3 old tv's that have been in the family since new. All are sony and none have ever had any kind of service and still work today.

1 19" Sony Manufactured 1982 pre-remote
1 13" Sony Manufactured 1985 KV-1370R working remote
1 19" Sony Manufactured 1985 KV-1972R working remote

I still have the original receipts for 2 of them and I see that they were VERY expensive. The oldest one was over $800 as a demo unit way back in 1982. The 13" was over $500 and the newer 19" was close to $1000. They sure were built to last but you sure paid for it.

as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. but the chinese arnt letting us have our choices on this anymore though

The best set I ever had was a 1972 Zenith dura-module set.

Other than an occasional cleaning, the set STILL works at my friends place.

The second longest was an 80's Emerson 13" TV that my mom left on 14 hours a day, every day. I shot the picture tube once with my sencore 6 years ago. It finally smoked the flyback a few months ago. At this point I retired it.

I still have my 1975 Panasonic 12" B/W set. I used it so much when I was a kid, that I replaced the CRT about 18 years ago. I just had an attachment to it. It was the first REAL thing I ever bought. Still works. It was a limited edition set with an instant-on touch pad instead of the old click switch. It was soooo cool in 75.

Ahh, well.

I still use a 9" LC CRT projector in my den. The best picture hands down on a 110" screen.

But I must confess, I have switched to a 42" plasma in the bedroom for size versus space considerations. The Plasma was free, needing a power supply. A lizard shorted it out. So far it's running great, but I don't expect much in terms of life.

We'll see.
