It's a shame that Floyd gets accused of "drug induced noodling" all the time, simply because the people that may have enjoyed their music back then were so identifiable with drug culture.

Something I've always prided myself on is being able to differentiate between things that I'm just not into and things that suck. I'm not into Miles Davis, but that doesn't mean he sucks.

Call me overly defensive, but as a professional musician, I have often been accused of being a druggy or a lowlife simply because I play a guitar for my paycheck, and that's a very narrow minded and judgmental way of thinking.

No offense meant to anyone, just my non-drug induced ramblings.

An excellent point. I don't think the Three Stooges are funny but it's obviously absurd to tell someone laughing at them that they're not funny. Usually I take care to couch my opinions as such---"I think Pink Floyd sucks" or "to me Charlton Heston is a cigar-store Indian of an actor"---rather than as a statement of objective fact. When it comes to entertainment one person's taste is as valid as another's.

On the other hand we can have a little fun with these guys too, they DO put themselves in the public eye afterall.

Definately sad that the drug addiction got control over Barrett, and not that Barrett got control of the drug addiction.

I'd like to add one thing though- demonizing the drug use is the simple way to quantify the problem.

Many folks- musicians, lawyers, artists, professors- are able to keep the use to either a low-impact, or to beneficial use, much as the casual drinker who has a scotch at a wedding or a Bahama Mama when on a cruise to the Cayman Islands.

It's unfortunate that it's so easy to cross the line into abuse.


Back to Pink floyd- indeed, I've never perceived them as a bunch of "stoned, 24-7" artists as I just couldn't comprehend anyone functioning at such an artistic level if always glued to a bottle or some other method of mind alteration. Sure, maybe a "vacation" or "travel" within one's mind on occasion, for inspiration or to peek in those doors of alternate perception, but not 24-7.

While I don't like everything Floyd has done , DSOM is , for me , a tremendous work. I saw David Gilmour at the Candy Store in Ft. Lauderdale many years ago and it stands out as one of the best musical experiences of my life. I'm sure a few folks copped a buzz while listening to Pink Floyd over the years but I can't take away from their abilities based on that. Perhaps the lunatic is in my head......

He was also mentally ill. Dosing on LSD or even drinking alot is going to intensify such a state of mind. Had Syd been less of an imbiber, he might have logged in a few more years with Floyd. But I would guess that the mental illness would have nailed him sooner or later. The life of a rock star, clean or not, would have collided with his state of mind.

Note that after he was clean and in a controlled environment, he actually had a calm, if uneventful life. He was lucky to have a family that could care for him. All those homeless you see on the street? Those are other Syd Barretts.

A fascinating person, he was.
