Hey everyone, there is a good chance that I'll never get to fix the iMac. I live in Escondido, a suburb in the North County of San Diego. Right now in San Diego we are going through some extreme fire, at the moment there are 7 fires burning.
http://www.10news.com/index.html That's our local news. Escondido is right between two fires, and the other side of town has suffered the loss of a few houses. I truly doubt the fire will reach my house, in the middle of the city, but the way things are going right now, anything can happen. There's some very strong winds keeping the fire alive and they show no sign of slowing down for at least the next two days. If we are forced to evacuate, and my friend two blocks down says they are being put into voluntary evacuation, I will have to leave everything behind. The only things I can take are my HP tower, my laptop, and some clothes, then we're outta here. Everyone 6 blocks north of my house has been put on mandatory evacuation. This has nothing to do with flybacks, TV's, or computers, but I just needed to tell someone, anyone, about this. I'm hoping for the best, and I believe everything will turn out OK. On the bright side, I got out of taking a test in Geometry today No school.

Thanks radiotvnut. The news have been talking about the fires nonstop since about 10pm last night, they don't even stop for commercials.

I'm glad to say it looks like everything is going to be OK for me, we came close to being evacuated but things look to be calming down a bit. Things aren't so great for San Diego as a whole though, I'm not sure how many homes have burned but I do know it's at least 1,000, it's very sad to watch all those beautiful houses burning down but it feels even worse knowing someone, somewhere is now homeless. One of the news anchors lost his home, you could hear his voice breaking as he talked about it on the local news, I feel unbelievably lucky that we didn't even have to evacuate while thousands of others are now homeless.
My aunt was not so lucky; her house is now gone. It burned to the ground Sunday night, they went back today and absolutely nothing is left, a few items they managed to recognize were some pots and pans that survived. The house was not theirs, it belonged to my uncle's employer, but they had lived there for over 20 years. It's in a ranch and is surrounded by avocado and orange trees (the local industry is farming), all of which were destroyed. On the bright side, they lived in the employer's house (the local avocado company) but they also own a house so they have somewhere to go. They had this awesome late 1980's-early 1990's (who knows, I'll never be able to check now) Trinitron TV, along with a bookshelf loaded with VHS movies, a huge stack full of family photos, and my uncle's garage full of tools (he loved messing with cars). All gone. That house had been standing for over 100 years, and overnight, it was gone. Really shows us that we are nothing compared to mother nature. For some reason that old school Trinitron really gets me, I'd always wanted to take a closer look at it and now it's gone. It's the TV I stared at when my cousin and I would play when we were only 6 or 7, I remember watching The Mummy on it back when that movie was "the bomb", watching Titanic when it was first released as 3 VHS tapes (or was it two?), in fact I have a ton of memories of the house itself, it's a shame that we last visited a few months ago, when I stepped out the door I had no idea it would be the last time I walked out of there. We're all devastated but at the same time, things could have been so much worse. There have only been two deaths out of all the fires going on, there are plenty of evacuation centers still open, and everyone's donating a ton of stuff and helping out. It's great to know how many good people there are out there, through all the crap that happens in the world and all the negativity everywhere, when something like this happens everyone pulls together. Well, I'm out of here, our electricity has been flickering once or twice and it's a miracle we still have water, power, internet, and cable. Thanks everyone. Oh and the flyback shipped yesterday |

It all seems like a world away to me. I can't really imagine fires like that. Life can certainly take a turn very fast.

The flyback arrived today! I'll be doing the swap tomorrow. It's got a manufacture date of July 7, 2004. Does anyone know if they are still actually manufactured? Also I'd love to know who made it and where it's made but there are only two stickers on it, one with 6174Z-1003G and another with 2004.07.07, it also says PY040618. I can't wait to do the swap, but it's almost 8PM and Radio Shack is closed, I need to buy some solder braid to do the desoldering. Flybacks are so cool! I've never seen one in it's brand new state before.

Oh no....
the replacement fly has 10 pins, the original has 12. All the pins that make an U shape are there, but on the replacement two pins above the U are missing. On the iMac chassis, they are both labeled as "Dyna". |

It's possible that those pins aren't used on the original flyback. Dyna may stand for dynamic focus which a 15" monitor might not need. Is it an original replacement, or a generic? If it otherwise fits, I would be tempted to try it.

I'm pretty sure it's generic, here's the link where I got it from:
http://www.bluestar-online.com/6174Z...174z-1003g.htm It doesn't say anything about being an original. I was thinking the same thing, maybe the pins on the original are just there as extra support for the weight of the flyback or something. Otherwise, the pins are the same. I guess we will find out tomorrow. The replacement does not look as quality as the original, also is it possible the picture will look different with the replacement or should it look the same before and after? |

For the most part, I've had good luck with generic flybacks. Often, a generic is all that's available. Companies love to discontinue original parts as fast as they can these days. I do remember changing the flyback in an RCA (CTC179 chassis) 36" set. It took the longest time to get the pins lined up on the cheap generic before it would go in the board. When I finally got it installed, the set played great for two hours that night. When I hit the power button the next morning; I heard a big BANG followed by smoke and a foul odor. You guessed it. That cheap generic flyback went up in smoke. I tracked down an RCA original and had no more problems.
If your flyback has controls on it for focus and screen; you will have to adjust those for a satisfactory image. |

Funny, this vendor has no sub for RCA P/N 79012. Waaah. Maybe I could use an LCD illumination kit and make my 15GP22 light up the new-fashioned way!

I've had about 50/50 luck with generics. Most work, but quite often there are differences in performance. Things like too much, or too little width, poor HV regulation, or focus that's out of range are the most common problems. Occasionally they don't work at all.

The swap was a complete success! I'm writing this from the iMac right now. Taking the old flyback off took a while but with some flux and a solder sucker, I managed to do it in about an hour. Flux smells terrible, by the way. The new flyback was slightly larger than the original but it fit, I adjusted the screen/focus and now the screen looks great! Look slightly better than before, regulation is the same as before, and now the screen does not flicker! I discharged the CRT by grounding a screwdriver to the ground strap, but I didn't get any snaps/crackles, I'd read somewhere that the iMac has a bleeder resistor and I guess it works
I was really hoping for some noise. This swap was a complete success, even with the two pins missing on the replacement. I was surprised to see that the entire iMac sans the motherboard/cpu tray is LG. The monitor chassis and the PSU are both clearly marked LG, along with the CRT and (original) flyback.

Good to hear. Hopefully the new flyback will last at least as long as the old one did.
You might want to get a desoldering iron. They work MUCH better then a solder sucker. You could desolder a flyback in under 10 minutes with one of those. Here's a pic of what I'm talking about.
