Yeah, Carmine, we are digressing a bit. I gotta quit readin' so many books! Except for my last comment I've tried to keep the discussion related to tubes and radio. With a name like "Airflow" its a bit hard to forget the aerodynamics of such a car. (I wonder what kind of radios they had? )

Its really too bad the Airflows didn't sell better than they did-they really were ahead of their times. Chrysler did have a line of more "conventionally" styled cars along side the Airflows' 1934-37 run. By '38, most cars had incorporated the rounded styling of the Airflows, & they were beginning to look "dated" by then, anyhow, as there had been little styling changes in them since the beginning, except for minor trim reshufflings. The Airflow I'd love to have would be the Imperial CU-8 passenger version, very, very rare. But I ain't picky..If the opportunity presented itself, I'd happily "Make Do" w/a lowly Dodge or DeSoto 2 door version...

Taking this back to an old radio theme, Major Bowes (of radio fame) was driven about the country in an Airflow Imperial for his show, much like the one Sandy describes. You can read more at this link:

Major Bowes Airflow Imperial

Sandy, the other more conventional line was called the "Airstream", and you won't find an Airflow Dodge... Imperial, Chrysler and Desoto were the only models to use the more advanced Airflow chassis.

Yeah, Carmine, my bad...I've read about that Major Bowes Imperial...But had never seen detailed pix of it. Except for one "Elderly Gentleman in Reduced Circumstances" type example, I've never seen an Airflow in poison that I can remember.

The 1960 Chevy Corvair, GM's first unibody car, went on sale to the public in October of 1959.

The Olds Toronado was GM's first front wheel drive car. I believe it came out in '67.

The 1960 model Ford Falcon came out in 1959 also, about the same time as the Corvair. It is the same as the 1963 model, with only cosmetic changes.

The Toro came out in Fall '65 as a '66 model...Caddy used basically the same chassis & inner body for their version, the Eldorado, in '66, as a '67 model. Buick used it, too, for their Riviera, but they went w/a conventional RWD chassis... These cars were in production, w/basically only minor cosmetic changes til the '71 model year, the next time GM changed their "Standard Car" bodies. They were pretty much smash hits, the Eldo garnering sales of nearly 18K copies he 1st year-a remarkable showing for a "premium" car.

I was born in 1956. I was fortunate to tangle with 2 guys in my life that were BIG in 1) motion pictures, production, sound, and projection systems, and 2) a guy that was a walking encyclopedia on the history of broadcast television and radio in america.

When each of these guys died, I received the lions share of each of their hobbies: 16mm films, equipment, etc, and broadcast quality audio equipment, microphones, speakers, tube amps, a complete 16mm color RCA TK-28 film chain with projectors, and lots of new spare color camera tubes.

My source of income is from what I learned from the film guy. I work for a major theatre chain.

My love of things old come from the other guy. I love restoring old radios and anything with tubes.

I have 2 Webcor wire recorders that are re-capped and nice.

I drive an Olds Toronado built in 1985... the last year they used the front-facing V8 engine in the configuration. In 1986, the engine was turned sideways. It's a fine old car, and still totally dependable, with a newly rebuilt 4-speed (with overdrive) automatic transmission. Its still a regular driver for me.

I love this forum. You guys are great. I am sorry that I have not been around here more. There's been alot happening in my world lately, but things are getting better now.

I was given a Thomas cathedral radio today by a friend that genuinely thought it was an antique. I didnt have the heart to tell him. I've heard about this old antique radio from him for years, and was surprised when he told me he was giving it to me.

I think it was built around 1982 or so. The little cassette player in the side gave it away, not to mention the plastic parts.
