Also The Night of the Hunter, directed by Charles Laughton and starring, in an unforgettable turn, Robert Mitchum. The original version of Cape Fear, too, with Peck & Mitchum.

"Knife in the Water." Probably a silly movie (saw it forty years ago, so don't really remember what it was about) but you could frame scene after scene as still photos.

Lost Horizon from 1937 is a remarkable film. Meet John Doe also excellent, as is Billy Wilders' Double Indemnity. Key Largo, rollicking. And the unforgettable groundbreaking film The Best Years of our Lives. But there are so many of them. It's like choosing which Ferrari to drive on Sunday. The silver screen was truly sterling then.

"Paths of glory" a great anti war movie. The trench warfare scenes were vivid and riveting;more effective in instilling fear than those from "All quiet on the Western Front".
