That's interesting Kaye, I'll check into that model # for 1st Trinitron, even according to Sony company history archives, that model # you gave is not there first Trinitron, maybe a different tv?? Trinitrons were introduced in 1968. I have seen a kv-1500 that preceeds a kv-1510.

P.S. That model# Does check out with Sams, does ANYBODY have a picture of this TV??

I have one of those little Trinitrons. My dad got it at Hammacher Schlemmer in New York in fall '69. It is currently at another AKer's being fixed. It has at least one tube in it besides the CRT. As far as I know, Sony never officially imported those guys into the US- Hammacher Schlemmer was sort of an upscale dept store that specialised in being the "first" to carry stuff. It had a GLORIOUS picture-the only other color set we had was a Porta-Potty. The GE wasn't even in the same league as the Sony.

Is that the VHF, or might the VHF be on the Rt side and the one showing is UHF? That tube does look a bit different, but I can't tell for sure. I think my set had a rounder-sided tube than the photo on my service manual looks to be. I wonder if mine was the Chromatron? Seems to me it said nothing about Trinitron on it, even though the manual shows that it does. But mine was so banged up, that the trim piece where TRINITRON should be may have been missing.

Regarding Sony longevity: we bought a KV-1212 (or 1215) in 1973 or '74 and used it for 25 years, then gave it to one of my wife's younger workmates who'd just gotten married. They are still using it, quite happily. IIRC, I did nothing to it except clean the tuner sometime in the '80s. I do think the picture lost contrast over time, though.

The crt is on borrowed time in modern tvs.Sony ,Zenith and several manufacturers are ceasing to make or have already stopped making crt based tvs.Eventually you won't be able to buy a new set with crt technology.

That's probably true, but it looks like some manufacturers are continuing to develop new CRT types, such as those new Samsung "Slimfit" tubes. I don't know what the deflection angle is on those, but from seeing those sets in the store, I'd say those things easily have the shortest depth for the size I've ever seen for a color CRT, and I think those are all flat-face tubes to boot.

Probably true for consumer TV, but I think we'll see CRTs in industrial and government applications for decades to come. One of my collector friends who works as a tech at Edwards Air Force Base pointed out that the US Government still uses 10BP4s in some military applications, and 21FJP22s too! They both have current catalogue numbers as of January 2006. Tax dollars at work!
