Glad you took the prize Dave. Maybe I’ll use the six bucks to help finance a trip to the Borgata buffet in AC.
Sometime soon after the PortaColor was introduced, I told my (then friendly) in-laws about it, and they got one of the original tube sets. It served them well into the seventies, replaced finally with a 13-in. Zenith. As you say, up close, the screen was anything but sharp, but from a couple of feet away, the course dot-pitch CRT morphed into a beaut of a color picture. Pete

Yeah, we had one of the early ones-it stayed on about 18/7 & we never had any trouble w/it-and we have REAL hot "juice" here-123-127 volts, due to being about 5 miles from a TVA "steam plant"-but it didn't seem to bother the l'il fella.-Sandy G.

Happy with TV???
I noticed on Eby picture, cabinet looks distorted. Did cabinet melt from tube heat or just shape of cabinet?? Happy with TV?????

The set is in fine shape and yes does have a warp behind the tuner on top. Early 70's version with the stripe tube. It has enough color for two more sets, but the lack of DC restoration makes viewing an adventure. Using the color level at a lower setting seems to help. Grey scale needed adjusting and is now fine through the brightness range. The fine tuner is sticky at first until some heat sets it free. Old grease I guess.
No success yet with a picture. Any light to show the cabinet washes out the screen. I'll keep trying. Dave A

Warped Cabinet
Sometimes warping like that is caused during the molding process and not excessive tube heat, especially since the tuner does not generate much heat. I have often thought I had a crack in a plastic radio or tv cabinet only to look at another example and see the exact same mark in the same place. Turns out it is just a mark from the mold.

Screen shot...I hope
Let's see if this works. Screen shot a few days ago from the Porta Color. And the screwdriver on the counter is green Catalin. My best tweeker. It fell out of a RCA 621 I bought along with a Taft for president button.
And the warp is genuine heat induced. Not from the tuner, but from another source on the chassis. Have not even cracked the back yet. Dave A
