Two of the Sony units that i've used for this are the SLV-EZ725 and the 735.
Not sure what their American equivalents are. If you are familiar with the workings it is the chassis that cracks a little blue centre gear near the clutch which causes all sorts of issues. Not hard to replace but does give the whole VCR a somewhat limited lifespan.

That's not nice, I was planning to use the VCR playing tapes too.
What kind of issue do the '80s Panasonics have with MV? My PN VCR just cycles between dark and light when passing through signals with MV.

Can't quite remember, got rid of that machine quite a while ago, sick of sinking money into it (power supply, main clutch [again], wear in loader and capstan bearing [G mech]) but suffice to say that the result was un-watchable.
Also on that particular unit whenever plugs were inserted into the AV jacks, they were automatically prioritised, ie the tuner did not work until you pulled the plugs out, rather annoying, so we bought the Sony. This particular Sony has not had the issue with the gear, have repaired other units with this. But it doesn't get much use where it is these days.
