RCA T-120 for $50 BIN

I picked up the T120 today. As soon as I go it home I pulled out the chassis. I have two questions now:

#1 At the end of the 12LP4's neck (right before the socket connects to the pins) there is a black plastic ring. This ring is loose. Brown crusty stuff is falling out from under this ring. What the heck is this, and more importantly, how do I fix it (if I even can)? Does the brown crusty stuff mean the tube is ruined?

#2 The cabinet itself has a transparent piece of plastic that covers the picture tube. It has a moderate gouge in it. What would be the best way to try to buff it out without hurting the case.

I think you might mean the base cap of the tube is loose, the brown crusty stuff is the glue that held it on.

Being loose won't hurt it unless it was hit hard enough to break the tube underneath or if one or more of the wires broke off.

Best advice, leave it alone for now, handle it very carefully to avoid pulling it off or flexing it and breaking the wires. A tight wrap of Black Electrical tape to keep it in place would be a good idea.

Use extreme care when sliding it in and out of the Yoke, support it with one hand when installing the socket.
