The transition away from NTSC had lots of drawbacks, but I think this is the one that upsets me the most - portability!
Here is a Magnavox Perfect View color portable with am/fm. Has video input and external antenna connection - from May 1988. It is labeled N.A.P but was made in Taiwan, R.O.C. - still a great performer - or was at least until the transition. I have seen the same set with the RatShack label, excepting in silver color case. This little gem has a great picture - clear and bright and crisp and free from grain - a problem that seems to plague small color portables. It is powered with a wall wart at 12 vdc or with D cells. If I could find a converter powered at 12 vdc I would like to try hardwiring it to the battery power supply, velcro it to the bottom of the set, and use the built in telescoping antenna and try it out - sure would be nice for power outages. The GF bought one of those no name 9" lcd atsc tuned portable sets - a helluva waste of $90.00. Last edited by RobtWB; 08-03-2010 at 11:10 PM.

That's a neat set, I totally agree about the portability of DTV......uggghh. They want you to spend hundreds now on "flo tv" or whatever the overpriced crap is, then you have to pay to watch the damn thing. I looked at the ATSC portables too and was horrified at what garbage they are. Right when you think things couldn't get any cheaper or crappier....BAM! they raise the bar again and surprise me.

Check out the 7" MyGoTv ATSC portable. I have one and it is one of the few modern portables that is actually well built. It even has a swappable Li-ion battery on the back. Here's the link: www.mygotv.com

The RCA 12" "Sportables" from the 70's have a base with a battery pack inside, they also run off of 120v or 12v DC from a car.
The built in battery packs could be removed leaving plenty of room for a converter in the base, You would probably have to remove the converter from it's case of course.

That 9" Sylvania that I brought back from SC has a large battery compartment in it's base that I'm sure would hold a converter. The only problem is that I'd have to add a hole to the front of the battery box for the IR sensor.
