Hmmmpf...I thought we settled the cap issue once 'n' for all around 1965 when they (ostensibly) quit using those dreadful wax 'n' paper blivvets...Why izzit that if there's a GOOD way to do something, & a cheap 'n' nasty way, do mfgers invariably choose the predictable one ? Can't entirely be an issue of cost, what with what you hafta shell out for one of these thaings...

Interesting article on Wiki about Capacitors.
Seems Industrial Espionage was behind a lot of these Cap failures. I don't know how much of this is verified fact but I've seen my share of bad Motherboard capacitors: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague |

If it isn't poorly mixed electrolyte, it has to be the construction of new caps:
I just fixed an lcd monitor that had a bad backlight. All I had to do was drop in four new caps. The originals looked okay, but I could pull them right off the board with my fingers. The leads stayed behind on the board, but that made it easier for me to desolder each one. I've been finding these EZ-pull caps more and more on new stuff. I can't imagine that they work so great in keeping moisture out (or keeping electrolyte in). |

Turns out this problem was because of a loose connector evidently. I ended up re-seating all the connectors and cables in the unit, and the problem went away. Been working fine now ever since the day I posted this.
