Wouldn't surprise me, I've had it replaced twice over the years (i'ts 14+ yo). Not cheap to replace and I'll fail the emission test next time if I don't get it fixed.

I'll bring it over to my local guy - he has the gizmo to read the OBD codes.

IL has 2 emissions tests: OBD, and tailpipe. If your car is older than 1996 vintage, it will be a tailpipe test which is single speed (idle). The O2 sensor on most cars doesn't do anything until you're at cruising speed anyway, so if it's bad your idle shouldn't be affected and you should pass.

My car was the 1st gen to have OBD and a bad O2 sensor is automatic failure. I've been through that twice

Those have become quite valuable and sound wonderful. Note the ribbons are quite fragile, so whatever you do, don't blow into one!
