Didn't know that, Andy. That is good from a serviceability standpoint. Haven't cracked one open recently.
I have two DVD units besides my computers at the moment: One is a Magnavox (philips) DVD recorder with a VERY finicky interface; the thing is so slow to respnd. It does work nicely otherwise. The other player is a basic model JVC which I like.I've used it as a CD player in my audio system and it sounded really good. |

When dvd players first came out you could swap drives. But all the ones I have seen in the last few years have stripped down drives with some kind of nonstandard ribbon cable.

I've had a Panasonic DVD-A120PX since 2002, but it always had been a picky player - no CD-Rs, CD-RW, or DVD+Rs - though I like its menu graphics. My family has a low-end Sony DVP-NS325 that has lasted years (and is used 3+hours daily) without issue. Also, I have recently picked up a NOS Sony RDR-GX7 and I'm anticipating its failure - though I do like it's build quality.
One of the oddballs I had was a "Sansui" (Orion) VR-DVD2005 DVD recorder I picked up for a few bucks last year because of the non-functioning DVD recorder. Because of it's cheep layout, you could replace the original Pioneer DVD burner drive with any inexpensive IDE computer drive. Unfortunately, it had a LOT of shortcomings when it came to the interface (slooooowww, clunky, and awkward). Sold it a few months ago, which recouped for the drive that was replaced. I also had Funai-made Magnavox MWD-200F which I picked up as supposedly "broken" for $1 at a pawn and to my surprise, that thing worked well - so well that I gave it to a friend of mine, as his Apex decided to crap out (bad caps) after playing a couple of zombie movies. |
