Glad it's working out. For future reference, I just want to point out that the nameplate power rating may be a maximum expected number (so you can avoid overloading the house circuit), and not a typical number.

I think those resistors were a problem in old Chrysler products, but I don't know that it was the resistors fault. Not sure why they always went bad, but I know more than one person who kept a spare in the glovebox. Maybe they get overloaded?

So After the Tv tested fine.(Just 10 volts or so over)
I went to a junker. And pulled another 1 ohm resistor out of an oldsmobile or something. Hooked it up and things worked of coarse. But the fusible resistor installed originally in the TV is still getting rather hot. To hot to touch after 5 minutes or so, also the resistors I put in get warm. And they are LARGE. Is this more or less normal? Are the tubes in the TV supposed to be drawing this kind of current? It has 20 tubes in total including the pix tube. Oh and when I was searching for this resistor I found two other ones that were complete garbage, They looked okay. But after a couple taps to get the dirt out. The "filler" of the resistor came out to.. leaving bare wire that would definatley overload/overheat with real current. It made me laugh, but I also had to keep looking for another one. |

If you got the voltages so close to the spec, don't worry too much. For the fusible
resistor, it is marked 5 ohms on the schematic, so if the current is about 1.4 amps, dissipation is about 10 watts. This will definitely heat a resistor. As for the reliability problem of Chrysler ballast resistors, I think the environment inside a TV is not as harsh as under the hood of a car, you don't get so much moisture, etc., so if they work fine, you are all set. We'll keep up the original thread next week if you feel like it. Bye for now. And enjoy the set! Last edited by electroking; 10-04-2008 at 10:57 PM. Reason: corrected spelling |
