Finally got around to changing out those safety caps. I used what was quickly available - that being some Panasonic .0018uf @ 1.6kv metal-poly caps.

I posted a video on YouTube of this set in action. One thing that sticks out is the presence of what sounds like flyback whine - which is only heard in the video, you can't hear it standing there watching the set. Not sure why the camera hears it, but not my ears. The set does hum a little, sounds like 60 cycle hum, but it's only noticeable if the room is quiet.

The soft focus could be caused by a failing HV tripler. I've fixed many Zenith's of this vintage that either had marginal focus or the focus was optimum at the extreme end of the focus control range by replacing the tripler. Before you change the tripler, examine the CRT socket for corrosion around the focus pin.
