Actually, now open is more like flaky. I'm still going to replace it, but, I think something else is wrong. I suspect maybe vert. out. transformer may be shorted???

On yoke, this is an exact replacement RCA yoke. It plugs in to a socket on the side of hv cage.
I have now had to replace 15 out of 21 tubes....
I replaced bhe IF transformer I accidentally broke when chassis fell. It's fine. It actually plays better.

Some people have asked, so please see my new Avatar. This, folks, is my latest best friend added to my list of best friends.
This is Mike. He is a Chow mix with some Collie.
He is a very gentle, loving, kind dog, who is also well behaved..
John Folsom met him yesterday, and, ended up falling in love with him. Not hard considering hwo good Mike is.......

Now, on the tv.
John has given me alot of help on the last stumbling areas of the set, and, it looks like with some additional mods., the set will soon play again.
Unfortunately, this includes disconnecting the cathode from the filament of the orig. 6W4 damper socket, and, changing tube to a 6AU4. My new old stock 3,000 volt filament transformer failed, and, was arcing, and, blowing fuses.
Thank you very much for your help John. I look forward to getting it back playing soon.

Question

Now my concern is whether to use it, or, not. I'm afraid it isn't going to be reliable now.. Any opinions??

I'd trust it. I mean, it's half new parts at this point. It should be fine. Use it, enjoy it. I mean, what's the point in spending time and effort fixing something if you're not going to use it once it works? (Well, besides the fact that fixing things is fun). If you're just going to let it sit and never turn it on, then it might as well be broken like it was when you found it.

And, you probably have the circuit memorized at this point anyway. It will be easy to fix should something break. It should last for a good long time, and in the meantime, keep your eyes open for spare parts or parts chassis.

Use it!

John Folsom reports in e mails to me he has neatenned up connections by me, someone else, and, company.
Mistakes were made by all, especially me.
He had problems with it also.
Couple nights ago it went with a bang, and, flamed out two resistors.
My 3KV insulation, new old stock fil. transformer for damper failed. It was arcing internally.
He showed me pictures of it playing last night. I don't like the coarseness of the picture, however.
It still has other issues, as well.
He's going to align it today.
Still think something else is wrong.
Anyway, it's progress. Thanks, John.

My 721ts has this sort of problem with the vertical. Neither of the vert transformers test bad with the ohmeter. I've been through that circuit up one side and down the other 20 times and I still can't manage to trace it down. I can get sweep with an external source or by jumping a cap from filament to grid. I'm thinking of getting a new osc transformer just to eliminate it.

The primary resistance on the blocking transformer should be about 135 ohms, and, secondary, about 1 K ohms.

Check your vertical centering control. If that goes bad, you could also lose your vertical, and, that's a special 4 watt tapped pot.

It seems like that pot had burnt out (too much current going somewhere) and I subbed in some wirewound resistors. Lots of screwy stuff going on in that set. I'm in no hurry to dig back into it!

Man , this reminds me of the fun I was last having with a 1955 General Electric utravision , which I still have to finish . It seems like when there was a change in the horizional frequency , it was also causing the vertical line to change . Is your RCA doing this ?
Bill , how is your horiziontal ? does it drop off to a lower frequency ?
Mine was constantly fluxuating from almost the correct freq to was below .
It was very intermittend , almost like a loose connection , or dirty tube socket ect. ect..
I have been over this set and still it causes me the same problems , except with slightly better vertical than you have right now .
Have you checked the resistors in the vertical oscillator ?
Also being that it effects both horizontal and vertical , Could it be in the sync circuit , and the vertical and horizontal oscillator circuits are being effected by a problem in there ?

Interesting , Hang in there Bill , one of these day your going to get it .

Lightbulb

Vertical problem was caused by an open vertical oscilator transformer.
Unfortunately, following the same color codes for putting in new one proved a bad idea.
New one is normal. Red-Blue. Primary.
Green -Yellow, Secondary.

Then I found out from schematic RCA was goofy.
Green-Yellow, Primary
Red-Blue, secondary.

Had to have chassis at odd angle to replace trasformer. It slipped, and nearly fell on floor.
I grabbed it with both hands, and, saved it.
However, two tubes got knocked out with severely bent pins, fixed that, and, it broke the adjustment core in last video I F transformer.I now have to replace that!

I think this set doesn't like me.....

Reminds me of that one Bugs Bunny / Yosimite Sam episode:

"I wonder if he's stubborn enough to open all those doors?"

BOOM!!

"Yep, he's stubborn enough!"

I don't think too many people would have been stubborn enough to finish that TV. you went past my stubbornness level months ago. I admire your tenacity and there's a lesson here for the world. I suspect success is closer than you think.

But - Not giving up is not the same as working way past when you should call it a day. Then you do things like miswire things, drop chassis, etc. Know when to say when, it will still be there tomorrow, nobody is going to take it away. Mike will make sure of that.

This TV of Bill's is well on its way to becoming one of the most famous ones in American history.

I am real tempted to buy this piece of history from Bill when he gets it playing just like a new one. He's just a short drive over the long bridge from me.

Can't wait to see a picture of it working, It is no longer a question of if, but a question of when...

Local beach resident digs up an unusual item while metal detecting today.
It appears to be an old TV chassis that was buried deeply in the sand for 20 years.
Cause of death hammer blows to the anode, multiple lascerations to internal parts and what appears to be traces of napalm burns on the upper body.

Found at least one reason for popping Two resistors in horiz. output circuit were crossing each other. Looks like it happenned from all the mis handling over it's moving, etc.
Still may not have a good flyback in it. I had also been getting alot of corona, and, hv arcing. It appears the donut is failing. I now have a brand new flyback for it.
I think the reason vert. is still not running is because I have to reverse two wires on winding of vert. oscilator transformer. That should bring vertical back.
I accidentally destroyed the 4th video if transformer when chassis nearly fell on the floor. Replaced that. Set's working again, getting better reception than before.
If I can solve the popping, hv problem, vertical problem, and do re tuning, minor issue, I should have set working like new. Then, I'll be able to put it back together, and finnish final adjustments on its' own tube.
I now have put the original family table lamp on top of the set.
I'll get a picture of that.
