On the subject of viewing "Kwai" right, the last thing in the world you want to do is see that one in cropped 'full screen' if it still shows up on cable that way.
It destroys the film, and the early Bausch and Lomb Cinemascope lenses had terrible chromatic aberrations and other distortion, so the image blown up looks even worse than usual. I do agree Lean works best in 70mm. 'Arabia' and 'Zhivago' just don't look the same elsewhere. The 'printing up' to 70 just preserves more detail than 35-to-35 can. Best, C. |

Big---No doubt Lean put some stunning images on the screen (the armored train in Zhivago still scares the bejesus out of me) and that those images are best appreciated on the big screen.
