My first CRT tester was a B&K 465 that was given to me by a TV shop that no longer needed it. I was able to bring several B&W tubes back to life with it; but, I did not have near as good of luck with color tubes. I do remember seeing an adapter in an old B&K catalog that would allow the 465 to be used with the later B&K adapters. I think the adapter was an SP65. I finally bought a used B&K 480 from a TV repair friend that went out of business. I have most of the sockets for it and the rejuvenate function seems to be easier on tubes than the 465 was. I see B&K 470 and 480 testers on ebay all the time and they often sell pretty cheap. It's amazing that these testers that cost several hundred $$ and up just a few years ago often sell for less than $100 used. I guess the demand for CRT testers has really gone down since LCD and plasma came along. I also have an older RCA tester for back-up. That one simply raises the heater voltage to re-activate a tube.
I have seen several Sencore CR70's on ebay. Is this tester any better than a B&K 480? I thought about trying to find a used CR70; but, if it's not any better than the 480, I'll just keep what I have. |
