1962 Zenith advertisement

I have lots of this type of advertisement from mazazines of the early 60s.

Anyway ...here is one from June 1962 of a Zenith 6040.

Chris, am wondering if you might have a pic of the first set my folks had that I remember. It was either a late 50's or early 60's Zenith portable B&W and it had a most unusual tuner.....the channel numbers would display in a checkerboard pattern of alternating black and clear windows.......as you changed the channel the number would pop up and then disappear only to show up in another square.

Does any of this make sense? By the way, this was a VHF only set. Thanks!

You're right; that was a very unusual channel indicator design, and yes, it makes sense. I've never seen one like it. I had a Zenith 23" console in the late '60s (the set was made in '63, I got it from a trash pile in '69 minus most of the tubes) with a channel knob that projected the number of the selected channel into the center of the knob, but the design of the dial of your folks' Zenith portable is a new one on me. Then again, Zenith (the original Zenith Radio Corp. of Chicago) was always one to put fancy, and often unusual-looking, channel dials and indicator panels on its better (and more expensive) portables and consoles (witness the Spotlite channel indicator panels on their mid-'60s sets), so the checkerboard design of the channel selector on your folks' set doesn't surprise me in the least.
