Regarding Sony longevity: we bought a KV-1212 (or 1215) in 1973 or '74 and used it for 25 years, then gave it to one of my wife's younger workmates who'd just gotten married. They are still using it, quite happily. IIRC, I did nothing to it except clean the tuner sometime in the '80s. I do think the picture lost contrast over time, though.
