I too think that if you searched eBay regularly for several weeks/months it will turn up there. I found a few "not-so-collectible" items I'd been looking for that way.

Another option is to search/browse the ads in the free newspapers scanned into Google News Archive - you can narrow the search down to the time period you think that set was made in.
