Is it a Philips made set?
Not sure if that model is similar to my Sylvania set of the same vintage, but my Sylvania frequently ate a 1 ohm resistor close to the flyback. Resistor just went, no other problems. The resistor is a metal oxide type, about 1 watt, and sometimes would appear visually to be good, but would indeed be open. Just a suggestion to check,
